Fuji x100

Still, at least with the X100 I can convince my wife it only cost me 100 quid as she will think it looks very old :)

Make sure you cover your tracks on this forum then..:naughty:

Oh I gave up seriously hiding anything a long time ago. I'm useless at it and always get found out in the end :)

The prices are starting to level off now it seems, DigitalRev are selling it for £859 on Ebay and £979 with lens hood and leather case.

Currently half way through saving up for an X100, give it another month or two and I should have one in my hands!

Lens hood and a leather case £120 extra?.

Yeah, seems a bit steep. I'd probably just get the camera then get a cheap lens hood for China on ebay, there seems to be plenty of them around.

Looks a nice camera but think they are having a bit of a laugh with price of hood and case.

Aye, does look like something special. Pays testament to it's design with it's image quality, definitely feels like film - especially that third image down from Radiohead. Can't wait until technology like this is in a price range i could actually consider buying it for ;)

To be fair, the hood is a nicely machined pair of metal components, and doubles as the filter adapter ring.....and the case is the best I've seen on any camera in recent years.

If you are buying the bundle on DigitalRev's website, the ALL Inclusive (with import handling and shipping charges) is at £1,158.16.

I don't know why folks are so wowed by this camera's image quality. Of course it's good. It has a (relatively) large sensor and a decent lens. How can it not be?

What is exceptional about it is the form and function, and the fact that it runs to f/2 for that lovely shallow DoF look.

Radiohead's pictures are terrific, but that's not got much to do with the camera. It's because he's a very good photographer, the dappled shade light is great, he's used f/2, and most important of all he has a wonderful subject. He could have got exactly the same result with any number of cameras and a fast lens.

I could indeed Hoppy (and thank you for the compliments). That's the appeal of it though. It's a camera that comes very close to my D700 but is a fraction of the size and weight, and has a decent VF.

It's essentially what I'd hoped it'd be.

That delightful daughter of yours is just cheating ;) She's nearly as gorgeous as mine :D

Well, I've come down ill so I'm stuck inside.....but I have been doing some tests, comparing the G1 + 20mm 1.7 and the X100, in a sort of simulation of my favoured use....night street photography (with lots of bright lights, this is HK)

G1 + 20mm F1.7

X100

Both at ISO 3200, f2.8, 1/8 sec, handheld. Not a fair or scientific comparison, but a fair comparison of the two setups as I will be using them as soon as I am fit to go out on the streets! I'll enjoy the wider field of view for starters :)

So I got mine yesterday. Does anyone else find that it takes a bit of getting used to?
I mean, I'm getting some nice shots on it, but I'm struggling to justify the price.

IQ is alright. not the wow factor everyone seems to have raved about.
The interface is diabolical and slow, burst mode is silly and resets back to regular mode every time you use it, as does macro mode.
There are a significant lack of options in the menus and they are badly laid out. I hope they fix these issues with a firmware update SOON.

High ISO performance is excellent though, and you feel super-covert while using it.

Hoppy makes a massively important point. First of all the subject in those photo's is the real star! :) Lol totally agree on that. Secondly, I have of late been lusting over this camera and a couple of prime lenses for my 50d, as well as lusting over the 5dmk2 and even a set of studio flash lights.

However, the penny dropped and i realise that i could be doing so much more with what i already have and natural light.. those photo's are awesome because of Radioheads massive skill levels :)

Now - who is selling those skills, how much are they, and are they in stock? :)

RAWs are pretty impressive....pulled loads of detail out of this, it was pretty underexposed.

Chris, I'd be interested in your thought on how the X100 compares to the GF1.

First time out with the camera today while I was doing some shopping. The OVF is a revelation, I've never used a rangefinder style body in anger before. Being able to have both eyes open to take in the whole scene makes street shooting so much easier.

Framing takes a little adjusting to, but not a big deal. AF speed is very good in real world use, faster than my G1 + 20mm.

Yesterday... I caved in and bought one from Jacobs in Cardiff.

It wasn't my intention, we where just visiting for the day and I wondered upon a Jacobs. After seeing one in the window I wanted another play and they just happened to have one that had came in friday.

After playing again it didnt take long to part with the wonga :)

Had a play about with one of these in Jessops, found my fingers accidentally knocking a few of the buttons as it feels quite small in the hand. A guy in Jessops said their head office had 40 of them so they must be catching up with demand.

At first I must admit it did feel smaller than i expected it to be, but it soon becomes apparent that its just about the right size, not too small as to be awkward tot use but not to big to be intrusive.

Took a little while to be comfortable in the hand (I have chunky hands) but I soon adjusted.

Its a lot of money but at the same time I prefer it to my old Panny GF1, Canon G9 and Sigma DP1, the OVF is a brilliant and you can wonder round and no-one gives it a second glance unlike my 5D & lens ;)

The sensor is the same sice as a Nikon cropped sensor and yet, from what I saw of the A3 prints at Focus, it has high ISO performance rivalling a full frame sensor.

