Fuji x100

Just ad my first little shoot out with the X100 and so far so good.
the quality of the files ate pretty impressive and compete well with my leica M9.
AF is not that bad at all but i suppose I'm use to manual all the times.
I tested the sony rx100 for a week and didn't like it. To small and the raw files not as good that the x100.
I process them with Aperture3 and Nik silver effex.

That's just too sensible!
The link above shows the area in mm2 of all the sensor sizes.

Oops, didn't bother looking at the link. So the info is available but has to be seeked out whereas it shoudl be a stadanrd measurement given - even if if parenthesis next to the 'jargon' name, i.e APS-C (300mm), M4/3 (230mm)

Congrats and enjoy, though I admit I am a little overcome with Leica envy as I type this.

The AF thing is a strange one. I guess a lot of people come to the X100 from a DSLR and it definitely struggles in low light in that comparison but I actually think that generally it is perfectly okay. I was using mine last night outdoors at 10 o'clock and didn't really have any issues but I guess if moving targets had been involved things might have been different.

By the way, on the AF front my preference is to set the camera to manual focus mode. You can then use the AF lock button to auto focus, like using back button focussing on a DSLR. The advantage is that you can manually focus or auto focus and the auto focus uses the full range so no need to switch to and from macro mode. Downside is that because the AF range is used in it's entirety, it can slow things down a touch but I prefer this method overall.

I guess the thing to remember about the camera is that it isnt a dslr. I know its obvious, but many people seem to think it shoud be as fast and then knock it if it cant keep up with a Canon 5D mk3.
If you slow everthing down a bit and enjoy the camera, it really is superb and you dont notice that the af isnt lightning fast ( but still is pretty fast though)
I think of a dslr as a hit and run camera; if you spend a bit of time composing your image, you get the benefit of admiring glances and people respond well to someone taking their time using a nice friendly looking camera like the X100. I have struck up many conversations while out with mine. People have thought it was either a Leica ( I wish) or a film camera. People have time for film.....

Looking to pickup a compact again for Christmas as I'm camera less at the moment! Loved my X100 before but I was wondering if there is anything else out there similar now? I did wonder about the Sony RX100 but not sure if its really comparable.

Chris,

I'm still enjoying your old X100. I have a RX100 too. I use the former inside with my kids and take the Sony when I go outside. Of note, my recently purchased D7000 and my exotic collection of lenses are in the wardrobe gathering dust.....

With the price drop another X100 would be a great buy - I don't think there is anything else like it at the price.

Ps I'm not a fanboy btw!:)

Glad your still enjoying it! I'm half tempted by the XE-1 if its a bit smaller than the X-Pro 1

XE-1 is the same size as the X100 Chris.

That's good to know, I couldn't quibble with the operation and IQ of either the X100 or X-@ro 1 but I would have preferred a slightly smaller body on the XP1, will need to seek out an XE and see what I think, current offer on the XP1 with the free lebs is tempting though.

I know what you mean, but i'm of the same opinion RE the size of XE1 vs XP1.

The way i see it, if i can bide my time with the X100, the price of the XE1 will no doubt come down to around £600 and then the difference from changing to the XE1 won't be as great for me....then there's also the chance of refurb'd ones appearing on Fujifilm's store.

Very tempted to get one from Panamoz atm though....

Sounds like the low light AF isn't any better than the X100 with firmware updates, but as it's a newer model, maybe when updates appear for it, it'll be better. I kind of need them to be, as i take mostly indoor shots of my little girl and she isn't a poser....yet. :)

I ave been using it like that a bit and did work really well. What i find great is the metering and the high iso files.
On the leica you really have to work on the files and high iso are rubbish.
Also jpeg are really good .
so far so good:)

This is an awesome shot :)
Need to get an ND filter

Fred2511, that shot was taken with the Hoya NDX400 filter on a 15 second exposure.

