Darkslinger's 52 Week Challenge - 2022

Nice set of pix and good choice for the chosen one.

I have a pal who lives in Vancouver.

Nice images. the scooter is the pick for me too.

Nice set Bill, my preference is for image 4

Great set of images, I like the mushroom and lighting images the most. The first one for me has too much empty space, cropping the figure to the left lower third tells me more of a story.

All good shots. What a variety.
Thanks David, lots to see and shoot... :)

Well that's just a lovely set Bill. Hard to choose as they are all so different. I think I like the 1st the best though.
Thanks Pete, yeah, I'm happy with the shot, I think that it tells a story.

Good set. For me, the scooter would have the edge, personal preference
Thanks Alan, that was a "grab-and-go" three shot HDR image. I liked the scooter's patina but didn't spent much time trying to compose the best image.

Thanks Dave, is he another photog?

Good set of images, my favourite has to be the second shot, nice clean BG.
Thanks Dave, I'm always partial to mushroom shots. It's a series of 8 images using the Olympus automatic focus stacking.

Nice images. the scooter is the pick for me too.
Thanks Jim.

Thanks Duncan. I like to take architectural shots but this angle gave me some interesting lines to play with through the overhanging glass.

Thanks Stuart, I see what you're saying about the first image Stuart, but when I crop it, the story becomes just about the man sitting there under the tree. The broad expanse in the background becomes more of a commentary on calmness and contemplation regardless of the scenery that we have in front of us (at least, that's how I'm justifying it, in retrospect :D ).

I'm glad someone liked the lighting shot, it was another "grab it while walking past" shot but I rather like how it turned out.

Nice collection - plenty of variety. I particularly like the light on the scooter
Thank you Simon!

A really interesting and varied set of shots. Personally I like the simplicity of the light bulb and some nice bokeh.

Interesting shot - you've got the background nicely blurred.
The scooter is a strong image, but my favourite is the funghi (or whatever it is).
Great variety Bill

Very hard to choose one, but I like the tall buildings through the glass. Lots of lovely angles and very different. I like the fungi too - lots of detail.

Thanks Helen, that's a shot that I liked as well, especially because I had to hold the camera up over my head and had some difficulty composing it.

Thanks Peter, I love taking mushroom shots but it's the wrong time of year for most of the ones around where I live. So I was happy to see this little guy.

Thanks Bebop, I've shot that particular image of the buildings before and I always seem to find different lines and angles for the image. Makes for an interesting series of images.

Week #6 - random alleys of Vancouver, tough to chose but I went with this one with the unexpected "planet" hanging above it. This is an alley off Granville street that is used for pop-up street events. The globe shifts through a series of colours.

Feb 12-22-8.jpg

I like shooting this alley because of the lights hanging overhead. I was lucking enough to have a young lady standing still and taking a picture with her phone. The shot is 1/5 of a second.

Feb 12-22-9.jpg

Saw the lights at the end of this alley as I was walking past and thought that it would make a good gritty image. A very slow shutter speed with someone walking past just gives the impression of a person

Feb 12-22-7.jpg

And, of course, an obligatory ICM shoutout to the theme technique. An alley in Gastown.

Hi Bill, I like the pictures but my favourite has to be the second image, it bright and draws me into the picture.

They are all good shots Bill. I think No.2 just edges it for me.
I also really like your ICM image.

Nice set Bill. No. 2 for me too.

Thank you all for the comments. I think that I would have chosen #2 but I didn't like the car parked at the stanchions. There normally aren't cars parked in this alley.

I like all the pictures. #3 is my favourite because of the gritty feeling. The ICM in #4 works well.

No2 for me - a definite alley (we've had a few roads)

I went for 2 initially, but the more I look at them the more I like number 4.
Nice set!

All nice, but I really like that first image. I love the low down viewpoint and the emptiness makes it quite spooky. I also really like the last ICM one The warm tones work really well. I suspect your ICM one needs to be in the main thread although perhaps you have already ticked the theme off?

I like the leading line of your chosen shot and am also drawn to the ICM due to the colours. A good selection.

All great images, I like the mono one the best. The second one I would personally crop to remove the outlier light at the top, when I zoomed in on the image it felt stronger without out and also brought the figure closer to the foreground

Thanks David, I saw that alley from across the street and thought that the light at the end would work well. It was a slow shutter speed but I got lucky have someone walk through the frame. You can just see the movement of the person.

thanks Donal, I was happy with how the ICM worked given that it is a really grungy alley.

Thanks Bebop, that would have been the third ICM image I would have posted in the main thread (I am partial to ICM and slow shutter speeds...).

A great point Stuart. I didn't even see that light until you pointed it out (now I can't not see it...).

The fog had been heavy and was just lifting when I went out this morning. A few from the start of my walk: I chose the first one just because of the seagull photobombing my shot :D

They all fit the theme but it's image No2 for me Bill ... it looks oppressive

All nice shots Bill, but number 2 hits the spot for me, although I might have been tempted just to crop out the fencing and left hand tree trunk and the sliver of lamppost on the right, but neither really hurt the shot.

All lovely shots. I would have spent forever choosing ha ha! The last is probably my favourite composition, but perhaps the least obvious for the theme. Very atmospheric shots.

Yep that works a treat. All nice but No1 has it!

Fits the theme.
in the first 2 the fog looks heavy.
Thanks Peter.

Thanks Duncan, I actually favoured the fourth one but it didn't look foggy enough for me.

Liking the street scene, but the seagull in the heavy fog is the right choice.
Thanks Alan, my thoughts exactly.

LOL, I didn't even see the lights on the right but you're right they could definitely go. I kind of like the fencing. Gives the image a grittier feel.

Yes you're right Bebop, but not foggy enough.

Thanks Dave.

I like the first one with the seagull, it stands out from the fog.
Thanks Keith.

I was going to go with a shot that I took later that day but couldn't think of the connection to the theme until after I posted. Now I think I could have said "Heavy clouds shrouding heavier mountains"

That's a nice shot. I love it when you're on a mountain above the clouds looking down, but this is amazing to see it like this.

Thanks Bebop, it was pretty spectacular. I don't think that my image really does it justice.

I think that you chose the right image. I especially like the seagull on the left overseeing the whole scene.

I was thinking that I would like to see the full resolution image.
The wild mountain over the urban area forms a wonderful contrast.

Thanks Donal, yes the full resolution image is much better. I usually export from Lightroom at 60% and then the upload to this the talkphotography platform further degrades the image.

A terrific atmosphere to all of those images Bill. I like the first the best though and you caught the gull at just the right moment.

All wonderful pictures that capture the theme really well. Your choice is the correct one but I would have been struggling between the one you picked and the second one (y)

Nice photos Bill, I like the street shot, but that's not 100% fitting the theme for me, the others do.
