FILM Photographer of the year

Of those 4 months two of them have alternatives so only two have to be landscapes.

Yeah, come on guys, tomorrow you can start taking your POTY 14 pics! Let's have LOTSA film entries each month this year! It's easier to get judges points, so that sinking feeling if you get "nul points" is less likely. And as Steve says, there's some great landscape togs here, in fact some great togs in general.

(Am I allowed to use "togs" in F&C???? Well heck, guess I'm old enough to do what I like:) )

H'mm digital guys can set their cameras up for sharpening, colours\balance (and whatever else digital cameras can do) before taking shots..while film users can do no PP not even for spots? So it would be lab work and who is to say they don't do PP to correct scanning problems?....Ok maybe I've read Darren's post 312 incorrectly :exit:

If you read the new rules you film users CAN remove spots post scan EVEN in a no PP month (but you must be prepared to send in the pre PPd version too). Everyone, please read the new rules there have been changes.

That's encouraging as if you saw many of the shots dev and scanned at supermarkets (where the machines are set for prints)......you wouldn't win many points without PP.

I don't think I had trouble with dust spots on any of mine this year. Most of the colour and some of the black and white were processed and scanned by Photo Express, who do a really good job, although there may have been an ASDA process and scan in the mix as well. Proper black and white were Peak and home scanned, but again no dust spots caused problems.

In fact, the only film I remember have any serious problems with this year was a 35mm black and white, processed by Trumps in Edinburgh, which had rws of white dots/bubbles. He rewashed it, but I suspect so vigorously that there was lots more damage. :(

Now please don't take this the wrong way and I'm really not trying to cause trouble but why if I cross process film is that regarded as post processing?

It was after much deliberation. It is like using a global filter for digital and only applies to post processing months - I appreciate that it is technically DURING rather than POST processing and that is why it is listed.

Is there a separate thread to post them to?

Steve.

We are using the same thread for film.

Right I've got ideas for most of these so the only question is if I've got time to shoot the ideas and if I have the ability to make them look how they are in my head. Might as well have a go.

Well the final months images have been sent for judging. We know the winner for the film prize, lets see how he does with a digital entry.....

Steve, remember with the POTY you mustn't post them (anywhere), you email them to the prescribed email address, then wait with bated breath for 14 days or so after the end of the month for the result! Then Darren creates a result thread with your image in the appropriate place given the result. It's very different from our local challenges here. But since it involves a fair bit of waiting about, frustration and eager anticipation... I figure it should really appeal to the film types!!!!

Thanks. I have found the thread in the subtle small link in Cowasakis's signature line!

I think I get it but some of the months and/or options aren't as clear as they could be.

e.g.

July
You may chose either to take an image that fits with the following theme and/or style.

Theme
Holiday.

Style
Product shot

Does it have to be a holiday themed product shot or can it be a holiday shot which is not a product or a product shot which is not holiday related?

Steve.

haha....yes.

The composition and lighting was a bit tricky, so I set it up first on the digital camera to get it right before shooting on film. The digital version just looked so much better then the black and white film version, I decided to enter the digital version instead ....... awaits cries of 'Judas' :)

Get thee behind us, traitor!

So I will be the only person to have entered all 12 film rounds! (And I still came last ;) )

Whoops, just reread the rules.... Style/Theme is either or!! Oh well some nice natural macro shots with the RB67 this morning. Should make things easier the rest of the year.

I can't figure any of it out, its so disjointed scattered across so many threads in different forum sections all titled similarly with separate conditions, its all too convoluted and confusing.

How come the rules are not in this thread ???

and what's this -

In the poster and december months you may take your scanned print or negative into the digital domain and carry out digital post production work to create a poster etc BUT any images used must be your own and taken on film.

If I wanted to be in the digital domain, I'd shoot digital, that's not what film is about.

This thread is a little confusing as it also contains last year's but this is the current competition sub forum everything you need to know is in the second thread.

You're poking the fire, if you've got something to say, get on with it

You're poking the fire, if you've got something to say, get on with it

I'd have thought it was fairly obvious by quoting you and saying "to you" but I guess not. Essentially your anti-digital diatribe being blurted out at every given opportunity and telling people what film photography is and isn't about gets rather tiresome. Why can't you just accept other people have different methods of doing things to you? If you don't like digital then don't use it, it's not rocket science and there's no need to keep going on about how much you hate it.

anti-digital, diatribe, blurted at every opportunity, tiresome....hate

I thought you had something constructive to say, not a load of questionable worded personal s***e

shoulda known better by now I suppose

H'mm if you went onto the digital forum and posted anti-digital posts...you would be called a troll and slung out, but in the film forum I think it's acceptable. Anyway it doesn't bother me as I'm never going back to chemicals for colour prints so it's digital PP for me on any shots taken in the last 8 years.(y)

Well, do it this month, process 'em and submit the first one this month, then "drip" them out over the year...

Every bit the adult reply I expected. Well done.

Right, I've said my bit. I'm out.

Oh no you don't, yeah, as usual you have said your bit

You spend half your time here posting sensible well thought out advice, and the other half throwing s*** about.

You have a different opinion, fine, I respect that, now respect mine without the fire poking and the inevitable tirade of abuse

I wanna read your opinion on photography matters, not a shovel full of troll

Just a bump to bring this back to the attention of all film guys..... the prize is a Leica M2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw that and instantly decided to take part. Got as much chance of winning it as having a meal cooked well by my mother but hey, in it to win it

Nearly turned in my Hairnet and Namebadge - then remembered I don't actually get on very well with rangefinders...

(Am I allowed to use "togs" in F&C???? Well heck, guess I'm old enough to do what I like:) )

ONLY if the photographer's a press 'tog. IMO!

Right, ladies and gentlebods... lets talk dpi. For a film entry, what would you reckon is an appropriate dpi for your submission?

OK, so the prize of an M2 has got my attention. Just went to sign up and I've been a member since 2010 apparently. Well I never...

So I've read the rules and themes and what-not and I think I understand. My usual workflow is to scan film with an Epson V500 using Epson's own software, import the TIFF file to Photoshop Elements 11, de-spot, then import to Lightroom and export to Jpeg. Presumably the resulting Jpeg is then OK for submission so long as it fits the size criteria, and doesn't have any adjustments applied in LR in the non PP months.

If I understand correctly only May and November are non PP months, otherwise we can adjust contrast, clarity etc in Lightroom provided it meets with the rules on PP.

Also, stupid question but presumably I don't have to do anything to enter other than email my entry in to the appropriate address by 31 January?

If I'm barking up the wrong tree on any of this stuff please do correct me.

In what way? Appropriate scan dpi or appropriate export dpi?

For exporting to send in. I know there's a max length in pixels, but would something like 300 dpi be appropriate for submission, or would lower be acceptable without losing too much detail?

I use 300 for everything web based and most prints, 255 for the other prints. I used 300 last year for my one or two entries and there didn't seem to be a problem with that.
