John's 2010 52, Part 2, Week 52 @ the end - Together (Jan 1st)

I thought I'd commented on your tin can but I've obviously been imagining things. To be honest I'd probably prefer it without the text. I like the processing and the idea that the lack of a label ensure the contents are secret

Not so keen on your "secret" light shot, think that's a stretch of the crowbar too far :)

Well, no.1 fits the theme! The processing makes it look slightly radioactive which adds to the idea of "top secret", but I think I would have used a different font - that square-edged one that looks as if it's been stencilled. Too much of a cliche, perhaps.

The second image is lovely and certainly says "secret light" or "secret place" to me. Beautiful colours and you have managed the lighting just right.

Thank you... The font was a deliberate choice, I wanted the cliche look... if I could have figured out how to get word to put a box in red around it with curved corners in the no time I had, I'd have added that ;)

Both good images John, the light is great in number 2 although i lean towards the idea of number 1 just for its originality and mystery.

Thanks Chris

It must have been a "top secret" comment Darren :D... I'll take a look, when time permits at another version without the text. Thanks for the comments, I had to use the new extending crowbar on the second one...

Sorry, my wording was careless. I didn't mean that your font was cliched - I meant that the one I suggested was.

:D... Ahh... Gotcha... you're right, but if I'd had the time to find the right font from the hundreds on this mac... then it would have been, this was closest I could find in the moments I had...

I like the can shot, although I can't think what could be so secret in food tin!

There is something appealing about the lighting on the second shot, although the upper right hand side could do with more to draw the eye.

Phil

Distant - you win the prize for the most distant subject as usual John. Up to your normal high standards. I haven't got a clue what you are talking about with your set-up details though

Secret - well lit and well processed. I don't like the wording though. I think it would still be on theme without it.

Andy

As an image I like the can. The processing is great. I think it would work much better without the words, however I understand why they are there.

Thanks guys... Here's a crop...

Phil, I think you're right about the upper right hand corner...

No time this week, the camera has only been out 3 times (the moon, the sun and some AmDram), having to dredge the archives... anyway

Urban Roofline

IMG_89711.jpg

It's a nice composition, with the repeating patterns on a diagonal stopped by the lamp post, and an interesting sky. I'm sure there is a dramatic B&W conversion in there, too.

I look forward to seeing your AmDram shots.

Hi John,

Catch up time for me :

Distant : I had a sneaky feeling that we'd see something like this from you, and I'm not disappointed. Absolutely superb as always

Secret : The second is very pretty and has beautiful lighting, but I'm finding myself drawn to the can - particularly the cropped version. It's simple, but perfect for the theme and you've handled the lighting on the shiny surface well. I just hope you made a note of what was in it before putting it back in the cupboard.

Urban : Not too sure about this one. I like the repeating pattern, but it's missing the mark a bit for me.
I'd quite like to see a crop to lose the lamppost and a contrasty B&W conversion to bring out the textures and some more detail in the sky.

Thanks all... Thanks for the comments Sarah. As for the can, not a clue, it's been like that in the cupboard for a while now ..

I actually meant to post two for urban and it's been so mad for the past few weeks...

I'll look into a crop and conversion on that one later... for now, here's the second I forgot to add.. :bang::bang:

These are not really doing anything for me John.

This first is a little dark on the buildings but I can see where you going with it.

Thanks for the comments Paul... that's ok. As for the dark buildings, that was more down to me trying to recover the sky. I think if I go back and reprocess it now, I'd do a much better job of it...

Time... what's that... several ideas, and less than no time in which to go and do something about them... work has just been utterly mad (more so than usual)... Anyway, a quick grab during a 5 minute break, and I recruited Monkeh and used my new Lambency diffuser....

Monkeh looked rather worried as Megatron "Train"ed his canon on him.
IMG_7280.jpg

it's crap.. I know it.. In the short period I've had to do this, I've not been able to deal with the wall upper right, nor the blurred marks behind monkeh... perhaps if I find some time spare anywhere, I can have another go...

I think I've not used enough DOF to get Megatron a bit more in focus... oh well...

Anyway, lit with off camera flash to the right at 1/16 power with the lambency diffuser, I was hoping to achieve a feel like it was near the window with light streaming in...

John I sympathise. It's been a real struggle for me these past few weeks too. And this most certainly isn't crap.
Good to see a completely different take on the theme. Nicely set up and well lit.

