the 50D isn't well received in the low light area.

you said top budget £ 1200 max.
You can get a 7D for about that, sometimes with a free 580EX2 flash which would drop the cost down to £ 1000 if you could sell that on.
If you're looking for value for money and good depreciation, my money's on the 50D.

I also think the 50D will depreciate the least as it`s the oldest and has got most of it`s depreciation out of the way.
Although I think it`s about using and enjoying the camera, not what you can get if you sell it.![]()
Very true!
I'm totally stuck ... is the 60D due out? it may push the price down on the 50D... just a thought!
Does anyone own a 7D they can compare with the 50D?? Help appreciated!!
I would at least wait a bit longer until some 550D reviews hit the internet.
If this is your first slr, you will most likely be happy with 550D, but if you are upgrading from another model, I think I might prefer 50D, definitely 7D if you can afford. The extra properties you get are very useful such as micro adjustments.
I'm upgrading from a 400D which I've had for just over 3 years, I find it a bit too simple to use and want to be able to get more out of a camera.
But because I want to be able to have it for a long time I really am struggling with what model to get next.

The 60D is an odd one... Basically between them the 7D and the 550D have covered everything that people were really expecting from a 60D.
One option is basically the same as the 550D but in a bigger body, higher FPS, and probably better ISO handling, but the RRP would be perilously close to the 7D (obviously it would fall eventually, but I can't see why anyone would buy it to begin with).
To be honest, there's always going to be a new model around the corner. Just remember it doesn't make the previous model any worse!

Why not consider Nikon D300 (s) while you haven't invested into good glass? D300 is clearly better camera than both Canons. I still blame myself for not buying one 2 years ago, but can't afford 2 different systems now.
Please don't give me any more choice than I already have!
I don't know why but I've always had a Canon for an SLR and a Sony for a compact... always!
I have a standard 18-55, 75-300 and a 50-1.8 and a speedlite... all Canon made... so will probs cost me a bit to completely change over??
I never really thought about a complete switch.
With a better body you clearly need better glass than these 2 zooms (otherwise it is a waste of body!). I don't want to confuse you, but if you wanted to switch this is the time. Otherwise get some quality Canon glass first.
