Darkslinger's 52 Week Challenge - 2022

Absolutely fabulous! Love it. I was going to have a go at trying this technique this week but time got the better of me, actually, glad I didn't as it would not have come up to this standard! Well done.

I agree with the others.. this makes a cracking image.
Thanks Helen, I appreciate your kind words.

Thank you Catherine, I look forward to what you come up with. It's still all new and shiny for me as I look for different subjects and try out new variations.

I know its not part of the challenge but love the dandelion shot, works well the process you have used

Thanks Scott, as I started playing with technique I wondered how it would look using a much smaller subject than I normally see so I picked a random dandelion while letting the dogs run at a local off-leash park.
Now I want to try it more using other small subjects, just got to find the right one. :D

Week #17 - Hole(s)

I was at the Party for the Planet festival on Saturday (shooting a Zumba show) and found a few holes to play with:

A little street photo (through the hole):

This was through one of the holes in a barrier like this one:

Then there was this rusted bracket that I thought was interesting:

And at the start of the day, I thought that the puddles on this picnic table made for a good image:

Interesting decision to have the hale in the lower half in the first one, my initial thinking was a targeting shot which would have suited a central figure overall. The puddles on the bench to me look better zoomed in for the detail and you have no idea how long the surface is.

Nice set and a good choice!

Good shots there I think you’ve picked the right one. Although I feel for your back getting that low to see through the hole.

Some good choices there Bill.
It would be the rusted bracket for me.
Thanks Peter

Thanks Stuart, all valid comments. I did play with the position of the hole in my chosen shot. I originally cropped it square but thought that, to me, the off-center positioning made for a more interesting composition.
I wasn't too concerned about getting detail out of the puddles because the remit of the challenge was to shoot a hole so the puddles play more of supporting role for the blackness of the main subject.
Thanks, I appreciate the critique, it makes me think more about the choices that I make when both shooting and processing shots.
Nice set and a good choice!
Thanks Dave.
Some great shots there Bill - I like your preferred choice.
Thank you Simon

Ahh, the beauty of having an articulating screen...no back pain!
Correct choice for me, good shot, difficult to get the exposure right?
Thanks Alan, it wasn't too difficult, because I shoot in manual and use a mirrorless camera. This allows me to directly see the how adjusting the aperture and shutter speed dials affect the overall exposure. It was one of the main reasons that I switched to mirrorless.

An eclectic mix of shots. Definitely #1 for me though... well spotted.

You have so many choices. I agree #1 for me as well.

All excellent pics but the picnic bench shades it for me with the dof progression.

Thanks Simon, I thought that it would make a good shot in the cloudy day light with the puddles.

Gosh, holes everywhere! I like your chosen shot with the hole in the lower half. Did you have to wait a long time for someone to walk past? I like the puddles on the wood too.

Thanks Bebop, no I was lucky. I took quite a few shots but most were either too far away or too close (all you could see were their legs).

Week #18 - Sunrise/Sunset

I wasn't thinking that I would get anything noteworthy this round with cloudy rainy skies, but the weather broke yesterday afternoon and the clouds cleared so I decided to go out to Crescent Beach for a looksee...

My final shot:

From just before on the other side of the pier

Just before that I was lucky and a flock of birds flew past:

And from the other side as I was scouting my shot:

From further down the beach about 45 minutes before sunset, I thought that I'd try a long exposure of the city in the distance with the sun lighting up the highrises:
May 08-22-7.jpg

And a shorter long exposure (5 seconds) of a post and the cloudscape:
May 08-22-8.jpg

Oh wow you managed some great shots for the theme. I like no. 3 and no. 1 best. A great set.
Thanks Bebop, I was lucky that the weather cleared for the one day. We're back to downpours again this morning.

A really good set Bill. No.3 is my favourite but they are all good.
A watery sunset as my mother used to say.

Loads of good shots there Bill.

First one is a winner and I also like the one with the city in the background.

Week #19 - Sport(s)
I had a number of ideas this week but ended up reading this article on why Dance Should be Considered a Sport.

My first thought was that I might shoot instruments of sport. I saw this bike and rather liked the lighting and the sign it was changed to:
May 13-22-6.jpg

I was also at Robson Square and saw this random red chair in the middle of the plaza with skateboarders whizzing past it. But when I looked at the images it seemed more about the chair than the boarders:

It was the next day that I read the article. Yesterday I attended the Korea Festival and shot a Zumba show and here are a few highlights:

I really like the reflections in the dance shots.
If the theme was "seating" then that chair would be a fantastic shot. It's quirky.
Wonderful expression in the last image.

The Zumba images are great, I like the way you've used the reflection in the puddle. I also like the bicycle image, but agree that the skateboarders image seems to be more about the chair. Nice set all round.

Great idea and the reflections add to the interest.
You've captured her intensity very well.
