Darkslinger's 52 Week Challenge - 2022

Week #14 - unusual - building on my flora image, I thought that, rather than trying to find an unusual object, I'd render an image of a tourist icon in an unusual way.

Gastown Steam Clock (learn more here) - Pep Ventosa "in the round" style - 27 images combined in PS

Mar 30-22-36.jpg

That works for me too. I like it a lot. I must play around with this method!

Thanks Donal. It's fun to do as long as your computer has the processing power. Mine is a gaming laptop and doesn't struggle too hard but I know that I couldn't have done this on my old Microsoft Surface.

That’s really nice Bill. The processing gives it a kind of Victorian feel even with the modern cars in the shot.
Interesting to read about the clock too.

I like what you have done with the pics, gave me the impression of a Constable painting

Really like the image Bill, so instead of rotating the clock I assume you rotated yourself around the clock.

It's sort of vaguely Steam-Punk

I'm really enjoying these images in this style. I can't remember the artists name now - but I did go and read the link you posted. I love the colours too.

Really like your pic Bill. Lots of detail but somehow not detracting from the main image...very clever

Thanks John, I had to research what you meant by a Constable painting, I appreciate the sentiment.

Thanks Duncan, yes you are right. The technique involves walking around the subject and taking pictures from all angles. That's the easy part.
The more time-consuming part is bringing them all into Photoshop and, at least to some degree, aligning them up, setting the opacity of each layer and moving them up and down the stack until you have something you're happy with.

All good fun :D

Nice one Bill. Certainly unusual, but works well.
Thank you Simon.

Nice one.
Thanks Alan!

Thank you Bebop, Pep Ventosa is his name.

Thanks Simon.

I love the effect.
How was it achieved? Is @Chevin correct?
Thanks Tim, basically what I did was:
1. find your subject and take a number of pictures from different angles as you walk around it
2. try to keep the subject relatively aligned in camera if you can
3. don't worry about anything or anyone entering the shot
4. you can adjust the exposure as you go to account for changing light, this is an impressionistic technique so each image can be exposed differently
5. do basic edits in Lightroom
6. move the edited images to Photoshop as layers
7, go through each image and try to align it with the image you chose as your base, this will mean turning the visibility off on all the layers except the base layer and the one you're aligning
8. adjust the opacity of each of the layers once they are all aligned
9. turn on the visibility of all layers and play around with the order of the images until you get something you like

Presto! Easy-peasy...

To be honest there is a bit of a learning curve but it's all about trial and error and just playing around.
That's a different take on the theme. I love it..
Thank you Helen!

Week #15 - Snapper's Choice
I decided to go all macro this time with a walk with the dogs through the Campbell River Regional Park.

The only mushrooms that I found:
Apr 16-22.jpg

There were small cut-leaf bleeding hearts that have naturalized many parts of the forest:
Apr 16-22-6.jpg

Not sure what this tree is but the flowers were amazing when backlit by the sun through the trees:
Apr 16-22-4.jpg

There are a few what I think are Cherries that are scattered throughout the park:

The ferns are all sending up fiddleheads:

And lastly, I think this Skunk Cabbage makes a good b&w subject (the yellow was too intense):

All cracking shots Bill. I like the mushroom - so delicate, and I also have a soft spot for the fern shot - when they're like this they look almost animate.

A fine set of pix!

Thanks Simon, mushrooms and the ferns early or really late in the season are my "go to" nature shots.

A fine set of pix!
Thanks Dave.

Great set of images, any of them are bang on.
Thank you Dave.

Interesting set. Mushroom is the one that stands out. Well spotted.
Thanks Peter, I was happy to find this little guy at this time of year. Most of the ones I like to shoot come out in the fall.

Nice selection, I may have gone with #3, purely because of the complimentary colours (there is less going on in the image, but colour! :) ).
Thanks Tim, I was happy with how that one turned out, kind of framed by the light behind it.

A lovely set. The mushroom and fern are both superb. I cannot really choose between them. The mono very nice too.

The mushroom is really nice, but I also love the classic still-life tones in #3, and that mono at the end is lovely too.

All great shots but the detail and texture on the mushroom gives it the edge for me.

Great set of images Bill, I do like the mushroom image but I must admit I prefer the fern image

Discarded - All interesting images, I also enjoyed the accompanying narrative. Many times I've had great ideas that by the Wednesday I haven't put into practice and I'm struggling to get something suitable. Time keeping is not one of my stronger qualities so many ideas never end up as more than that.

Flora - I like all the layers the "Pep Ventosa" style has created which give it a 3D look. I personally think the red section is fighting for my attention and would like to see it with a darker base to focus my attention on the flowers. I have tried this style on the "The Major Oak" in Sherwood Forest with interesting results.

Unusual - Lots of interest in the image while maintaining the central clock, a great image to invest time :) examining its many facets.

Snappers Choice - A great selection of images, each with their own merits. I do like the mushroom with the shape and form of the mono image my other favourite.

Great series of pics Bill. The mushroom one just edges it for me with the fern close behind.
Thanks Pete, I do like mushroom shots :D

Thanks Nick
Great collection of pictures there, the mushroom one is a good choice, a miniature world.
Thanks Simon, it was probably only about 3 centimeters tall
All great shots but the detail and texture on the mushroom gives it the edge for me.
Thanks Helen

It was a toss-up for me Duncan, and I always like shooting ferns at this time of year.

Week #16 - Trees

Just realized that time is running out and I couldn't really get out to much. Still playing with the "in the round style" so I'll use this one for this theme:

Apr 21-22-9.jpg

and even though, it's not in the theme I thought that I'd share something I did in the same way but on a much smaller scale (just because I like how it turned out):

Apr 23-22.jpg

I absolutely agree with the "wall" comments. That is really special!

I have to agree with all the above comments Bill. That is one special shot. The light is lovely and that line of trees or hedge line below the subject tree makes it really stand out.

Now I do like this tree shot, bottom part is very abstract sort imo. Great colours and I just love it maybe print it up for the wall.

Love your tree pic - could definitely see that on a wall.

Great creativity and a great result. Impressive image Bill.

Thank you all for the very kind words it means a lot to me. :)

I agree with the others.. this makes a cracking image.
