EV sales in UK in October surged ahead ! - Despite a fall in Car Sales overall

I would think that a comparison between EV used cars and ICE used cars will be valid when there is a massive increase in the number of used EV cars.

And the costs going forward of maintaining an older EV are more known, as a battery replacement would result in most cars being uneconomical to repair - in a similar way that a clutch replacement in a 2.5K focus might be deemed uneconomical as it almost certainly will involve a dual mass flywheel, and given the then age of the vehicle other stuff is also likely discs/suspension/etc.

At the moment there is a distinct lack of confidence in the second hand EV marketplace, hence the significant depreciation being experienced by EV vehicles. 60% in first 3 years being typical (AA figures) - when something like a Toyota Yaris (not disimilar in size to the smaller EVs) has something like 30% depreciation in the first 3 years.

Possibly also air resistance.

Tesla model 3 have a really nasty plastic hub cap over their alloys. Many drivers remove them but they are supposed to give a small %age extra range.

I think this is the correct answer, although styling intended to set them apart from ICE cars is part of it too, and the big rims on skinny tyres will reduce weight-induced wallowing, making the car less unappealing to someone used to a lighter vehicle. But the wheel designs are extraordinarily ugly.

Yes that will be true, but we are no where near that point at the moment.

Well it can be done now, if someone looking at spending 15-25k on a family car is looking to get a new or used one.

My car, does around 4K miles per annum, 240hp, 2wd, 1200kg, options for an ev replacement limited, ie, new MG Cyberstar, 400hpish leccy motor, 4wd, 2000kg and around £60k, 10 minute test drive convinced me that it would do, yes it’s quick and has more power but it needs it for the extra weight, handling not quite an oil tanker at sea but nah, I’ll stick to my old Honda bought and paid for on the day I brought it home. PCP! Isn’t that some kind of drug.

Ah, the S2000; very underrated car. I'm sure I remember seeing a video where one was supercharged and always wished they did that from factory. I've always felt that Honda were late to petrol forced induction and despite it most likely giving them better reliability, it lost them to the Bavarian hordes and their big torque! lol

It's probably a lot easier for me to find an EV replacement for my car because it's 1800kg, AWD and instant torque - so a lot of similarities. I would miss the exhaust note though. I hardly ever photograph my car, but I was recovering my father-in-law's electric bike (ah the irony! haha) after an accident here and I liked how the light was hitting it.

@gman it helps a lot that your car is clean! Mine is very rarely as gleaming as that

Thanks, although I'll have to be honest and admit that it's a rarity. I used to be quite good at keeping it clean, but now it feels like a losing battle due to lack of time and, well, willpower haha.

I always used to be the same. Almost weekly. But you get a nice car, keep it looking smart etc and before long someone opens their door on it, someone scuffs it, marks the bumper, hits the mirror, scratches it...... You just lose interest unfortunately. And another reason why I don't see the point in owning £10,000+ cars. Let alone something worth up into the £30k's and beyond.

I do keep the Escort nice though, but that is very very different!