I think you've already nailed the critique points yourself though. A bit more attention to the wall in the background and wider DoF to get Megatron more in focus. As it is I'm struggling to see what it is.

I like your second shot for secret John. It is a beautiful picture. The first shot of buildings is pleasing to look at and I like the line of the rooves. The train shot is OK and original but I couldnt see what the object on the right was. It needs to be a bit more in focus I think.

You are not the only one who is struggling with these last few weeks of the 52. I am lucky because I dont have to work so I have more time.

It's a good idea and a fun pic. You've identified the things that need fixing, so you could always have another go at it sometime if you really want.

I must look out for one of those monkehs - they're really cute.

thanks for the comments, at least it raised a laugh... I'll reshoot at some point, when I can find time... which at this rate might be by 2012... not even had a chance to think about this weeks theme yet..

Monkeh has a habit of suffering for the art on here though ...

hehe, nice shot at first I thought it needed to be much closer in and didnt get the blur, now having read it I see what you were doing, worth another crack, after a cuppa of course ;)

Thanks Dade, a cuppa and some time to set things up properly in the first place ;)... I will redo it, see if Simon pulls out a reshoot card first...

Hi John, I'm sorry I am way behind with your thread.

Secret: I really like the idea and rather like the can. I think it would have been better with just "Do not open" to make it a bit more obscure. The top secret was not necessary.

Urban: I like the roof line but as someone else mentioned I would have preferred it without the lampost.

Train: Clever idea, but unfortunately lost on me. I had to look up what a megatron was! Now that I know, I think it is rather clever. Pity the megatron was so OOF. I love the expression on Monkeh's face :)

Jenny

Very comical pic for Train John. I would like to have seen just a touch more of Megatron in focus. Gotta love Monkeh.

Thank you Jenny

Cheers Paul

Another week of no time and very little inspiration... however, late on Saturday a thought struck me (it hurt too ;))...

Made to Share

IMG_7350.jpg

Lit with the 360afd mounted on the hotshoe and pointed straight up and fitted with the lambency diffuser. Didn't notice last night, that'll learn me (again) for not using calibrated monitors... the background looks rubbish... I'll have to go back and reedit...

I like that John. It looks yummy. I like the way the jam is oozing out and the angle you have taken the shot from. The colours are great too. I thought about using a cake shot but I'm glad I didnt as it wouldnt have been as good as this.

Thanks very much Sue, it's yummy too. I tried to clear up the background a bit...

What do you mean "made to share"? I reckon I could make my way through all of that myself :D
Is that one that you made yourself?

 Good composition, good lighting, luscious textures and the colours look spot on - which is something I've always struggled with in cake photos. I also really like the bit of reflection in the knife.
This might be controversial, but I think I actually prefer the softer background in the first shot. There's better definition across the top of the cake and I'm not sure that the traditional subject suits a pure white b/g.

I like this shot - much prefer the original version. My only criticism is that the splodge of jam is distracting - I think removing it would have improved the shot.

Phil

mmm yummy looking cake. Background certainly looks better in the edited version.

Thanks

Thanks Sarah, it wasn't made by me, by my OH. I wasn't allowed to wade through it all myself, so had to share... more's the pity :D...

Having looked at the two side by side on my normal PC monitor, I agree with you about which is best, defo the first one.

Thanks Phil, I see what you mean... Can't anymore.. the cake is all gone, not long after that was taken actually ;)

Another week with no proper opportunity... I managed to sneak a moment or two in with my P&S... the quality of these leaves a lot to be desired, but I'm not gonna get anything else...

A pair of options, as said, I'm not happy with the quality of either of them... The P&S really can't do ISO about minimum, and certainly can't handle anything longer than short.

I'd like to get back there one day with the SLR and Nifty...

I really hope that you do get a chance to go back with your DSLR.
That second shot with the stained glass has the potential to be absolutely phenomenal with the right light behind it and the right kit to capture it.

Even with the noise from the P&S there's something very appealing about that one.

There's something quite eerie I like about the first one - definitely needs another visit with an SLR...

Thanks Phil, I agree it's a very odd looking thing... It really needs the nifty at silly shallow DOF I reckon... not a P&S at f/2.8 which still gives silly deep DOF..

I will get back with the SLR, whether I'll be able to get inside, that's another ballgame...

I agree with Sarah that there is something very appealing about the first one - the limitations of the P&S have given it a slightly stylised quality that matches the actual figure.

I hope you get another chance sometime at the window as it could be a stunner.

Thanks Tracer
