Has the jubilee made you feel more patriotic?

hang on though, if there had been no royals then there would be no castle there, so no tourists to see it...

If there had been no dinosaurs there would be no fossils in our museums, doesn't mean we still need the dinosaurs ;)

As for the banks, if the greedy people didnt want to own lots of stuff they couldnt afford then they wouldnt have lent the money they now cant get back, its not JUST the banks, its the people thinking that borrowing is the way forward

I do agree with this and of course the obvious retort is to say the banks were irresponsible to lend so much to people who clearly couldn't repay it - but that's not a great response as you are right that people should be responsible for their own actions also. The thing that annoys me is that the bankers were being rewarded for making such mistakes whereas the people weren't.

Personally, I'd rather everything was done in cash. The majority of companies I've had to deal with going under are not due to lack of profit but due to bad debts and late payments, especially in the construction industry. Although there's an awful lot of cash in the construction industry also as I'm sure you know ;)

And
Edinburgh would not be full of American and Asian tourists. I'm liking your plan :)

Right POAH, I have enough of your gingoism...if you hate the English and everything we stand for that much, stop wittering on in our wonderful language and start conversing in Scotland's tongue.

Who is talking about the English - the royal family is a mix of Greek and German lol

Ps I take it you mean jingoism

Not really as there's several mistakes in his post with replies

Please point them out then, Graham. Oh, and btw it should be "there are" not "there is several mistakes....." ;)

Americans, Asians, Greek, Germans.... the list is growing Mr Romper Stomper.

No they are not though....If you wanna be pedantic...Prince Philip is from Corfu....not Greece.

Who and when was our last monarch who was born overseas NOT in the royal household at the time of their immediate parents/succession line?

The queen is German, Phillip is Greek Charles is
Mix of both. The only English royal is Harry pmsl

How can the Queen be German when she was born here and had a British Mother & Father? Has she ever been to Germany?

Carry a gun, do you?

No, but others do. Unless you think the UK is a gun free nation?

You can't destroy a nuclear equipped country without repercussion.
Yes, you can....
Destroy-

Verb:
Put an end to the existence of (something) by damaging or attacking it.

No you can't. Read my full sentence.

POAH, so what has been keeping us safe for all these years?
The collapse of the Soviet Union and the lack of any other credible threat from any other nation?

And what about the 46 years before this?

AFAIK we've never been attacked with nuclear weapons at all

Exactly. I rest my case and no more please, my head is hurting with all this quoting nonsense.

My mum was born in India but she ain't Indian, my sister was born in Wales but she ain't welsh.

The current royal family belong to the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha dynasty which was renamed windsor in 1917, the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha dynasty is German. It was changed cause of ww1.

Then you add into the mix phillips Greek side ......

I agree!

What a really entertaining thread :) Interesting too! If the discussion had been based on skin colour, I'm sure it would have had a different twist....

Of course Queen is British

I know the history of our Royal family name.

Philip is not Greek...he is from Corfu. A bit like you saying you are not British but a Pict Scot.

But unfortunately they are not German either.......When was our last monarch born in Germany?

Erm, Corfu is a Greek island is it not, or have I missed something.

No doubt Wills is son of Charles, I'll bet the house and the car that Harry isn't though...

Just to show you some facts which you never do by the way

Today, red hair is most commonly found at the northern and western fringes of Europe; it is associated particularly with the people located in the United Kingdom and in Ireland (although Victorian era ethnographers claimed that the Udmurt people of the Volga were "the most red-headed men in the world").[10] Redheads are common among Germanic and Celtic peoples.
Redheads constitute approximately 4 percent of the European population.[11] Scotland has the highest proportion of redheads; 13 per cent of the population has red hair and approximately 40 per cent carries the recessive redhead gene.[12] Ireland has the second highest percentage; as many as 10 per cent of the Irish population has red, auburn, or strawberry blond hair.[13] It is thought that up to 46 percent of the Irish population carries the recessive redhead gene. A 1956 study of hair colour amongst British army recruits also found high levels of red hair in Wales and the English Border counties.[14]

Sorry, but most of that is just nonsense that doesn't even merit a reply

I will, however, suggest you go back and read what I actually wrote, a nuclear deterrent is of no use in defending the UK against the threat the UK now faces. It may well have played its part 40-odd years ago, but even that is debatable as there was never a situation where it was on the table as a defence against a specific threat.

POAH

1. A scottish person who by definition is a wally.

Flash in the Pan

Meaning:

Something which disappoints by failing to deliver anything of value, despite a showy beginning.

And on that note, I'm out.

Regardless of German or Greek blood, the Queen is still a decendant of James 1st who's lineage wasn't perfect either, he had Danish blood at the very least in his veins albeit diluted by Scottish a few times .

yes facts which back up what I already said :shake:
