Hey guys, not sure wether to go for the new Canon 550D or 50D, will appreciate some suggestions please!

my top budget is about £1,200 max!

Thanks!

What is important to you? The 550D has video and is newer technology. The 50D is a larger body and has a few oher refinements, such as micro adjust for your lens's.

I'm not sure I'll ever use the video... although I really like taking shots of live bands, which is what I do most come to think of it.

In basic terms I just want a quality camera that can handle noise and let in the most light... but I'm guessing thats more to do with the type of lens?

From what I have read, the new 550D is supposed to be good at low light (high ISO), the 50D isn't well received in the low light area. You will also need fast glass, so something like a f1.8 would be a good start. Someone on here uses a 28mm f1.8 for gig photography.

Thanks for that... I'm so impulsive at buying that I'd just get whatever I fancy at the time. lol.

I'd really like a higher spec but funds wont allow!
Guess I'll have to get saving... are you a professional photographer?
I see you have the 5DII... so jealous haha.

It never ceases to amaze me how often this cobbler's awls is trotted out.:lol::lol:

Basing this purely on loads of reveiws between the 40D and 50D when it came out. I actually liked my 50D and didn't find it a struggle at all. Don't tell me I've got to trawl the internet to find them now :D

I am glad I scrolled down to read your reply Nifkin :D
Here for example is a shot taken hand held indoors under normal lightbulb.Attached was a 70-200 F4L plus a 1.4 TC. A straight converstion from raw with no noiseware used. Ok I admit there is noise, but it could easily be sorted out, what I do not understand and I have said it before, instead of repeating what you read and hear about the 50D go out and try using the camera and enjoy it
For those that aint got an exif viewer here are the stats.

ISO 2000
f7.1
shutter 1/15
And repeat HAND HELD

Thanks for all the suggestions ... I am still really confused, I am slightly swaying towards the 550D, another option is to just try them both out I guess.

I'm not sure that the 7D is in my price range and I'm a bit anal in regards to buying second hand.

My main use for the camera is gig photography, I believe the 550D has the higher ISO??

you said top budget £ 1200 max.

You can get a 7D for about that, sometimes with a free 580EX2 flash which would drop the cost down to £ 1000 if you could sell that on.

Where's this deal?

Funnily enough, Argos can do some good deals, mainly packages.

I'm told that the 7D has improved Reds than the 50D, I think it's got dual processors. The video on an SLR can be used with bokeh, so the movies are improved over a standard camcorder. Personally I'd take the 7D or the 50D over the 550D, the 50D (and the 7D) is a sealed Mag body, while (I think) the 550D is part plastic, and you can feel the difference (IMHO).
It all comes down to justifying the extra £££'s:)
I'd love the 7D:love:, but can't justify the extra £££'s for video and slightly better reds.
:'(

I am so confused! ... why does there have to be so much choice out there!

I can't seem to find a 7D retailing in my budget ... I may be able to bump up the cash on pay day ... my dilemma is, which ever one I go for will depreciate in value, so if I do change my mind I'll lose out when I come to sell it, big choice! I need to be happy with it for ages :(

If you're looking for value for money and good depreciation, my money's on the 50D.

I also think the 50D will depreciate the least as it`s the oldest and has got most of it`s depreciation out of the way.

Although I think it`s about using and enjoying the camera, not what you can get if you sell it. :)

I've just upgraded from a 450D to a 50D, and it's an awesome upgrade. It feels so much better balanced than the smaller range of bodies. They're fine until you start putting big glass on them, but then they become slightly uncomfortable to hold (at least that's what I found).

Very true!

I'm totally stuck ... is the 60D due out? it may push the price down on the 50D... just a thought!

Does anyone own a 7D they can compare with the 50D?? Help appreciated!!

I would at least wait a bit longer until some 550D reviews hit the internet.

If this is your first slr, you will most likely be happy with 550D, but if you are upgrading from another model, I think I might prefer 50D, definitely 7D if you can afford. The extra properties you get are very useful such as micro adjustments.

The 60D is an odd one... Basically between them the 7D and the 550D have covered everything that people were really expecting from a 60D.

One option is basically the same as the 550D but in a bigger body, higher FPS, and probably better ISO handling, but the RRP would be perilously close to the 7D (obviously it would fall eventually, but I can't see why anyone would buy it to begin with).

To be honest, there's always going to be a new model around the corner. Just remember it doesn't make the previous model any worse!

I'm upgrading from a 400D which I've had for just over 3 years, I find it a bit too simple to use and want to be able to get more out of a camera.
But because I want to be able to have it for a long time I really am struggling with what model to get next.

ignoring the video, main difference with 550d is going to be the noise (I think).

with 50D, you get better noise (at least higher ISO range), micro focus adjustment (which should be very useful), top lcd, and the scroll wheel (or whatever is called).

Now if only there was a 60D, you wouldn't have any problem choosing

Cheers for that! Its the better ISO i'm after as I like to photograph live bands and get better at that :)

Is this budget including glass? If not then the 7D is well within, If you want glass as well then the decide what glass you want then see what you've got left

Nobody really knows what thenoise levels are going to be as it`s not out yet. It depends how much technology from the 7D has been put in (it may pay to wait for the reviews), I think there`s every liklihood that it will be at least as good as the 50D. It depends if you can live with the smaller, cheaper body. :)

I think if you can stretch, the 7D is a clear winner.

If the 7D is out of your price range, then it's the 50D. It's a step above any of the xxxD's. Good quality images and has the larger body size which makes it easier to use.

What is the cheapest price that the 7D's retail at, and what's a good retailer?

I have used Jesspos, but i'm guessing there are some dealers on the net offering cheaper packages?

Thanks

50d over 550 as its a bigger stronger body with better AF and micro adjustment ect

I like the size and feel as a 400d feels like a toy tbh

Why not consider Nikon D300 (s) while you haven't invested into good glass? D300 is clearly better camera than both Canons. I still blame myself for not buying one 2 years ago, but can't afford 2 different systems now.

Please don't give me any more choice than I already have!

I don't know why but I've always had a Canon for an SLR and a Sony for a compact... always!

I have a standard 18-55, 75-300 and a 50-1.8 and a speedlite... all Canon made... so will probs cost me a bit to completely change over??
I never really thought about a complete switch.

With a better body you clearly need better glass than these 2 zooms (otherwise it is a waste of body!). I don't want to confuse you, but if you wanted to switch this is the time. Otherwise get some quality Canon glass first.

I must admit my lens' are passed down from my dad... bless him.
I got started 3 years ago with my 400D and have never bought anything else or upgraded... hence why I've just registered with this forum.

To be honest I'm just getting to grips with lens' and how they work... all is experimental at the moment.

I appreciate your advice though!

I'm intrigued by this clearly business, coz, judging by the the many comparisons I can find of the D300s and the 7D, that is not the case at all. But then again, Daug, your statement is a bit broad; perhaps by 'clearly better' you mean the D300s is clearly a better camera to mount Nikon glass on? :p:)

The D90 is your best bet defo, just an awesome camera for the money, it's simply the best crop sensor camera out there. So don't go jumping into anything without looking into one of these babies 1st.
