I do agree with this and of course the obvious retort is to say the banks were irresponsible to lend so much to people who clearly couldn't repay it - but that's not a great response as you are right that people should be responsible for their own actions also. The thing that annoys me is that the bankers were being rewarded for making such mistakes whereas the people weren't.

Personally, I'd rather everything was done in cash. The majority of companies I've had to deal with going under are not due to lack of profit but due to bad debts and late payments, especially in the construction industry. Although there's an awful lot of cash in the construction industry also as I'm sure you know

I will, however, suggest you go back and read what I actually wrote, a nuclear deterrent is of no use in defending the UK against the threat the UK now faces. It may well have played its part 40-odd years ago, but even that is debatable as there was never a situation where it was on the table as a defence against a specific threat.