This:

Unless you've shot with it, stop pontificating about it. It's an awesome camera, and what's wrong with it isn't wrong enough to detract from that even without a firmware patch (which is incidentally being worked on as I type). The IQ is as good or better than my D700 + 24-70 f2.8 at 35mm. That's good enough for me.

.. isn't hyperbole.

What is exceptional about it is the form and function, and the fact that it runs to f/2 for that lovely shallow DoF look.

Indeed, how a camera handles is 90% of the battle IMHO, and the X100's handling won't suit everybody but if it does the combination of that and excellent image quality makes it a fantastic camera.

Radiohead's pictures are terrific, but that's not got much to do with the camera. It's a truism that the photographer makes an image. In reality it's the combination of kit and photographer. Much like motor racing, you need a good driver and the right kit to get you in with a chance, after that it's the driver's skill, often in eeking out what small advantages his or her kit has, that makes a winner

I must say, when it comes to kit I basically have what I need. The X100 however has me lusting. It's like someone has taken my thought about the potential of the Compact Camera System, added my experiences wth the GF1 and magicked up a dream camera.

Only trouble is, I'm not in a financial position to afford one without trading kit I can't afford to be without plus, the justifaction in doing so is purely subjective. My GF1 is enough for me. The X100 though would be purely be a luxury.

I suspect that 40 is for the whole country though and I don't think that's even one per store which is why it's a home delviery only item on their website. I hear from my local Jacobs that when they got one in it didn't last 30 minutes before being sold.

I bought mine from Jacobs in Cardiff, they had been waiting for stock and only got 2 units in on the Friday afternoon,I bought mine at 10.30ish Saturday, and they had a phone call whilst I was in the shop asking if they had stock as someone wanted to pop round and pick up the other one so they are still be in short supply.

I guess I was finally lucky after Amazon cancelling the one I had on back order and Calumet's system reporting stock when they had none. :'(

I'm glad I decided to get it in the end after humming and harring, it's just what I have been waiting for and hope to hang on to it for a while yet :)

A £1000 camera in a lovely presentation box deserved a hood I think, it really completes the look to my eye. In truth I just spied the X100 on the top shelf in Jessops when I was looking to buy an S95 for the other half and had to have a nosey to see how it compared in build quality, feel etc to my Leica M9 + 50mm Summicron.

The hood is a nicely machined metal component, rather than your usual vacuum-formed plastic, and the case is just lovely. Still overpriced, but there is a reason it is expensive.

I've been out and about with the camera for a few weeks now....some comments

1) It gets a lot of attention. People either asking if it's a film camera, or people who know what it is and want to try out the hybrid viewfinder, or people who just say it looks cool.

2) It's amazingly quiet.....very discrete, great for street shooting

3) It's not a point and shoot. Have taken it out for drinks on a couple of occasions, and passed it to people that have wanted to try it out. The autofocus struggles in a nightclub environment, with very low, low contrast coloured lighting. The minimum focus distance is pretty long, you can't frame a headshot without switching to Macro mode. Most people who took the camera and tried to use it ended up frustrated....while the G11 being passed around snapped away quite happily.

Still love it though, definitely one of the best street shooting cameras on the market, the best if you take value for money into account!

Any number of cameras would struggle in this environment and a rangefinder would be...challenging, so I'd probably just zone focus and although that's impossible with my MFT kit as I have Panasonic lenses I assume it's ok with the X100 as it has a distance scale?

You do have an electronic distance scale in the OCF, although I haven't used it much.

The G1 + 20mm copes better in the club scenario, mainly due to it's AF assist lamp being much brighter.

I have had mine now for 6 wks and I'll be totally honest I can't get used to it. My other cameras are canon 450d and 5d mkii
I wanted a compact to carry around all the time I read all the reviews and it sounded amazing but I'm struggling with the autofocus it's not fast enough. I shoot mainly portraits especially kids I need it to be fast. It looks amazing though and I got the leather case here in Abu Dhabi for £45 so was very pleased. At the moment I'm 50/50 whether to keep it or sell it so if anyone can convince me to keep it please do

I never use assist lamps. IMVHO they're horrible and might just get you punched in the face.

I thought I'd read that the X100 had a distance scale but looking at pictures of the lens it doesn't seem to.

There's no distance scale on the lens, manual focus is fly-by-wire, and you have a an electronic distance scale in the hybrid OVF.

Wait for the firmware upgrade that has been promised. I'm not sure it will make a dramatic difference but I think it is sure to improve things a bit - it's one of the major criticisms that I and others have of this camera, apart from the rather odd operational quirks when you get into the menus (as described in the DP Review test). Personally, I think it will take a MkII version to realise its full potential though.

I thought the autofocus seemed a bit leisurely, although I was wondering if that was because I was used to a D700. What is the manual focus like?

Ken Rockwell the other day was saying he prefers the X100 for street shooting to an M9, but then again it is Ken Rockwell saying it!
