I don't often look at FB, but yesterday went in, and the top post in my timeline was one of my friends liking a post which one of his numerous "friends" had submitted. I studied the post and the photos which were with it, and immediately smelt a rat.

It originated form a guy called Ahmet Akac (Turkish by the sound of it) who was obviously "sniping" at us in Western Europe over our response to the migrant/refugee crisis.
The caption under the post read:

"These aren't Syrians; they are Europeans trying to get to North Africa during the world war... So next time you think of closing the borders you might want to check with your grandparents..."

The first thing I noticed was the design of the ship - it certainly was not built between 1939 - 1945, and the second things were the two words/names on the stern of the ship - VLORA and DURRES.
I did some more research, and it turns out that these were not Europeans headed for Africa to escape the war, but 20,000 Albanians heading for the Italian port of Bari in 1991.

The sad thing about this, is the number of people who actually take this rubbish at face value and thank it.

It is and always will be a big problem with the internet,so much misinformation out their, because everybody with an cause can use it for its own propaganda :(

Real question is, who's arsed? It's on the Internet ergo it's not important.

That's where you're wrong, more and more people are getting their news, info and opinions from the internet. The laziness of so many people in believing what's put in front of them is no different now than when newspapers were the sole means of dissemination but a lot more folk read the internets.

Some of my family did go on a ship to North Africa during the war, one of them didn't come back and is buried at El Alamein...

People that don't know that North Africa was actually a war zone throughout most of the war probably wouldn't be able to comprehend what is being written anyway.

magic roundabout by h.m government ,by fair means or foul over a period of time cause by subtle moves the closure of working mens clubs ,pubs ,and gathering places ,now everyones at home feed them political propaganda they we want them to believe via the t.v and internet .schools and social indoctrination have a massive helping hand in this .
1984 has been and gone but we are doing what was predicted , watch some news about the war in syria and the destruction of the cities there and the rise of brigand groups etc ,then go on u-tube and watch alexander kordas film of " the shape of things to come " made in 1925 it so closely resembles syria its uncanny .
the world in general is being manipulated by the media but its been going on for a hundred years or more is what i,m trying to say

Why do people get annoyed over posts on facebook where the post are generally from individuals. But brought Newspapers even when it was/is proven they have lied.

Well it's more informative, nay, fun, than the govt', murdoch, biased mainstream views of the same ilk...:meh: :indifferent:

TBH you're far more likely to get unhelpful misinformation through non-government sources than via approved channels, each with their own particular take on reality.

Nearly one millions people lap up the s*** spouted by the Britain First Facebook page every day. I'd have thought they'd have been a more worthy target for your anger.

Unfollow. Or if its really that annoying unfriend.

I know what you are saying, but because it is a relative who I get on well with, then I replied to him and showed him the evidence.
He said the same as a lot of folks on here, that so many people believe what they see on the internet - sad.

Is that really relevant Dave, one of my uncles was in the eighth army under Monty as well - it doesn't excuse absolute ignorance and a complete failure by people to check FACTS.

I am not right wing, didn't vote UKIP and generally have "leftist" views, but I am concerned about folks who spout a load of s***e about WW2 in order to make us feel guilty about what is happening in Turkey/Syria.
I do not read anything about "Britain First" because they are Islamophobic nutters.

It is relevant, to show there were hundreds of thousands of "Europeans" heading for North Africa in WW2, only they were in khaki and heading out to fight the Nazis and Italians and many didn't come back, those passing that story around were showing their ignorance of the history of the desert campaigns in North Africa (the comments were aimed at the FB idiots you were referring to, not you).

That's exactly what I meant.

I'd love to be thick as what seems to be a majority of the population in regards to current affairs or life in general, maybe it's just me that finds much more to be anxious about...
Mind you, i've came to conclusion that what the heck, nothings really going to change, mother nature will rid herself of us sometime soon, so just enjoy YOUR time, help if you can but enjoy what you have with your close ones.
Of course it should always be tempered with the use of good optics...

The misinformation posted on Facebook which is highlighted in the OP seems too "neat" to be accidental. It perfectly splices together two errors: the incorrect picture and the completely incorrect "fact" that Europeans fled to N Africa during the war when in fact they went there to fight, which is deeply insulting.

