Fuji x100

looks **** according to dpr.

So a silver is **** then? Especially considering that most of the faults levelled at the camera could be fixed via a firmware update? It isn't the Jesus camera that people thought it would be, but it's a new product carving out a new niche, so there are bound to be certain aspects of it that need to be refined.

Flawed perhaps?

Many of the shortcomings recognised by DPR may be fixed by a firmware update.

Indeed looks like they will:
Fujifilm is to update the firmware of its X100 large-sensor compact camera to address some of the criticisms raised in our review. The statement from Fujifilm Japan says: 'Fujifilm is planning to release a new version of firmware in the near future. The new firmware will include and respond to some of functionality posted by dpreview.' We will, of course, revisit our review in the light of these changes, when the update becomes available.

Sounds to me more extensive than a firmware update. Firmware fixes bugs, not fundamentals :( The key features work pretty well, as promised, but it seems like a bit of a mess beneath the surface that would drive me mad. Fairly easily fixed with a MkII version though.

Ken Rockwell has just bought one... and loves it!

Ken Rockwell, February 9:
Forget the Fuji Finepix X100. The images are soft, low-contrast, lower resolution, and boring compared to my D7000, much less the full-resolution samples I share in my new Route 66 Gallery from a LEICA M9. Who are Fuji trying to kid; children who think iPhones are cool? I love Fuji — Fuji Velvia 50! Now that's photography! When you can get this from a Fuji digital camera, wake me up.

Ken Rockwell, May 25:
It rules. Images are super-sharp, and look great even at ISO 800 and f/2. Its technical image quality matches DSLRs because it uses a DSLR sensor. The permanently attached fixed lens is spectacularly sharp, even at f/2. The X100 is an amazing camera. Its optical and EVF finders are amazing. The X100 is a winner. The X100 is in its own brilliant class.

Bloke's an idiot.

^^^ Haha! Superb. I love Ken, especially when he forgets his medication

I don't think that the guy is an idiot, he maybe just expresses his views a bit strongly and maybe a fraction of a second before he reviews them.

I do think he's entertaining, which is great as soooooo many are frightened of expressing an opinion or any passion.

I don't think he's an idiot, but he talks utter nonsense at times - mind you I seem to remember him admitting somewhere that he does it deliberately to create controversy and drive traffic to his site.

To be fair, the sample galleries did look crap, which is what he was commenting on initially.

I was very tempted by this camera when I first read about it. I might wait and see if things improve with a mk2 though. Or maybe wait for a second hand one.

It would be really nice if they decide to do interchangeable lenses, we'll see.

Going to have a play with one of these today if it's still in the window of my local camera shop, wish me luck that I don't catch the bug that many of you seem to have caught! Curious as to what it will feel like though, I thought it looked a bit big on first sight, but a proper play with it might change my mind :)

Seems to me Fuji rushed to get it out and missed the mark. In principle its a great camera, and loads of people jumped the Leica X1 ship to join the queue because they couldnt get on with the slow autofocus.

It took Leica a long time to release a firmware fix which addressed its few issues. I would imagine Fuji will release new firmware pretty soon though because the X100 has so many bugs and flaws. Lets hope it soon becomes the camera it was promised to be.

But, I dont think you will ever see interchangeable lenses on it. It was never designed that way.

Firmware update coming, according to DPReview.

Even so, it speaks volumes about how compelling the camera is - despite all its faults they still awarded it their second highest award. Again, many of it's faults can be fixed by firmware, even the weird bokeh - they could simply code a maximum shutter speed for each aperture based on how far the leaf shutter opens at a given speed.

I take no notice of review awards.

It does indeed look cool. If I didn't get the M9 I think this would have been my next purchase, even now I still kind of want it.

Stuff magazine made i the number 1 cool item 2011 :) It must be awesome!

I think that's the whole point - though not the one you intended.
It's Retro, it looks cute, immediate cachet and want-itis particularly among the GAS fraternity. For those, I fear the equivalent of a 10 stop ND has just been interposed between them and their cognitive faculties.
Lovely talking point at dinner parties. Bit of a let down if you want to use it.

Lol how do you know what point i intended? Answers on a post card please...

Just bought one of these. Finally a decent compact with a good VF.

there will be lots of jealous people on this thread - including me :) Look forward to seeing your results with it!

Finally I've found a small camera that has a decent VF and that works well in my workflow. I was gobsmacked to see one in a shop window. Literally 30 minutes play and I've a long wedding tomorrow so unlikely to get much time with it.

They look really nice, did you adjust anything on computer or are these sooc? :D

Nice shots Radiohead (great band too), it's nice to see some shots from the X100 that aren't horribly processed/composed - that was one of the reasons why I felt a bit underwhelmed by initial shots from some early adopters, as they're likely to be just massive gearsturbators...

To be honest, Guy could get a disposable camera, put it through a washing machine and still get a good image so these dont prove anything! :D

They do look good pics though!

Unless you've shot with it, stop pontificating about it. It's an awesome camera, and what's wrong with it isn't wrong enough to detract from that even without a firmware patch (which is incidentally being worked on as I type). The IQ is as good or better than my D700 + 24-70 f2.8 at 35mm. That's good enough for me.

well, that's certainly convinced me. Case closed, it's a fantastic camera.

Oof, still torn between an upgrade to the G3, or an X100....those shots have me leaning back towards the X100....the dynamic range on show there puts my G1 in the shade :(

I cracked at lunchtime, less than 900GBP for the X100 plus the Fuji leather case, and Fuji lens hood/adapter ring. Pick it up in a few hours :D

Could you pm me where from, just out of interest? :)

HK price, no sales tax. From my nearest Broadway (Sha Tin). It's charging under my desk now, want to go home!

The prices are starting to level off now it seems, DigitalRev are selling it for £859 on Ebay and £979 with lens hood and leather case.

Currently half way through saving up for an X100, give it another month or two and I should have one in my hands!

Well, just done a few test shots around the apartment, and ISO 12800 is on a par with ISO 1600 on my G1. 6400 cleans up pretty good. That was my main criteria for the upgrade, something that was going to improve my night time street shooting, as the G1 isn't really up to it.

Can't get out tonight though, boo...will be on the streets soon!

Just watched Kai's video review for Digital Rev. Grrr, after seeing the camera in the flesh I decided I could resist it's charms. Now I want it again. Questions is whether I buy a new lens for my 50d or the x100 :) Still, at least with the X100 I can convince my wife it only cost me 100 quid as she will think it looks very old :)
