First Year of University - My 365

i didn't know there were two southamptons, I only joined for the darkroom tbh now I'm running it and having a great laugh, btw my last mach loop trip was done on expenses ;)

Pretty sure I get access to the uni darkroom anyway, but I'm gonna have a look nonetheless :p

That is a REALLY nice shot, well executed.

Is it because of the subject matter by any chance? ;)

not entirely, it's people in the act of doing something, it tells a story without text. A bottle, fire extinguisher doesn't do that without a paragraph of explanation.

I am not saying they are not relevant, its just a personal taste/opinion.

Day 031 - 19/10/2009

That's it. A month of being at uni.
This is our new freezer. The old one wouldn't shut so we got a new one.
I love it because it's much, much bigger.

Apparently, there are new fridges available. Much bigger ones.
If our fridge 'breaks' we get a newer, bigger one.
The guys who run the accommodation are pretty much all students.
They said that if they had a fridge our pitiful size between 11 students, they'd also hope their fridge 'broke' :p

I love uni. And so this is kind of metaphorical for me loving uni.
This is me hugging the freezer.
The freezer represents uni life.

(no I didn't intend for it to mean that, but today I feel like crap and don't feel like taking meaningful photos :p)

I was only joking, I understand it's a much better shot of a half filled bottle :p

wanna borrow a hammer?

I have quite the practise with kicking inanimate objects. I think I'll be fine :p

Lol, looks pretty meaningfull to me FP.;)

Loving day 28 here as well, really makes me ponder, fascinating shot.

I much prefer the freezer to the fridge. It's a much more gentle lover.

Day 032 - 20/10/2009

No picture today. There will be a few tomorrow though, I'll take them on the way to the cinema.

Had an okay lazy day today. Didn't get to bed until 3am last night, woke up at 12pm today. However tiredness has set in, and I slept from 9pm until now. I got woken up so I'm going to do some washing up, but I'm chuffed that I feel sleepy! Ah the simple things aha.

Literally done nothing of worth today. I completed Halo: ODST, but that's not really impressive.

More tomorrow!

odst any good looks like a laff?

you might get some **** for taking ** cam to the cinema, i like to screw with the people that work there by either waving my phone in the air pretending I have a massively old school video camera with a winding handle or just reading blogs during the ads :D

I won't be taking photos IN the cinema, just on the way :p

ODST is very good. Easily the best Halo game so far imo. Not very long, but a right laugh. And no sign of the flood :p
Not really worth the price tag, but firefight mode is really cool.

I borrowed it off someone down my halls so no loss for me :)

i got so bored of ODST... ended up destroying it on Legendary easy peasy.

still prefer the original Halo if i'm honest.

Day 033 - 21/10/2009

Not much to report on, and again no photographs. My foot is really annoying me because the thought of getting my camera and hobbling somewhere to take a photograph is just not worth it.

Didn't get to sleep until 5am, just couldn't sleep. My alarm went off at 7am, and I woke up at 10:30am.
I missed my lecture, and slept through my 3 and a half hour alarm. Damn.

We went to Oceana in the night, really good night. Cheap drinks, which is surprising for Oceana, normally they're completely ridiculous.
Came in, me and Jon very drunk at around 3am, got into Andie's bed as a joke, and woke up April next door, who is ill.
She got very pi**y, and this morning I apologised for waking her up. She said she was extremely f'ed off. I laughed and let her get on with it. We have people down our corridor kicking doors and playing music until 5am. Laughing in the room next door to her was hardly a cardinal sin.

Alright show off! I really liked it!
Firefight could be awesome with a bunch of mates on live!
But no doubt MW2's 'spec-ops' mode will be much better.

Will do, thanks for the heads up!

longest i survived on Firefight Easy with my brother was 3 hours and 20 minutes. Set 6 Round 3 Save 2 :P

Day 034 - 22/10/2009

Today has been okay.
I woke up on time for my lecture, went in, it was a lot more interesting than the previous lectures of this unit, but still mighty boring.
Went to Asda with a couple of my class mates and I treated myself to a rib-eye :D
Just letting it sit to get to room temperature while marinading in salt and pepper.

Some Mccain Rustic Oven chips, ketchup and Schweppes lemonade will let this meal go down a treat. I'm very tired, but tomorrow will be a fairly easy day and then on saturday it's mine and my girlfriend's 1 year anniversary. I think we're going to go out for the day somewhere, and then go out for a meal in the evening, followed by the cinema. Something simple but nice.

Edit: Sorry it's another still, boring, inanimate picture. I'm going to take my camera to uni with me tomorrow and take some photographs.

Day 035 - 23/10/2009

Not much to report on today as I totally didn't take my camera out!

I missed digital media and photography this morning. I figured that I felt like crap, didn't get to sleep until 6am, and could catch up on the material in literally milliseconds. No harm done! I emailed in sick and all is well.
Went in for Promoting the Creative Industries and as always it was a very interesting lecture.

