ain't gonna happen. Bill is from Yorkshire.
but of course you would expect me to do my usual "long, long, long" response ....... but there could be typo's and I'll now probably get banned for "good"
On a more serious note, although I saw the Utube vid as “as joke” and funny, with maybe a serious message, I was surprised to be “banned” for posting this and starting the thread, I thought that the OOF area of the forum was the place to post and discuss.
The economic cost of “fat people” is now of concern, just look at the cost to the health service alone. This is a subject that needs to be discussed in every way possible, from all angles, seriously, as a joke or as in the Utube video which maybe derogatory.
I could mention the “economic cost” but will add to my comments about the airline industry and the increasing problems they face because of obesity.
Each year there are more and more “fat people” in Western society. Airlines need to run profitably and safely. Weight is very important in this context and financially if weight increases and is not paid for, they have a problem; average passenger weight has increased. From a safety standpoint they can only push “free” carried weight so far.
Over the past few years Airlines have significantly tighten up on the weight of passenger luggage in order to counter the increased weight (of passengers). They can only go so far and I am advocating that it is now time that “weight” on airlines be paid for in a more appropriate way.
A “fat passenger tax”,
(and these words are the words generally used – not mine), has, and is being discussed by the International carriers, but it is as appropriate to small single engine props ……. The subject is still on the table and IMHO, one day such a “fat tax” will be introduced.
If an airline carries more weight for the same total passenger revenue, something has to give. Airlines have introduced more innovative ways to gain revenue through “premium” seat upgrades, (World Traveller plus is an easy one to understand … the seating section is getting bigger), and there are probably now 7 different seating price/choice options on international flights. Also there is a move towards more premium seating and less economy seats and even talk of making economy seats more compact …….. if that happens every traveller on a budget will suffer.
Airlines cannot keep carrying increased weight without gaining more revenue or reducing passenger numbers, the economics just do not work.
The economic cost of “fat people” is now staggering, (3% of GDP is being mentioned!), ……. just read the facts …. there is no point in me going through these, but the extra transportation costs, not only in the air, but also on land because of increasing obesity is significant especially in a world were we are trying to save economic resources. The UK national health service spend more on obesity related care than we do on child poverty, wars, the army, refugees etc., etc.
It is not a question of prejudice as some feel, I see the denial in not recognising this problem as similar to that of smokers 30 years ago. To me it is the same as smoking was/is not only from a health perspective but also with regard to the other social consequences, albeit slightly different ones. Many do not even wish to discuss the matter.
The opinions are; if you want to live a shorter life, be fat, if you want to suffer health problems, be fat, if you want your kids to have the same problems, be fat, if the UK wants to “spend” up to 3% on the economic impact of this allow it to continue……….. it is your choice, we live in a democracy ……. but do not expect society to agree with you and stand by and do nothing, as I said we live in a democracy
Things that have been said in this thread avoid the problem, it is a serious problem …… and it should be raised in every possible way…. banning will never be the answer……. arguments and discussion should be allowed to develop, either way.
Many will say that I am prejudice, I am, as from my perspective, I do not like to sit next to fat people on an aircraft, just as I do not like to sit next to someone who reeks of cigarette smoke …. we are all prejudice in some way, I am quite happy to support charities and good causes but I do object to subsidising fat travellers and I object to paying the same price for my seat ….. whether it be in first class or economy… if my opinion helps to further the debate either way, even in this small area, then I am happy, not sorry, not apologetic……..
This is a photographic forum, I made this posting in OOF, I pointed out that it had swearing content, I was banned from the debate; if that is progress, and it appears to be for many in this thread, then I just do not know what to say……… joke or not.
As most of the people who have commented in this thread disagree with me all I can say is that we share different opinions, as I have said I am not sorry or apologetic, that is not what it is about.
