daddy day cares Photo52 for 2010 part 1 weeks 1 to 26

I'm sure your focus was spot on. f/32 and 1/10sec is your problem :) You've got all afternoon to get back out there so good luck.

Andy, I think this would be well worth a re-shoot. focus issues aside, I like the thinking behind this shot, the composition is good and i like the colours too. Its all a learning curve isn't it?

 see above minus the focus issues. that is spot on now.

Thank-you for the comments folks.

Number 2 son wasn't too happy about the reshoot though. His knee was getting wet and cold from the snow

We all have to suffer for our art I guess :D

Spot on now. Well done for going back. I trust bribery was involved in getting your son out to help.

Bribery would be so wrong ;) I told him he'd have to walk to school if he didn't do it :naughty:

Beside Ive got two spare boys and a girl child if he hadn't done it :D

Seriously folks, I'm much happier now. This is the shot that I had envisaged. I thought it was funny that the nearest CCTV camera was turned to point at us when I took it

This week I have learnt to check the camera settings before taking a shot :)

That is very different from a lot of the street shots, and fits the theme realy well in addition to being a good shot.

Did you use some fill flash on that? Just going off the shadows.

Thanks Ian.

Yes. I did use fill in flash. I wanted to make sure that the black bag and coat kept some detail. It seems too have worked out OK.

Thanks Rob.

I drive past these boards when I go to work so I knew what I wanted to do. I had to wait until today before I got chance though.

Defo worth the reshoot. Good job, fella!

Thanks Dean and Jean

Jean - I think I'd prefer the New Forest to Stoke On Trent anytime.

The board next to the Stoke City one featured the other team from round here so I didn't bother with that one

good use of colour
good use of flash as fill light
good use of child (well there had to be a use for them)
good subject - fits the theme

Thanks Mike.

Number 2 boy child was very co-operative. I was going going to ask number 1 boy child but he just sulks and grunts all the time  Flippin' teenagers :bat:

I suspect it's written in some teenagers handbook somewhere
(if only they could be bothered to read it) :naughty:

Great to see another new take on the theme, bloody lucky to get a late equaliser against LIVERPOOL :dummy:

Well thought out and executed.

If we don't hear any more from you we'll know you've been arrested. :D

Well done Andy, I like that a lot. Excellent use of props and bribery :D

Bribery would be so wrong ;) I told him he'd have to walk to school if he didn't do it :naughty:

 Threats are always a good alternative to bribery . . . and cheaper too ;)

I didn't see the first shot Andy, but the reshoot is spot on
Lovely colours and composition and a brilliant take on the theme. Just the teeniest bit more space on the right to get his other foot in and the aerosol in his bag and it would be perfect.

thats great.. kids do come in useful sometimes :-)

very nice interpretation of the theme!

Another week where work got in the way of photography :shake:

I have experimented with slow sync flash for the this one.

I wanted to show the effect of my girl child spinning at speed on a roundabout in the park.

I think I've pulled it off but I'm not sure.

photo52week5speed.jpg

I got some very strange looks when I was tapeing my tripod to the roundabout  I also had my fingers crossed when it was spinning round waiting for the self timer to go off

No threats or bribery were needed this week :naughty:

Thanks Sarah,

I couldn't change the postion anymore as there were some railings at the side of the road. I didn't want them in the shot.

No bribery or threats this week. Mind you, she's not a teenager

I like it, perhaps there could have been a bit more detail in the face, but then again it may have detracted from the whole concept.

You're a brave man taping your pride and joy to the roundabout (that's the camera I'm talking about, not the subject...!)

I have to ask though... and this is a long shot... but is this in Newbury by any chance...?

:bat::bat::bat: City were my SECOND team. Insulting my first team is sooooo cruel.

Moving quickly on to Week 5! :)

This is a real 'arty' shot, Andy, and I love it. You've caught a great expression and just the right amount of blur.:thumbs::thumbs:

Jean

This is a really good shot, I think maybe a little more detail in the face would have been better but much better than I could have done

No it's not in Newbury. It's Hanley park for those that know Stoke On Trent. I'm not sure about brave. Maybe stupid is the word :cuckoo: You could smell my nervousness when I spun the roundabout

Glad you like it Jean. The original idea was to have the subject sharp and the background blurred. Slow sync flash put paid to the sharp subject but I think this works better.

I'm not sure which would have worked better. I took loads of shots but this was the best one. I also did some on a trampoline but prefer this.

Thanks for all the positive comments. I was really out of my comfort zone on this one but I guess that's why I'm taking part in this.

Glad to see you making good use of another child this week Andy ;)

I like this. Another unique take on the theme, and I would have loved to see the looks you got when you taped the camera to the roundabout.

I don't think that you need any more detail in the face, but my problem is that the bright white sky in the top LHS is pulling my eyes away from her. I think this would benefit from being cropped just above the top of her head.
I've had a look by scrolling down on my monitor and it's surprising how much more impact that gives to the shot.

I also had my fingers crossed when it was spinning round waiting for the self timer to go off

That sounds very brave! I would have personally tried to have your daughter and the roundabout thing in focus with just the background blurred though... it would have resulted in a cleaner shot IMHO. :)

This was as close to her head as I could crop comfortably. Any more didn't look right. Equally I think keeping the wider view has emphasised the speed. It seemed to lose impact if I cropped the sides to maintain aspect ratio.

Funnily enough the original concept for this shot was several years back. We were on Holiday in Wales. Took the kids to a park and the roundabout was freshly painted and really bright. I wanted to take exactly that shot with my Son and the roundabout in focus but the background blurred. When I tried it the CF card in that camera died and the camera woudn't work properly :bang:

I had been meaning to try it again ever since. When this theme came up up I tried to use slow sync flash to capture one of the kids playing drums. The idea was to get the movement of the arms and drumsticks blurred.

That didn't quite turn out as the subject was too brightly lit by the flash.

The natural progression of the two ideas (roundabout and slow sync flash) is the shot shown.

great shot for speed.. do prefer the cropped version.. looks like you had a lot of fun doing it ;)
