High-end bridge cameras: Sony RX10, Panasonic FZ1000 etc

Couple of close ups from me taken this week on my hols with the rx10 iv. I agree Mike you can get some half decent close ups with it.
Taken with just the camera, no flash or achromats attached.

Two very nice close up style captures Alby, with some good detail & light.

Dusted off the RX10iv this weekend for a dog agility show -this little fella was flying around - the camera still amazes with its sharp, fast focussing - hand held at 600mm end.

Superdog by John Hallard, on Flickr

Very nice action style capture John, well caught with spot on focus.

Nice work Alby! I'm still getting tempted by a switch to M43 but not quite ready to commit as yet... anyway in the meantime here's a couple of snaps :)

I came from the Om-1 and although it was a great camera I felt taking photos was just too easy with it, I didn't get that excitement as pretty much every shot I took was sharp and without effort and skill if you get my gist.

Couple of good shots from you too Mike. ;)

I'd hate every shot to be sharp right enough

I've been looking at a 100-400 with OM1 - looks like a really good combination for birds and bugs, some amazing shots out there. Might get over it but suspect I need to try it out and see how I get on...

I use the very lovely EM1X and an old 50-200 Zuiko for bird photography. I plan to get the 100-400 MK1 for a bargain price

You won’t be disappointed Mike., l got on the m4/3 boat about 2011 with the then new e-m5 which was a game changer for me but lacked the autofocus power of the new Om system cameras. I find it all a bit overkill for what l do these days and the all in one is just more enjoyable for me now.
Make no mistake, it was a very tough choice to part with that gear.

It's funny I have been flipping with decisions about the Sony RX10IV as just one camera / lens aaaah simplicity

I think it is where you are in life, I've been taking photos since the early 1970s and the photos I can get from the rx10 is way more than I really need from thousands of pound worth of gear, I've been there and done that. I am just enjoying my photography easily these days and to be fair I'm more than happy with the results i'm getting. I can empathise with others wants and must have though. Will it all make you a better photographer.....maybe.....maybe not.

I noticed on Flikr you had a couple of images from the OM-1
Hi Mark - hope all is well with you. Yes I am still fiddling around looking for something that can convincingly outdo the RX10

I do like the Olympus system though so I'll probably sell all my Sony gear (except the RX10 obviously!) - I'm not going to rush it though as I have got it wrong so many times before...

Nice catch Alby! Got my Olympus kit today - had a quick play but the jury is still out on whether it's enough of an upgrade on the RX10iv, will need to take a few more shots to make up my mind :)
Thanks Mike, I used the Olympus system from the e-m5 when it first came out and have taken some great photos with it. I finished up using the olympus with the OM systems om-1 as I found it was just too much gear for what I do these days and having used the rx10 iv before I was naturally drawn back to it and Im now in my happy place with it. I do have a couple of Panasonic m4/3 cameras still so haven't left the 4/3 sensor system fully. I have a G10 IR camera, the G3 and the G80 which I mainly use for macro with a pergear 60mm f2.8 2x macro lens. I would pick up the rx10 everytime over the rother cameras I own though.

Nice textures and mood in that one Alby - I can see why you like it

Interesting to get your comments on the Olympus system, thanks - it may well be that I end up going the same way as you but I feel like I've been thinking about it for so long I had to at least try it and see... I'm getting some nice shots so far but I'm not sure they're wildly better than I could have got with the RX10iv so I need a bit more time to do some comparisons :)

Enjoy your time with Olympus / om systems they are good to use and very robust with some brilliant features. (y)

I 've had the e-m5, e-m1, e-m1 mk2 and the mk3 plus the om system om-1 over the years. I am pretty much done with separate body and lens cameras now apart from the 3 odd panasonic cameras stated previously. I'm all tech'ed out now and just use what little skills I have to get the best from what I have left Mark.

I am seriously considering a RX10iv as it seems to give stellar results on here so it would perhaps suit me one camera one lens?

For me the all in one system fits my needs either the rx10 iv or the Panasonic fz300. Yes there is a quality difference but I don't print large or work as a photographer, I take photos these days purely for my own pleasure.

Hi Mike, I'm not one for giving other people advice I much prefer to live & let live. If you don't mind me just offering my opinion on your choice of units with regards to the RX10iv & Olympus set up having used both.

First the Olympus can yield some excellent results in the right hands but is only very marginally better than the Sony and in my opinion not worth the hassle of changing. Secondly you are an absolute MASTER of the RX10iv so why would you want to change? As you well know the Sony has an absolute "Excellent" lens at any focal length with a full range of lenses in just one optic, it focuses extremely quickly and is far less hassle to use than any system camera.

In my humble opinion if you don't mind me saying, just not worth changing knowing your capabilities with the RX10iv.

An "Excellent" choice of camera Mark if you can get one, I'm sure you'd not be disappointed.

Hi George.

I do appreciate the advice so thanks a lot! I think it's really just an itch I had to scratch and the Olympus gear came up at a 'bite your hand off' price so I was unable to resist... I am by no means selling the RX10 though unless I am absolutely blown away by the quality in the Olympus system - at the moment I am getting some nice shots out of it but I don't think they are in a different league to what the RX10 can do. The jury is out at the moment and I don't want to rush a decision so I'm going to give it some time to get the hang of the OM-1 and 100-400 and then take it from there :)

I would like your opinion on the 100-400 if possible Mike

Hi Mark.

Hope all is well with you. I'm still formulating my thoughts really... I've had some nice close up shots with it (near macro) which are really sharp (better than I can get with the RX10), the longer range birding shots are good but I'm not totally blown away as yet - I'd be hard pressed to say I'm getting results which are way better but that may change with time. I'm going to post some shots on the Olympus thread so you can see what you think. Cheers

Hi Mike I follow a gentleman on Flickr that uses what I use camera wise the venerable and older EM1-X and the 100-400 lens. Honestly he gets unbelievable sharp shots and full of detail he lives in Scotland too I will try and link his work on here to you to get an idea of what is possible with older stuff .
Can't link it but his name is
Richard O Rourke, have a look Mike it's outstanding work
