First Year of University - My 365

Easy on the slander dude :p
She does have some issues - she's homesick, she's not very social, she's insecure, her grandfather who she was close to just passed, she's developing a high blood pressure from high amounts of stress, and she just quit her job because she hates it.

Now, what I can't deal with is that these issues are being passed on to me. I'm finding myself stressed out, unhappy, frustrated. I'm all there for supporting her but I'm paying a LOT of money for this course, the last thing I need is World War 3 - Relationship style.

I was quite drunk, sorry bout that. I stand by the vague gist of what I said but the manner was dumb and insulting, and I'm not 100% that I would have posted anything as opposed to just thinking it :S

Foodpoison, you keep saying that you keep falling asleep again after the alarm goes off.

When I was about your age (which wasn't all that long ago!) I found a pretty obvious solution, - it annoyed me that I hadn't already thought of it.

Put the alarm clock at the other side of the room - that way you have to get out of bed to turn it off and since you've got up, you'll be less inclined to climb back into bed again ;)

Oh, I do that.
Except you're like "ah okay alarm has been turned off, I'll get back into bed."
zzonked.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
I've got a new plan of action. Alarm goes off, TV goes on. Allows me to concentrate and wake up slowly. I just wake up half hour early.

I was quite drunk, sorry bout that. I stand by the vague gist of what I said but the manner was dumb and insulting, and I'm not 100% that I would have posted anything as opposed to just thinking it :S

That's okay mate I thought as much :) no hard feelings :)

That solution worked for me, but only for a short while  ... eventually, I just got accustomed to the alarm sound and would doze off ignoring it.

My current solution is a set of 3 different alarm clocks (cheap £5 clocks). They're scattered around the bedroom and are timed to go off: -

1. 1 hour before the actual time I need to wake up.
2. 30 minutes before the actual time I need to wake up.
3. at the exact time I need to wake up.

The thing with this, once I initially wake up from sleep, it's hard to get back to a good deep sleep. As such, while I may still doze off .. but I am still 1/2 awake . The continued alarms keep me in that state of 1/2 asleep 1/2 awake. By the time I need to wake up, any hope of falling back to sleep will have gone down the drain.

It's worked for me for a good decade now. The only down side to this is that my Other Half hates it, as I tend to wake up around 4am ... hence 1st alarm is off by 3am

If you're still having alarm clock troubles ask Arkady if he can get a jingly alarm clock for you when he comes back fom afghanistan, you used to be able to pick them up in Kuwait and Iraq. There's no way you can sleep through the noise of those things.

Day 072 - 29/11/2009

Reflective log done, essay to go.
2500 words and 6 visual tasks down, 2000 to go.

Went to bed at 5am though, that wasn't a good idea haha.

Day 073 - 30/11/2009

Not done much today. Was up until 4, and got more house viewings at 3, plus I have to finish my essay. Everyone else is going out tonight but I don't think I'll be able to make it.

I suggest one of these(or similar), not suitable for me though, If I had to chase my alarm clock around the room I'd so p****d off I'd smash it on the first day =(

those are only really any good if it's got places to go. mine would just start running, get caught on the printer, probably fall off the table, and then get wedged on something else.

then i'd get wise and either take the wheels off, or just stand it on it's end so it spins on the spot.

You can get an alarm that sends a set of helicopter type blades off into the sky and they land somewhere in your room. The alarm only stops when you replace the blades onto the alarm so forces you out of bed.
You'll only really get up if you want to though. Bed isn't more than a few steps away in halls.

Would fall off the table, hit the cupboard, go under the bed and hit all the crap under then and then that's it. No where to go in halls!

I've seen that, looks like it might be fun if you lived in a church or something :p

Day 074 - 01/12/2009

This picture wasn't taken today but I think it represents the chaos of December.
Thousands of shoppers mobbing the local shopping centres and causing issues that require a team of fire engines to be called out :p

I finished my essay, handed it in, and am very tired.

Went to a pub/bar/club last night, and I was having a great time until I got confronted by some muppet who I asked to move out of the way of the toilet doorway so people could get in, who called me a "fat c-u-next tuesday". Properly ruined my evening and really upset me. Ended up leaving at quarter to 12. I know I shouldn't take such things to heart but like, I'm not that fat. I think I'm going to go on a diet. Plenty of fruit and veg and healthy things like soup, chicken breast and fish, and less of the carby stuff. Also cut down on the drinking. I drink vodka when I go out, and 1 shot is 50 calories, so it's not too bad.

Day 076 - 03/12/2009

Bit of an up and down day.

