Fuji x100

Thanks :)

Do most of you x100 owners use a filter just for protection? I'm reading up on filters as I've never used one before (always used a hood), is there a reasonably priced filter that won't detract from the Image quality? According to mr Rockwell a filter is essential for protection on the x100 ?!

Wow. Sounds like I need to invest in some soft white gloves for the opening ceremony. Can't wait!

Thanks :)

It's a personal thing - many swear that they will nevere use a filter.

I prefer to use a filter on my compacts, as they often taken a lot more places and not so cosseted as my dslr.

Its recommended to get a coated filter, the one i have is a Hoya UV filter, but in retrospect i wish i bought a clear filter. I used another filter with glass removed as a spacer until the filter adapter arrived.

I also use a half case to protect the bottom of the camera, a ggs screen protector, and some gaffer tape to make look a bit less valuable...

I've also attached a spudz lens cloth to the sony wirst strap i use, and the lens cap fits nicely inside when not in use..

Thanks :)

In that case, Mr Rockwell must be selling filters now too!

I don't use filters on any of my cameras. I paid a lot for that nice coated lens and want to use the coating as it was designed....to be in contact with the outside world.
You just have to be careful you don't touch the lens ( comes easy with practice and a few lens cleans!) and get a lens pen or two, for the times you do touch it.

Coatings are pretty tough nowadays. I remember my Dad cleaning his Leica lenses with either his tie or an old ( probably used) hanky and never had any damage to the glass.

Of course there are those that put a filter on any new glass. I am like that with LCD screens. As soon as its out of the box, it has a screen cover on it.

Mine's here and it's a thing of beauty. How long does this battery take to charge? The wait is killing me.

I'm so ****ed off. Everything I ever buy never turns up within a couple of days, it always takes a week or more, buy which time the excitement of the thing I've bought has gone. I post everything I sell either the next day or same day, why is it so hard for other people to do the same?

Christ knows when mine will actually turn up. I ordered it on Monday. I wanted to use it this weekend but that buggered up now.

Sorry mate. My post must be rubbing salt in the wounds. Where did you order it from?

eBay, shouldn't expect anything more. The sigma 1.4tc I ordered specifically for yeovilton airshow two weeks before never turned up til after the event also. It's the same with everything no matter where I order stuff from. I could understand if I lived in the arse end of no where, but I'm slap bang in the middle of a large city, 2 miles from a royal mail depot.

Do me a favour and gently caress the camera for me!

My one has just arrived also - battery on charge as we speak

First impression - WOW , it's gorgeous. I can see why so many people are willing to put up with its quirks. It feels excellent & very solid, love the viewfinder.

Even if I didn't get on with this camera I'd probably still keep it and put it in the display cabinet - its that pretty :)

Well I've had mine several hours now. First impressions, love the design and feel. It feels great quality though I think it's original RRP maybe isn't quite justified on first acquaintance. At £550 for a refurb model (look like new btw) it seems decent enough value. I've actually only had a chance to take two or three photos principally because I have encountered a problem that I hadn't envisaged..... It turns out that my wife loves it and won't let go!

From the brief play I have had, I really like it. The electronic viewfinder is brilliant to the point that I can't really see myself using the optical one much. The lens seems to be a cracker. It works excellently in low light and I generally like the control layout though I haven't quite got used to the aperture ring yet. I really like the jpeg output and I think I might well just stick with that rather than using raw which goes against everything I've practiced with SLR's but it just seems that sort of camera. I love the black and white shots in particular.

My only gripe so far is the AF system which does seem a bit crude after the D700 but I can live with that for such a lovely thing. To be honest having read through most of this thread I'd sort of anticipated this and am not disappointed.

So thumbs up from me but now I'm wondering if I'll actually be allowed near the thing or whether my other half is about to take possession of it. :)

Oooo errr. It is that sort of camera though. I spent some time just holding the thing while the battery was charging. Me, sad? Well yes but I bet I'm not the only one!

I think you had better get her an X10......

Anyone have any advice on metering?

My first indoor shots looked a touch over exposed in multi metering mode, I ended up shooting - a stop. Then I switched to Average metering with zero compensation & the exposure looked great? Anyone else notice this?

Very happy I bought one for travelling, didn't disappoint me. only thing I don't like is the slow AF.

Apologies as I'm sure it's already in this thread somewhere but what do people recommend for protecting the screen? I use GGS on my Nikon bodies. I see that there is a generic 3" GGS one. Anybody using one or something else I should look at?

Pretty sure it's the 3" ggs I'm using but would need to check receipts to be certain.

As you know, they're good quality goods and worth getting.

Generis 3" GGS screen protector here too. Cost is under £6 from Amazon HERE

Much appreciated gents. Will get one ordered.

I can see accessories adding up on this as I think I want a case for it too. Plus also thinking that the lens might need some sort of filter on it as it looks pretty vulnerable.

I'm not one for "protective" filters; usually use with hood / filter adapter on.

I got a Chinese "leather" case from amazon for less than £20. Tempted to get the genuine one just for the sake of it though.

Also have a couple of different small bags which are pretty good for different uses.

Must admit, I've never been a filter fan either. Always seems a shame to stick something in front of a nice lens. I am concerned about how vulnerable it is though. The hood would be the ideal solution except that I wouldn't be able to put the camera in a case, and it definitely wouldn't fit in a coat pocket.

Cheers for the tip on the cases. I'll take a look at those.

The genuine Fuji case is generally disliked, mainly as its got no access to the battery/memory card slot so needs to be removed to change them.

Some of the Ebay cases (Gariz/Horsbennu) are meant to be very good.