Rather than leaving this space blank, I thought I'd show you a shot of the steak mid cook.
It was heavenly.

________________________________

Instructions for cooking student steak:
1. Remember your funds are limited.
2. While the fillet steak is tempting, are you really going to be able to tell the difference? Really?
3. Asda's own Beef Rib-Eye Steak £3.19, McCain's Rustic Oven Chips £1.10
4. Let the steak come down to room temperature. Take it out of the fridge, put it on a plate, and pour salt and pepper on both sides, rubbing it in with your fingers. Wait till it's room temperature. If it's still cold and you're really hungry, just chuck it in. You probably won't know the difference.
5. Warm up the oven for the chips, and get the pan hot. About 2/3 of the maximum heat. My hob goes to 6, so I put it on 4.
6. Pour oil into the pan and a spoonful of butter. Remember you're a student, so by butter, I actually mean flora.
7. Need to cook the chips for 22 minutes at 220 degrees, so make sure you have time for that. The hob/pan takes about 5 minutes to heat up and you're going to need 7 minutes cooking time and 3 minutes sitting time. Do the math.
8. Whack the steak in, letting it sizzle in that beautiful concoction of salt, pepper, oil and butter.
9. Be strict with timings. Or don't, it doesn't really matter. 2 ish minutes each side for rare, 5 minutes each side for well done. I did 3 1/2 each side and it was medium.
10. While I was heating the steak, I put the plate the steak was sitting on onto another hob ring to warm up.
11. Take the steak out of the pan, and put it onto the plate (obviously removing the plate from the hob).
12. Take a spoon, pour some of the oil onto the steak and allow it to sit on the hot plate for 3 minutes.
13. Serve with ketchup and chips!

________________________________

Off to the girlfriend's in an hour, to spend the night with her and then we'll be doing stuff tomorrow for our 1 year. Let's hope we're on the up, but from the way she's been acting recently I think tomorrow will be a very pleasant hiccup in an otherwise downward spiral.
Uni has changed us both a lot. For the better, I feel, but it has affected our relationship for the worse.

Day 036 - 24/10/2009

Today was mine and my girlfriend's 12 months.

More later!

For now, Park Life.

Edit: Okay, available now. Had a lovely day with the missus. Woke up around 10am, ended up falling back asleep until 12pm, had pizza for lunch, showered, got ready, watched some Top Gear, fell asleep again until about 3pm, got ready, got on the train to Ashurst New Forest to visit, once again, the "The New Forest" pub (my favourite ever pub). We had a lovely time, sat and chatted, ate food, then at 7:40 got the train back to Southampton. We then popped over to the Picturehouse Harbour Lights cinema in Ocean Village to see "The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus". We signed up for a free membership and an E4 Slackers membership and got this particular screening for free! Not sure how it works but I can't complain!
The film itself was very good but very strange.

Wandered back, edited some photos, watched around half of Gladiator with the lads, and now on here before I nip off to slumberland.

Day 037 - 25/10/2009

So, last night was my mate from home's birthday outing, which he decided to have in Southampton.
I obviously couldn't go because I was with my girlfriend.

When we got back from the cinema, she went out, and ended up at the same place as my mate's birthday outing.
Turns out, he got drunk, argued with his ex, started on a bunch of people and got chucked out. Effectively ruining his and everyone else's night.

They're staying in a hotel, but are around later for a bit, so today's agenda is:

1. Obviously go to sleep, as I'm making this post at 1:41am.
2. Get up, get dressed, ready etc.
3. Defrost chicken for dinner.
4. See the lads, grab a coffee or a pint or whatever.
5. Get some work done for Photography, Integrated Visual Media and Design and Communications and Research. Not much, just bits and bobs that should get things set in motion.
6. Finish watching Gladiator.
7. Cook some dinner.
8. Wind down with the copy of The Guardian I bought today but didn't get round to reading (btw, in the local spar all daily papers are 20p! Saved £1.70 on The Guardian today!)
9. Be in bed by 12 ready for lectures at 9!

Below you can see one of the lovely sights on my daily walk. I love Southampton.

Day 038 - 26/10/2009

Yesterday was really, really boring. I didn't do half the things I planned on doing, and my room was so hot I couldn't sleep until half 2.

Today I have Integrated Visual Media and Design, always an interesting lecture.

I was going to go shopping today, too, but I don't need to so I'm not going to. I'll live off the plentiful supplies I already have. It's far too tempting to spend money when you have it, but when you don't have it, it sucks.
When this money runs out I'll have £30 to live off a week until I get a job, and as we all know, those are thin on the ground at the moment. It's not as if £30 isn't enough, it's just enough to buy anything particularly nice. I could buy nice food, but then if I ran out of stationary, or printer ink, or whatever, I'd be screwed.
I'll take in a CV to tesco express later, they have the perfect hours for me, but they've run out completely of application forms and so it's likely I won't get the job.

Day 039 - 27/10/2009

Went out last night, feel terrible, and no sympathy.

I'm not going to drink again until next thursday when it's carnage.

Need a decent week off, it's getting silly now! Had an awesome time so far though.

I have the week off next week and so I'm going home on friday and coming back on thursday. It will be nice to sleep properly, eat properly and see my mates from back home!
Today I'm not doing much, I'll do some work ready for tomorrow but apart from that, I'll be doing nothing at all.

Here's a shot of the Guildhall. It was a grab shot composed of 2 separate images (note the black car in the bottom right that's a little bit chopped off, well the same black car is at the bottom left :p), hence the graduated blowing of the highlights in the sky :p

I wonder if anyone is still keeping up with this!
I don't mind too much, I'm really enjoying doing it.

that's not the guildhall :P that's the Civic Centre ;] Guildhall is around the corner to your right.

I'm still reading.. keep posting, its well entertaining..

Actually, it's more than just entertainment! A lot, I am learning to groom myself for when my daughter starts university .. soon! Makes me feel that much older :p

But it's also great to see how "kids" (I mean no disrespect FoodPoison) handle the pressure of "freedome" away from parent's restrictions too!

Great thead Sean. That last pic is the Civic Centre. The Guildhall is the other side :)

Just read the thtread properly and see recrudesce already spotted it.

Haha Ray what exactly are you looking to see?

Shots of club interiors?
Shots of the uni itself?

Girls laying semi naked across the student union car park of course :p

Kidding, god i dunno...i look back to my uni pics and i dont think i have stuff you'ev taken. Sure i have taken photos of food here and there, but i guess it's 99% of people, 1% of scenery that's all.

How about say....a photo of one of your workshop, or lectures? Before the teacher gets there, just when it's about the start, when all the students are finding their seats?

Or, the interior of the laundry room, with people doing laundry.

Or, photo of a few of you cooking a sunday dinner together.

Or, a 2am ice cream run to ASDA, and not photos of a tub of Ben and Jerry's AFTER you got home. A photo in the ice cream isle IN ASDA.

Things like that.

I'm glad :) No disrespect at all! I'm still a kid, really, in the great scheme of things. I'm not ready to be grown up!

I do apologise :p I've been into the guildhall itself but thought it was just the name given to the whole building.
Ignorance is bliss :p

Absolutely!
When I go home on friday I'm bringing my wonderful Samsung NV8 back up, and so I'll use that. I don't want people thinking I'm a weirdo for bringing my 40d into class and taking pictures of them with it!

boobs are good too ;)

why don't you get out and shoot some music there's gotta be some going round if I could be arsed I'd have 4-5 nights a week of gig and music pics

Day 040 - 28/10/2009

Today I set my alarm for 7am. Woke up at 7am and had a few texts from Sophie. Last night she was being terrorised by someone down her corridor again. She needs to be careful she doesn't alienate herself but there's not much I can do about it other than reassure her.

Anyway, yeah, grabbed my phone and turned off the alarm, laid back in bed to text Sophie back, and next thing I know, I'm waking up, it's quarter past ten.

In the words of the lord, "OH MY ME!"

I missed my Digital Media lecture at 9am, and the compulsory photography training started at 10am. I was up and ready in 5 minutes and ended up being about 25 minutes late to the workshop. I walked in, "I'm so sorry I'm late"
The hired lecturer turned around and said, "You've missed too much. You'll have to leave. Sorry."
Fair enough, I thought. I was glad, I didn't want to go to the poxy thing anyway!

But, now my attendance is down, and my tutor will be very angry because she thinks I don't know how to use a camera.

Oh the frustration! haha.

That's one thing I miss about home, my mum would come in and wake me up if I fell back asleep. gotta get my arse in gear!

Walking home from taking some photos yesterday, a couple of police bikes drove past and stopped at the intersection. Confused, I stood and watched, as an Audi and a BMW flashing their 'undercover' lights with "POLICE CONVOY" flicking in the back window, came literally blatting past. I grabbed my camera and took a few pictures, but it wasn't set up properly for quick shooting, all the wrong settings and manual focus. Did the best I could but that's why the shot is of them going away.
There are a lot of police cars/ambulances always whizzing around in Southampton. It's weird, because back in my humble home town if I saw a police car whizz past once a week, sirens whirling, it would be a spectacle. Here, it happens so often people don't even notice it.

4052738362_e22e4dda02_o.jpg

lol

my usual practice is if gonna be more than 10-15 mins late don't show (often ****es off lecturer) and either get someone to sign me in or email them apologising and say you were ill + offer to make it up, usually they just sign you off if they like you because its less aggro for them than doing something about it

The only reason I went in was because it was compulsory and they made a big fuss about going to it. If we weren't signed off by this technician then we wouldn't be allowed to rent equipment.

Which really isn't a massive issue, but I know my tutor is going to go mad.

if i dont hear a siren when i'm outside in southampton i worry i've slipped into some kind of alternate reality or have gone deaf.

also, can you let me know the numberplate of that audi and the beemer... need to add them to my list of undercover cars in the area.