Ups:
- Had a fun photography studio training session today, I knew what all the lighting equipment did and how to use it, but actually taking some shots in the studio was a laugh, despite the fact it was a total waste of time. But then if you had fun doing it, was it a waste of time?
- Lush lunch in Vodka Revolution - pizza :D
- Went to see 2 houses today, held high hopes. First one was a dive. Damn. Second one was amazing. Big bedrooms (bar one, but one of the girls doesn't mind), big living room, huge kitchen and huge garden. Put a deposit down on the house, huge relief, all sorted out for next year
- Had a game delivered, had a lot of fun with it, then my brother lost it, so I got another copy sent :D
- Joined LoveFilm briefly to get the £20 cashback through QuidCo, got a French film - 13 Tzameti - delivered so that's exciting
- Seeing one of my favourite musicians tonight - Kevin Devine
- Going out as a celebration tonight to celebrate our group purchase

Downs:
- I found out my granddad - basically the fifth member of my family, we're really close - has cancer of the voice box. He's had throat cancer before, but got over it. He's 78 now, has a 10 hour operation to remove his voice box, and he won't be able to speak. He's a trooper. He'll get through it, and he'll go on fighting.

That's terrible news. You have my sympathies! Friends and family are there for times like this, don't be afraid to talk to them if you're feeling low.

Sorry to hear about your granddads' predicament; not an easy thing to live with ... but you say he's a trooper  :) Hope he does a speedy recovery.

Thanks for your condolences. He's a very lonely man, simply because he still has his wits about him. He is able to converse with people substantially younger than him, and the idea of going to a 'old peoples group' really upsets him, as he just... isn't like that. So I know that we're all going to have to be there for him in this tough time. It's going to be weird for all of us, especially him. I know he'll be okay though. He is the most stubborn man I know :p

Day 077 - 04/12/2009

I feel bad for continually missing photography and digital media lectures and seminars, because they are 2/5 of my lectures.

But the things is.

In digital media today, we're 'learning' how to use the 'magic wand' tool and layers. That is stuff I've been doing since Adobe Photoshop CS1. Not a million light years ago, but I know how to bloody do it.

We had a photography 'training' session in the studio yesterday, 'learning' how to use the studio lights correctly and effectively.
Here are some of my photos (linked from facebook - poor compression) from the studio shoot:
Click 1
Click 2
Click 3
Click 4

All lit with one light and either snoot, reflective umbrella or softbox.
Now, while they could be improved with more space, freedom, time, and lighting, I think it's safe to say I'm fairly proficient in the basic use of lighting.

Today in the photography lecture I decided to not go to, we're talking about the digital workflow - from capture to publishing/printing the final image.
Which will, guaranteed, consist of a DVD documentary from BBC, probably Genius of Photography, about a particular photographer who discusses what they do to capture the image, followed by the processing and printing and sending to publications.

Day 078 - 05/12/2009

Had a good night last night.
Just 'chilled out' with the lads, played a bit of Xbox, watched some Dara O'Brian, ate a strange amount of dry cheerios.
Today will be lounging around not doing a lot tbh. Never mind, eh!

Day 079 - 06/12/2009

My granddad went into hospital today.

My mum called to remind me to ring him, as he'd really appreciate it, "It'll be the last time you ever hear his voice," she said, and I burst in to tears.

It was a very overwhelming moment.

I spoke to him, he is very chirpy, very positive about the whole thing, and I tried to remove the warble from my voice so as to not make him upset, and ended up cutting the conversation short to burst into tears again.

He's looking forward to seeing me when I get home from uni, as am I.

Going out for dinner tonight with the parents. I think my mum could do with a hug.

When is his surgery due? Am not too sure of your schedule, but you may want to be there since you're both so close ?

Here's to praying & wishing him a speedy recovery.

And you, hold on strong ... :).

And you, hold on strong ... :).

His surgery is today. It's a 10 hour procedure, and the doctors are extremely confident for him (as you know, doctors don't give patients ANY sign of hope unless they're 99% sure) and my mum said it's best if I wasn't there as it would make him feel unsure - "Why is Sean here? Shouldn't he be at uni? What's the problem?" if you get me.

Apparently it's a 10 hour operation, 2 week recovery, and then vocal training sessions. A complex procedure that's been done many many times and then it's all over. Doctors say he'll be fine by christmas.

I spoke to him yesterday, as you know, and hearing him say, "Oh, hello!" on the phone, as he does, is something I've very much taken for granted, but he's still going to be the same granddad, and he is very relieved.

He's had throat cancer before, and beat it.

When the doctors told him he had cancer, his face sunk. My dad was there with him (it's my mum's dad, but my dad is better at dealing with things like this) and my dad turned to my granddad and said, "Well, that's well and truly f---ed your day up hasn't it ken".
At this point in time, when it was diagnosed, everyone was pretty sure he was going to die.

The NHS have been brilliant. Diagnosis to operation in less than a week. A lot of people slag the NHS off, because they have to wait for 3 hours in A&E for a broken arm, but I'll tell you what, they've been absolutely brilliant for this 78 year old man.

And thanks Wail, it's really cool that you're so supportive of someone you don't know. It is very much appreciated :)

Day 080 - 07/12/2009

Got some awesome photos coming up, just you be patient!

I'm going to be taking my little camera out this week, so expect some awesome photos.

Anyway, today my lecture was cancelled.
That means my timetable for this week is:

Monday - Free
Tuesday - Free
Wednesday - Nothing
Thursday - 1-3pm
Friday - 2-4pm

What a joke.

