Every little helps!?! Tesco Broadband? Pah! *update*

still having no joy at all bud?
Nope they aren't replying to my emails any more and the service is back to circa 1.5 Mbs less than half of what I know they are capable of.
The trouble is until fibre appears here, I think changing would be like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

I did an on line signing up to BT as they were offering fibre at a good price, it wasn't until they wanted me to add my payment details
that they "said" "ooops, not available at this time"

Their webs site is still saying 12th of august, that'll change shortly no doubt too!

yeah we get that too... Some customers state I saw that BT have started taking orders, can we order it through yourselves? Have to politley state not to believe everything they read.

Stop relying on the website and phone them, it's a UK freephone number , always found them to be very knowledgeable and helpful.

The site I have to check availability, was given to me by a BT engineer (on here)
its not their public web site but a "status up date"
And as its not available calling them will not help.

also... If openreach have completed the work and haven't updated their databases, not even BT retail can place orders with them as it will flag as an unserviceable address for the requested technology.

Thanks, I'll have to take a wander, see if there is a sticker on there, the cabinet is only half a mile away if that.
Actually that maybe the problem, its not road side and hidden by a few trees on a walk way,
Perhaps they can't find it? :D

Be careful with BT and TalkTalk fibre adverts. They splash the headline figure but hide the small print. The apparent great price in their ads is only for a severely limited product (reduced bandwidth and/or download limit. This is a marketing ploy to get the potential customer to call and discuss their requirements. If you download any amount of streaming video then these severely crippled fibre products will not be for you.

Talk Talk are on the way out, I was considering BT, once this new fangled fibre thing arrives in my little back water partof MK.
Thanks for the heads up

We get around 8mb atm & after a couple of days researching the different providers & speeds expected, I upgraded online to TalkTalk's large fibre package + phone calls 10 days ago, we've been with them for years (previously Tiscali) & received conformation email. We should get speeds of 38mb+

2 days later wifey gets a mobile text saying they are sorry we are leaving TalkTalk :wacky: So spent 20 mins getting through to someone who apologises & then says everything is now sorted. (y)

Day after checked in My Account & expected date of 20th Oct for upgrade, with new router to arrive 4 days before. (y)

Today I just thought I'd check My Account again to see if the date was the same. "please contact us.........." FFS, what now?
Decided it was quicker & easier to use their online chat.

they; "Yes Carl I can see your router is en route"
Me; "so why does it say there's a problem & to ring you?"

they; "i'll just check...........(2 mins later)........oh it's showing as cancelled"
Me; "who's cancelled? (explaining conformation email & order #)
they; "i'll pass you to orders dept"

they; "hello Carl, how can I help?" :arghh:
(explained everything again, only to be told I had to re-order) :rage:

Anyroad, cutting a long story short, I go online to re-order, only to be told I already have an order in process & have to wait 24hrs!!!!! FFS! :banghead:

Oh dear, so sorry to hear...I'm holding my breath as my switch to Talk Talk FTTC from current Smoke Signals is happening tomorrow. So far everything seems to go very well and smoothly. But I have this niggle that I am going to be cut off fully tomorrow :(

For the record this is what I'm getting tonight, following a lot of tweaking with a superb Billion Router...Not that stable but better than 2.5Mbps

tbh once/if you get your speeds stable, you should be ok. The BIGGEST problem with TT is their customer services & Indian call centre! :banghead:

And just checking the BT engineers site, it seems that its now the end of October before fibre is enabled here, around the 25th I expect it to be put back another month, just like the past two years

And here my troubles with talk talk begin. This is just ridiculous as an upgrade.

And I can't even upload the proof. This site is no longer accepting iPhone screen shot sizes? Weird.

I tried this afternoon to re-order & it still says I have an order in process! :banghead:

So via my PC now :(

Same server as yesterday.

And again ????

And with the automatic recommended server...a little better but nowhere near 35-45 :(

And using thinkbroadband....

I'll see how this settles, otherwise I may have to find a better router to tweak the line a little...

What did they quote you when you ordered fibre optic ?
Remember the use BT phone lines so you are only going to get what BT can do, although some try and win
you over with the "up to" without saying what the max the line can offer.and it will vary depending on usage by others.
Here I was told by BT that Infinity was going to be 40mbps max and it normally is close to that, upload nearer 10mbps

Did they not send you a new router? (or they did & it's a crap un?)

I was told 38-45 download, I paid extra for the service to get the upload speed up. This is less than half their estimate :(

They did send me their 'Superrouter', I will try my Billion this weekend as I can change the SNR values on that one and bump it up.....

Be interesting to hear what BT say you can get, obviously they can't check your line now but perhaps talk to a neighbour and see what the get

Their statement about;

TalkTalk Super Router

Market leading signal strength
Connect wireless with a stronger signal that travels even further throughout your home.*

  • Faster wireless speeds than BT, Sky, EE & Virgin*
Do more online with superfast wireless speeds.

  • Strong and reliable connection
Smart dual band technology reduces wireless interference and dropped connections.

  • Simple Wi-Fi setup
Connect wirelessly and securely at the press of a button.

I used to compare TalkTalk's Speed Checker against BT's (when we were having issues) & TT's always showed faster speeds than we seemed to be getting, whereas BT's & others were more on a par & presume more accurate. (cynic in me thinks they can somehow fiddle the results?)

BT's wholesale performance test; http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/

Bt suggested 35-45 as well. I did ask a neighbour who got their bt version installed. Just waiting for a response.

You probably know this already but ...

On ADSL the "router" typically did two things in one box. One was act as an ADSL modem, the other was act as a PPPoE router (and possibly also as a switch if it had multiple LAN side RJ45 ports).

On FTTC a VDSL modem is needed. This could be integrated with the router in one box like many ADSL "routers" did, or it could be separate. My FTTC connection uses an Openreach branded VDSL modem (actually made by Huwaei or something like that) and then I was supplied by the ISP with a "free" Thompson / Technicolor router (which can actually also do ADSL, but that bit isn't used) to talk PPPoE on the WAN side to log in to the ISP. If your Billion is just a router rather than a router combined with a VDSL modem it should make no difference to your connection speed. The connection speed is negotiated by the modem with the equipment in the exchange or cabinet.

I've since stopped using the Thompson and set up my own PPPoE router, for reasons that I won't bore everyone with.

The Billion has got a VDSL modem in it. The 'problem' will be my distance from the exchange and the signal to noise ratio. Few modems can actually adjust their sensitivity to such situations, and most definitely not the ISP provided modems. The TalkTalk provided one has synced at a maximum of 20 meg speed. I'll play with the more professional router to see what I can get squeezed out of this line.

I will also contact talk talk. My neighbour on BT is getting 27 download and 16 upload. So a fair bit better than us. But to be fair, they are much closer to the cabinet.

Oh joy. :rolleyes: I try to re-order again & get;

Sorry, this part of the site isn't available right now.

One of her lackies will answer pretty quickly and if you keep pushing they ignore you too ;)
But she's worth a shot, just to make you feel better.

Aye, I already have that email (and another, I think) from a year or so ago, after loads of issues went round in circles for weeks using their online support about a few dirty tactics they employ.
I contacted her personally (much to her surprise) & within a couple of days of speaking to someone she appointed to ring me.................sorted.

I actually had an umpteen page thread ongoing in their `community` help site, which I kept bringing to the top & referring to every few days, with screen shots of my 0.5 - 3mb speed.

Which speed tests are you using @Cobra

Crikey, that is poor.
And it fluctuates wildly anywhere in between too.
but 1 is quite common! and time of day has little baring on it, I actually took a couple at 3 & 4 am once, and were still under 1Mbs
at present ( I just checked) 2Mbs and 0.5Mbs

This is another email addy I found; talktalk_ceo@mailuk.custhelp.com I'm sure I had a phone # too somewhere, but can't find it atm.

Via the `community` page, we eventually got them to disable the DLM & put us on a faster profile, which worked fine for ages, but they gradually started throttling back again, hence contacting the CEO.

Presumably it can take a few days for your new package to get up to speed & settle down?