Cheers Chris. I'll look those up.

I've got a H+B case which is quite nice, but adds about 10-15mm of bulk to the bottom of the x100.

I'm currently using a black rapid snapr 35 and really like it.

ps got an unused official x100 case in the classifieds if anybody's interested...

Yay mine is here.
I'm quite disappointed. Not with the camera itself, but the seller claimed it mint with the box and all accessories.
The bottom of the camera is quite scratched, the internals of the box are all missing and the little thing for the battery charger is missing. I wish I saw the link to the fuji site and discount code, as it wouldn't have cost me much more than is did.

I haven't looked at the files yet, but I took some photos at work, and I like the handling of the camera and the files look good on the screen. It all seems fairly intuitive to use and certainly looks as good as I hoped. The focal length of the lens seems very natural and the shallow DOF at f/2 is fantastic.
Just got home so will fire up Lightroom and have a closer look.

Glad it arrived Tom. If you feel the camera wasn't as described and you paid via paypal, you do have some protection if you want to pursue a refund. That said if it's just a little scuffing here and there, maybe it's not worth the hassle. Either way, enjoy it. I'm loving mine.

I found the battery thingy, so not as bad as I thought. I cant be arsed with the hassle, its probably going to get a little scuffed on the bottom anyway.

Just processed some files in LR. Very pleased!. Just need to find out how to process them to look like the Jpgs, although my own style works too.
Does anyone know if you can download the Provia/velvia etc presets for LR anywhere?

That little plastic thing is a pain. I've resorted to taping it in place. Not sure about the Raw conversion. I've set mine to shoot jpeg + raw. I love the in camera jpeg for B&W so think I'm going to stick with that and if I ever need a colour version I have the raw at my disposal.

I keep mine set on jpeg, they really are that good out of the camera. I only use raw if I really have to, which, thankfully isnt that often!
Good luck with the new toy

Mines still on firmware 1.1, so downloading and updating it in a sec.
Im shooting RAW and jpg for now just to see. If I like the JPGs, I might just switch to jpg only.. Although I have the space, I might also keep the RAW's just incase

It's funny, I've spent the last couple of years shooting exclusively RAW and often advising others to do the same, yet I haven't touched a raw file from the fuji yet. It's partly because I really like the jpeg output from the fuji, particularly the standard colour and black and white but it's also because I bought the Fuji as a fun camera and don't particularly want to spend ages farting around with shots. I've still got my D700 for all that.

Can anyone recommend a decent reasonably priced third party battery for my x100? There seems to be so many on eBay

Cheers

Have a look at the Inov8 batteries. Amazon sell them. I have a couple and they seem to hold a similar charge to the originals.

Well, used my X100 this weekend. A couple of comments:-

[*]It's the fastest compact i've used. With quick start on, if i hit the shutter release as i pick up the camera, the camera is almost ready by the time i get it to my eye.
[*]Quality of the pictures is amazing. I only went to iso1600, but streets ahead of my d300 is my first impression.
[*]Flash is brilliant. DOesnt overpower the subject at all. In fact you are very hard pressed to see which poctures had a flash fire at all.
[*]The compensation dial is way too easy to adjust. Needs some sort of locking mechanism. I've ordered a thumbs up that covers the rear of the dial, hopefully that will help.
[*]After reading lots of problems with autofocus, i found that either manual focus, and using afl button to focus, or afs plus the smallest af area to be best. Just wish the afl button was bigger
[*]What is the point of the rear jog switch / command dial? It is the least used control for me, and is in the position easiest to reach with my thumb when the camera is at my eye.

I added a bit of gaffer tape for protection top and bottom, and also to 'de-bling' it a little, ggs protector for the rear lcd, and filter to protect the lens. This is now a take everywhere camera, with plenty of speed and amazing picure quality.

So this camera is a definite keeper.

Hi all

I'm considering one of these cameras but the few negative comments are putting me off. I read this post (quoted) and wondered what was meant by the problems with the autofocus?

I was torn between the x100 and x10. Do you find the fixed lens restricting and is the camera worth £645 (Jessops 0% interest)?

Thanks

Colin

In the early days of this camera, there were some problems with autofocus. These were due to two issues: people coming from a DSLR expected that speed of af and secondly, poor firmware in the camera.

The first was gradually accepted and the second was solved by fujifilm's ongoing firmware updates. It's currently at 1.3 and most people find that autofocus isn't an issue of concern any more.

It's a fixed lens so whether this is a problem for you, I don't know. It made me learn a new way of shooting: I move, the focal length stays the same. Different to zooming with your lens and teaches you new skills!

I am very pleased with mine and certainly recommend it for a person who knows what they are getting. It's not a DSLR and it's not a compact point and shoot with lots of auto functions for all sorts of scenes.

It's a beautiful piece of engineering that will satisfy you or frustrate you and maybe both ;)

The autofocus is better than any compact, but slower than a DSLR. That said, for most situations its fine. Just dont expexct to be shooting fast moving subjects.

The lens is as restrictive as you want it to be. For me, its pretty much perfect. Just wide enough for a landscape, but long enough for portraits. The whole point of me buying one was to stop the hassle of deciding what lenses to take, and in tuen usually missing a shot because I had the wrong lens on.

Now I actively look for shots that will work with the focal length I have, which in turn I believe will make me a better photographer and consider my compositions more.
Its a beautiful piece of kit, which does have its quirks, but the images it gives you far outweigh any negatives.

Its a bit like having a wife who maybe isnt the best looking in the world and has a funny voice, but makes the best roast dinner you have ever tasted and provides you with endless joy and affection.