For one of my assignments due January 2010 we have a group presentation to complete. I was meant to be in a group with 3 other people. I look just now on the presentation tutorial schedule, and they're in a group with someone else. Which now means a frantic search for a group before everyone goes away for christmas. What a f***ing joke. And now my girlfriend's laptop has died and she's going to do my head in, when I have my own f***ing problems to deal with.

This is going to be an extremely stressful week because people can't wait to get home and uni work is the last of their priorities. I intended on getting all mine sorted. If I can't find a group I hope I can do this bloody presentation on my own. I'd make a lot better job of it than being grouped with the guys who stroll into class 40 minutes late and don't seem to give a crap about anything.

Day 081 - 08/12/2009

Had a fantastic night out last night, but got in another fight.
It was whammed - kind of like the infamous Carnage, but on a smaller scale, and instead of a t-shirt you have a wristband.

Went to several bars, and my mate Alex was nigh on paralytic. He, in his drunken state, went up to a chubby guy in the club and squeezed his man-boobs. The guy took great offence to this and waited outside the club for Alex.
Alex could barely stand up on his own, and I was trying to chill this guy out, and I was like "Mate, Alex is f***ed, just leave it. He doesn't know what he's doing, just walk away,"

Things got a bit heated and this guy started getting up in my face saying, "Go on then, f***ing hit me!" and I'm like, "I'm not going to hit you, what's your problem?!"
and then he's like, "F***ing hit me then! Go on!" and I'm just like, "Mate you're acting all the big man? If you want to hit me then hit me, whatever, just leave Alex alone mate"

This repeated a few times, "You're acting the big man, you hit me!"
So he did. He threw a few drunken punches and hit me square on the jaw. I can honestly say I've been punched harder when sparring with my brother in Karate 8 years ago.

His mates and my mates got involved, and his mates pulled this guy away, and my mates were trying to get involved and I was just saying "guys come on, just leave it" as alex was long down the street by now.
Then this guy Raj tried to talk to me, being the mediator, put his arm round me, "Sean, talk to me, what's happened?" and I'm just like "your mate lost it and hit me, that's it. he had a problem with my drunk mate, i asked him kindly to just leave it and walk away and instead he acted like a fool and threw some punches at me" then everything got heated again, and this guy chased alex down the street and Raj went and rugby tackled him off Alex.

It was all something you'd expect to see in a deleted scene of The Hangover.

People are bloody ridiculous!

This is part of the photography studio at uni.

Day 082 - 09/12/2009

Had a fantastic day today. Woke up at 12, got ready, and went to the E4 Slacker's screening for December - 'Le Donk & Scor-Zay-Zee'. Basically, once a month, E4 fund a screening for an indie film. Last month was 'Taking Woodstock'. It's for students only, and you get a free bottle of stella with each ticket. It's brilliant! And a really good way to get indie cinema seen.

So me and sophie did cinema, then Spoons for lunch, and then home. Done dee.

This is one of the shots from the studio shoot.

Day 083 - 10/12/2009

It's 2am and I'm just finishing off watching Reaper season 2. For a reason unbeknown to me.

Never mind, eh.

My Granddad pulled through the operation fine, and today we're going back to the letting agent's office and putting down the rest of our deposit and signing the contract.

All is well in my world, I think.

Glad to hear your Graddad is doing well  ... never an easy thing, surgery at such an age.

This will sound too rude, but that picture looks like someone is doing something to someone else, and in public  ... I think that picture needs a caption.

 nice one Sean!

Wail - Sean meant it with the shop behind called Oral!

Sean - Glad everything is going ok with the GF now and your grandad is doing well. Keep the smiles and great memories coming dude! I hope you are going to get the 365 put into a photobook?

Me too, I'll be visiting him at hospital when I get home.

Take a closer look ;)

:bonk:

How on Earth did I miss that! Great shot , very expressive :).

I've only just noticed this thread but can't read through it thoroughly as I'm at work, but I will do when I'm at home.

I probably live five minutes walk from your halls if they're the ones I think they are. Don't worry, I'm not interested in stalking you. Probably... ;)

There's a big block of flats, deanery, chantry, hamwic and kimber all very close to each other. Chantry is directly facing onto the street.

The site of the old Deanery school, but given it closed in the late 80s you probably wouldn't know. I live just off St Mary Street near the stadium.

:( Sean - Have you got me on your ignore list for all the pinkness? :(

Yeah, I'm going to edit down the text and make it into a book with text.

Have no idea! But yeah very close. No doubt you've heard of bum rape bridge?

:( Sean - Have you got me on your ignore list for all the pinkness? :(

Sorry mate I completely didn't see your post!

I hadn't until two minutes ago. I assume it's the footbridge going over to Basepoint as I don't feel particularly safe using it, even in the daylight?

Yep! Bum rape bridge. Sounds sinister, looks sinister.

When in the first week, we were speaking to our lecturer about it, and she said, "Oh, don't worry! No one has been raped or murdered there for 5 months!"

:gag:
