Congrats to Steve, Sectionate and Medwaygreen on their great results in the "humble" round. I was surprised that mine was the only "humble-bee" shot; pity the judges didn't give any points for hand-holding a macros shot and getting the bee in focus! (I've since remembered it wasn't the 85-210 in macro mode, it was my new 50mm f/1.4 with my new extension ring(s).)

I think even if we stole all Steve's cameras we wouldn't catch him this year!

Thanks Chris,

Was very impressed with your bee photo, and great to see you carrying on with lovely macro work after trying it for the first time this year.

I don't think I deserved to come as high as I did with my entry this month. Much preferred yours, Nicks and Richards photos to mine.

Was that Velvia you used Richard? Beautiful colours you captured really stand out.

Points, it has only taken me 8 months to get some (and three entries lol).

Cheers Guys, mine was a very last minute selection from a film I shot in April. I liked everyones Film entries - Chris, yours particularly as I have tried macro film and naffed it up a right ol treat

Thanks guys, I can't count the number of failed bee photos I have, as it was about the only idea I had for the theme (apart from a not-very-humble cottage)! I did like both your shots; Steve's was very amusing, although I thought a bit of a crowbar, and Sectionate's very poignant.

Thanks Steve, yes it was the fantastic Velvia 50 with my lovely Bessa.

To the four film guys that entered, Nick, Chris, Steve and myself, we are trying to keep our end up and well done to you all.

Often it it very hard with the themes to make a good shot in the time scales so having to shoot in advance is a blessing, I have entered my portrait and from then on I am empty.

Shame we can't get more film users to enter the competition.

I started out and did the first few months but then it got busy for me finishing my degree, after that over summer I was in the (still ongoing!) process of trying to set up a business and now I'm starting my Masters degree so I'm running out of free time rapidly!

Busy times indeed Rob.

Best wishes for setting up the business and your degree.

Thanks Steve

Just moved back to Rusholme so it's pretty manic for the next week or so, then it's back to the grindstone.
Would be good to meet up and have a chat if you're still knocking around in Manchester?

Rob,

That would be great. I'm in Didsbury, so only 2 or 3 miles from you. Let me know when things have calmed down a bit for you and we can meet up.

Congratulations to Steve for another excellent result this month, 6th if I remember right. A couple of the judges questioned his mono conversion, which given it was FP4 is a bit odd! I've npw calculated that even if I murder Steve and win all 3 remaining film months, he can't be caught, so it's a double congratulation, really!

(I was also pleased to get some points for my visiting NZ morris dancer, whom I met outside Kenilworth Castle. I thought I might get some criticism for taking what is obviously a colourful subject in black and white, but it was all I had with me. The kind fellow kept it up for 3 shots as the rain increased in volume, before we both legged it for the visitor centre! This was with the nice Pentax-M f/2 85mm lens, which I completely love!)

I suppose we should also congratulate Nick for winning Idiot photographer of the year! :)

To be fair the judges have been chosen based on being previous winners of the photographer of the year and would not necessarily know about different films etc. Their comments are based on this. They have been told now by a certain mod :)

A tremendous well done to Steve for his entries in the competition and showing that film can still compete at all levels of photography and to Chris on what looks like his wonderful second place in the film section.

Great work guys.

I forgot to add that Steve is in second place overall, and still in with a chance to win it, although we might have to add something to spooky's diet to slow him down! ;)

Steve's image of the dock on the hasty it's my favorite image of the whole competition. A worthy winner of the film tog of the year.

Oh and he will get the tripod Prize at the end of the year too.

Thanks for the lovely comments :)

I've thoroughly enjoyed this competition. It's really made me think a lot harder about my photography. Been great being part of the community of the competition, and I've enjoyed being there with Chris and Richard consistently representing film.

Realistically, Spooky has been uncatchable for a couple of months now. But he will be a deserved winner with some outstanding entries.

I would love to finish 2nd overall, partly for personal reasons, but also to help show that film can compete against digital.

Very excited to be winning a tripod. My daughter has left home to study Photography at University and has been eyeing up my old tripod and making hints about needing one.

Well we don't yet know if there will be a Film POTY next year, but if there is, it would be really good if there were more entrants! There seem to be more of us these days, so we should be getting more than just 2 or 3. Who knows, Steve might get asked to be a judge and then there'd be even fewer (unless Woodsy came back as a competitor again).

I've really enjoyed it, and have found the rounds very challenging, pushing me to try things I wouldn't otherwise have done. The major discouragement is that you need to get in the top 10 images from at least one judge before your image counts in the film part (at least, that's the way the scoring has worked this year). This meant that a few good film images didn't get points, whereas in a film only competition they would have done. But who knows, that might change next year (and then again, they might have been so discouraged by the few entries that there won't even be a film section).

Anyway, I'd prefer to be 8th out of 10 consistent film entries, than second out of the only 2 film entrants to have done the whole year (I think... that's without checking)! (And that's assuming I can get something good enough to get processed and submitted for this month's round...)

I will definitely be entering in at least some of the rounds next year, I am a bit embarrassed that I didn't manage a single entry this year.

I am expecting there to be a film pity next year. I would like to increase the number of entrants to both competitions. Remember that the sponsor is spending a lot of money and would like there to be many more people getting involved. I'm hoping to have the themes before Christmas.

I hope there's another film section next year I need to make up for my pathetic attempts this year, I was rubbish at entering and despite my good intentions only managed 4 entries and only one those scored points and the other 3 didn't even elicit any response.
Although I wanted to take part in all the rounds I did find it a bit of a challenge and once I'd missed a couple of rounds I found my enthusiasm waning. I struggled to even come up with acceptable ideas in the rounds with the more abstract concepts like value, humble, care and respect, that's obviously my problem not TP's but I also felt constricted by what was acceptable in terms of post production.

I am speaking to the sponsor about the themes. If the themes are putting people off then the sponsor choices are backfiring because he wants to get as many people joining as possible.

It's probably just me Darren

Speaking for myself I didn't find the themes off putting I just have neither the time nor the talent at the moment.

I found the same tbh, things like Bond and Humble left me lost as to what to shoot. I also felt putting respect as the November entry was going to generate 10 billions shots of 11/11, so I didn't enter again. I also wasn't a fan of the no-pp rounds, as a scan never looks like the negative.

I do realise that time is more of a problem for most of you, having jobs and young families and so on. But talent? Look at some of the shots we've seen here. If I can get some points, you lot can get a lot more!

I do agree that the no PP rounds were a problem, but in the end I decided to just go with it. And no worse than the "do not crop" challenge we've just had, which got a possible record crop (!) of entries.

It's really good to know there will likely be a film POTY next year, and that the sponsor is keen to increase the numbers of entries. Thanks Darren for all your good work on this! Looking for ward to the new rules and themes...

Would be great to get more entrants next year, and as Chris points out we get more people entering the challenge on here than the POTY competition. I understand that people are busy, but the list of categories for the entire year is listed in advance, giving the chance to plan images well in advance. The photos just have to be taken in the calendar year, and not in the individual month. Prizes are great too as an added bonus.

Film POTY gets a really nice prize for next year too :D

You'll have to wait to find out as I'm waiting for confirmation off the sponsor but if it is what he is looking at I want to join too :)

I'll probably try and enter again next year, hopefully the categories will click with me more than this year ;)

Categorys will be released in next few days........

You WILL prefer this coming years themes/styles and there will even be a choice. Also no PP will ALLOW dust spot removal but you will have to send in the version with and without the dust spots just to avoid issues.

Check out the details of the 2014 POTY film competition. Says first prize for 2014 is a Leica M2 !!!!!!!!!!

Now if that isn't enough incentive for everyone on TFAC to enter, then nothing is.

I'm VERY pleased with that prize. The sponsor is a BIG fan of getting it right in the camera hence the push for film too.

This is a SERIOUSLY good bit of kit...... Shame I can't enter the comp too although I'm sure you lot would beat me anyway :D

very nice prize there! I'll try and enter but tbh i find it hard to keep attention going on something for 12 months so there will be gaps.

Oh my...that is a seriously nice prize. I had intended to enter most months this year but now I definitely will make every effort to get a shot a month.

Agreed...this is an awesome prize for any film user. Hope that this great prize and the greater choice of styles and themes for the year gets a lot more film users to enter this year. And we have themes for the whole year. The photos dont need to be shot in the individual month, just in 2014. So with a little planning and forward thinking it should be possible to participate.

I'm not going to create a new discussion thread for film for 2014, will continue to use this one.

4 months are for landscape entries in POTY 2014. And having seen so many great landscapes in F&C I know there is a lot of talent for this genre here. That plus a fantastic prize of a Leica M2 will hopefully get a lot of entrants for POTY 2014
