BTW, did anyone else watch the episode? Only moments later on in the episode the hamster was called short repeatedly and they showed an advertising image with his head half cut off as he was so short to get in it and Jezza was called a fat old man repeatedly. I for one thought it was a very entertaining episode, even liked the dig at TG when passing the cenotaph

I think it demonstrates how subjective humour is. I think the OP's question is as stupid as some of the humour in the clip and some of the responses in the thread. Is OP really asking if people generally have lost their sense of humour, because some people do not find humour in something that he does? Must dash; a fireman got my pussy really wet after letting his hose off while trying to retrieve her from a tree.

The OP hadn't seen the show, he was complaining that people complained about something not being funny.
The really odd thing, no one who's seen it thought it was funny. Not a single person.

So the complaint seems to be that everyone's complaining about a crap joke. Which must be due to everyone losing their sense of humour :eek:

The thread obviously gained traction due to all the old blokes obsession with political correctness.

I like GT and the schoolboy humour, it's tried and tested and in my opinion the last series of TG has been a failure. What Hammond said wasn't funny, maybe he thought he was being cool like the trendy youngsters today. It was a stupid thing to say, both Clarkson and May looked visibly shocked - it was just cringeworthy (just my opinion). Clarkson used the 'N' word (allegedly) and is no stranger to controversy. They definitely like sailing close to the wind.

I still don't see what everyone is getting uptight about. Was it a homophobic comment? No. A very high percentage of people eat ice cream, that number will include homophobes. Like I said earlier, the joke is on the people getting all uptight over nothing.

Does that make Hammond a homophobic bigot? no, not on a single instance but if he were to constantly say homophobic things then you would need to re-evaluate.

What was the relevance of homophobes who eat ice cream?

The joke was intended to be an insult to Clarkson, inferring that being gay is something to be embarrassed or ashamed of. That is why it was homophobic.
 
Comedy has come along way since since the 'silent' Harold Lloyd hanging on by his fingertips from a New York skyscraper and the slapstick pie-in-the-face by the Keystone Cops and Chaplain. The racist 'club' stand-up comedians of the 70s / 80s, one who used to stand up and put a black stocking over his head and say 'I feel you all hate me already' and speak with a mock afro-Caribbean voice have long thankfully moved on. Then along came they alternative comedians, Ben Elton, Alexis Sale and Julian Clary - also controversial at the time but nothing has really changed !

No the joke was about eating ice cream. It's only your thought pattern that infers there is something wrong with being gay. As there will be homophobes who eat ice cream how can it be homophobic. Therefore the comment can't be taken seriously, I daresay Hammond eats ice cream, hence it's a joke, whether you or others find it funny or not.

No, he was mocking someone for eating ice cream. As I've already pointed out eating ice cream isn't really based on anyone's sexuality, hence he was joking. If you are taking offence to it then the joke is on you for taking it so seriously. Do you really believe homophobes will have taken the comment seriously? People will be offended by that comment and for that reason it is wrong. We come from a culture where being 'gay' was wrong and being a homosexual was a criminal offence. Hatred and persecution was the norm.

She is also vegetarian, and bordering on vegan ism.
So I'd be very surprised if she ate / liked ice cream anyway :D

So if he'd said he doesn't eat ice cream because he's not a child, does that normalise the opinion that being a child is wrong. No it doesn't. Being a sheep and being indoctrinated on how to think by the PC brigade instead of thinking for yourself is wrong though. Just because he chose to use gays as a reference, doesn't make it wrong, it just ridicules all the sheep who think it's wrong to do so.

I thought we were talking about humour in this thread, or at least trying. It seems it's you that has `deflected` somewhat. (Millionaires, baby boomers & now feeling as though the thread is somehow personal)

We all have preferences/differences in ideas of what is funny to us & we can find humour in all sorts of things, surely. What is funny to you, might not be funny to RH, but that's fine.

My opinion is, no one should use derogatory words about anyone & we should all get along swimmingly.
I also believe people need to stop being `outraged` far too easily & allow others to have different views & opinions, especially on what is funny to them.