I've just added the following to my X100 kit

  • Fuji X100 Filter and Hood Kit (I bought the Fuji one rather than a cheap copy from eBay - supporting my local camera shop)
  • Hoya ND8 49mm
  • Hoya NDX400, effectively a 9 stop ND filter
  • Mechanical Remote Release (though that shot was taken with the Self Timer)
  • Giotto Carbon Fibre Tripod, on the Christmas Deal http://www.giottos-tripods.co.uk/index.php?page=competition , although lightweight tripods have their drawbacks, the whole point of the X100 was keeping my kit light (rather than lug a heavy DSLR about)

I could have done with a bit more wideness yesterday, so immediately thoughts went to an EX-1 ox X-Pro1, but the widest prime lens is still only effective 28mm, so I think I might invest in the wide angle adapter for the X100 (again keeping weight down, but syill only effective 28mm), and wait for some wider primes in the X-mount range before reconsidering moving up the range.

I'll need to have a ponder, also seeing by good deals on micro 4/3 kit at the moment, money is tight so I'm potentially looking at a "last gen" m4/3 body like the Olympus EP3 or Panasonic G3 also as they are by very cheap right now.

Pocketable and capable, Just love the thing

Sorry Fred, staying one step ahead!!!

Thought long and hard about this, even considered an X-E1 or XPro1, but at present they only offer 28mm equivalent in wide angle as well, and I really love the X100. The WCL-X100 also has the same thread size at the regular adapter on the X100 so the filters I already have will fit as well.

I know that there is a 22mm equivalent coming in Q1 next year for the X-E1/X-Pro1 but that will cost ££££ and I'll have to upgrade the body as well!

Hopefully will be out with it later this week.

For anyone's info:- to use the WCL-X100 you have to upgrade the camera firmware to 1.3.0. It then becomes a menu option which when turned on, sets the correct grid in the EVF and tags the EXIF file appropriately. It also undertakes some distortion processing on the JPG.

I'm a lightroom user, and there are a couple of profiles about created by users for the RAW conversion.

Can't wait hear your thoughts on this, and some pictures. I can't decide if I want one or not.
Love the idea of it, unsure whether I'd put it in my pocket for the odd occasion. Mostly use the X100 as a walkabout.
Perhaps I should have another X100 permanently fitted with one. Trouble is I really only wanna carry one camera....quandary...me...
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure...

I'm also interested in the wcl-x100. Nearly bought one for £200 on eBay before my X100 had arrived but got cold feet.

I do like the 28mm focal length but want to keep my X100 kit as small as possible.

Looking forward to hearing some real world views on it.

It would appear there are a lot of us that would appreciate seeing some pics taken with this lens adapter, I know I would. Have seen some on Flickr taken with a Nikon lens adapter that also fits the X100.

I wonder if Fuji will bring out a tele version as well?

Thought you guys might like to see this (picture taken with a Canon 40D though!):-

The older one is a 1999 Fuji MX-2900, one of the first commercially available digital cameras in the UK, boasting 2.3Mp sensor, large for the time!!, was (and still is, as it still works, but the rechargable battery only lasts a few shots) capable of 640x480 and 1800x1200 in JPG or uncompressed TIFF, largest memory card supported 32Mb thats 7off 1800x1200 TIFF !!!

Carrying on the theme of this take everywhere camera here is a couple from the last 2 days

Keith..good stuff. Liking what you've done with Jet Engine. Gotta love Her Maj..

Trying my best to resist the urge to click 'buy'.

I have a healthy D7000 kit but it is not something I can carry with me every day and I'd love something that shared the same IQ in a smaller body to take with me everywhere. I'm a sucker for the looks of the thing but worry it will lose any kind of resale value if I decide it's a no go for me. I know I have missed the early adopter tax but still seems like a good chunk that could be spent on other glass. The other fear is I love it too much and the SLR and kit gets left redundant.

Hmmm...

I should add... Is the Black LE worth an extra £150?

I figure I make a saving with some of the extras included but not £150 worth, but will it hold a resale value better being limited too 10,000? I can get a normal x100 and genuine bag for £150 less and thats what im swaying towards with third party thread/hood/Uv.