It stinks of trolling.

Sadly, social media is full of folk who can think of nothing better to do than come up with stuff like this all day, every day. As sad as it sounds, they consider it a "craft". Sometimes it's to push a political agenda, sometimes it's for fun and sometimes it's because of mental illness. The sooner people learn to spot it, the better.

Well done. That's what I'd have done. And if you can encourage him to encourage others, that's a result. Obviously some people spread this stuff because they're stupid and/or evil, and there's not really much you can do to help them, but if people like your relative are amenable to reason then it behoves us all to help them apply that reason.

Unfortunately a lot of people just click like, or forward it on as they agree with the sentiment (or believe they should) but are too lazy to check facts. Short attention span, click and move onto some cats or something

Don't get me started on the videos/pictures of CATS:rage: :)

The bits which I highlighted were exactly the words which I used in my reply to my nephew. I believe that this was deliberate, but it surprises me that the people who have "liked" it are in their thirties and have good university degrees (well, the friends of my nephew have).

I was treated to a picture of an aborted foetus this morning. An old school friend has suddenly gone super religious and has been posting a lot about various things. This one was a step too far and my friend list was reduced by one.

A few weeks ago I saw Justin Bieber naked thanks to Facebook. There is no amount of eye bleach will sort that :(

My friends list has been gradually reducing for the past year.

They probably weren't real friends anyway.

Exactly.

I have a yearly cull of my Facebook 'friends'. If we havent interacted in any meaningful way by the end of the year, or if they only ever post stuff about their cats or what they had for dinner. The drama llamas that make posts like "Im so upset right now"...looking for a "Oh no, whats up hun?" type response get culled before the official end of year cull.

I feel your pain. I don't know which is the most wearing - the ultra religious or the so-called "libertarians", both of which are ten-a-penny on social media these days.

FTFY ;)

The answer here is not to friend people who aren't actually friends or family - My FB friends are nearly all friends in real life too (or forum friends from here or wab or woodhaven etc) - admittedly that does pose a problem when your wife's aunt shares a load of b*****ks from britain first and then gets upset when you point out that they are a bunch of fascists , but it dramatically cuts down on the crap.

That's exactly why I don't participate in Facebook...

indeed - but i have family/friends in australia, america and south africa so its a cheap way to keep in touch with them (my internet connection isnt fast enough for skype)

That's exactly why I don't participate in Facebook...

Same here....and why I use email/whatsapp to keep in contact with overseas friends/family. :-)

an irony being that whatsapp is now owned by facebook and will be increasingly integrated with it - not surprising when facebook messenger performs pretty much the same function

I see no irony.
Couldn't care less who owns it.
I tap a name and send a message....job done. No adverts, no histrionics, no cats racists or fcuktards. No having to wade through other people's shyte.
When it stops doing what I require I'll find something else.

you don't see any irony in avoiding facebook by using a service that's owned by facebook and provides the same service as facebook messenger....

No, because I've never slagged off the owners of Facebook.
And it might be the same type of messenging service, but I don't have to be logged into t***book (with all the associated online vomit) to use it.

presumably you have to be logged into whasapp instead though which although currently ad free zuckerberg and co are reportedly 'exploring ways to let brands message its user base' - so you although don't have to look at adverts you can just receive spam messages from advertisers instead.

I've never had a spam message or unsolicited rubbish from the likes of Britain First via Whatsapp.

Whatsapp is a pure communications platform, for voice and text. You can't actually use it like the majority use Facebook.

It's permanently logged in through the app.
Tap the app...tap the name write the message.
I couldn't give a rat's what the owners may or may not do.
Like I said, if it changes I'll find something else, but currently keeps me free from the absolute crap that everyone seems to whine about regarding facebook.

Currently you are completely correct - but since its acquisition by facebook last year that will reportedly be changing - why do you think Zuckerberg bought it for about $22bn (the reported figure varies from 16-25 but whatever it was a s***load of cash) ? I've not asked him but i;d hazard a guess that it was for commercial reasons , and the likeliest commercial asset of Whatapp is the database of the 450 million users (plus as it develops)

Zuckerberg's statement on this was

"Once we get to being a service that has a billion, two billion, three billion people one day, there are many clear ways we can monetize,"
