daddy day cares Photo52 for 2010 part 1 weeks 1 to 26

Have you ever had one of those days?

I have just set up for the reshoot and wanted to try it with my portaflash light shot into an umbrella. Checked with the flash meter and it told me to use F16 at 200 ISO.

I used a hot shoe adaptor to link the PC lead to the flash but the Nikon won't play nicely with it :bonk:

Plan B was to use a Fuji Finepix S7000 which I know will work with the PC to hotshoe gizmo. All well and good except that I can only set F8 nothing more and I cannot use anything less than 200 ISO. Every shot was drastically over-exposed even with the flash on 1/4 power.

So back to the Nikon with the SB600 on the top of it. Now the camera batteries are flat and it won't fire :bang:

The reshoot did not go well :thumbsdown:

On the plus side I can tell that the flowers the other way up will look much better when I ge the equipment working.
 
No Andy not bad. I think Sarah's comments are spot on. I would like to see you reshoot it, if you have time.

I've just seen the theme for week 3 and first thoughts are it's going to be another bloody still life :bang:
 
Very nicely done on the tulip reshoot. The improvement is vast with the leaves now not overpowering the flowers. You've managed to minimise the shadow as best you can, the only thing that could help there would be to light from underneath. Very nice image.

I am much happier with this one. I need to get the flash off the camera and get some other light source as well for future images.
 
second one is brilliant much better than the first
 
agree with others.. the second tulip shot is fab.. much prefer it to your 1st version..

love how you've arranged them with the stems over lapping!

I'm really pleased with the second version. I guess thats the reason we do these challenges - I have listened to advice and reshot it for a great improvement.

Not exactly original I know. I did find this difficult to come up with anything new.

It did, however, give me a chance to play with my new light tent and radio triggers :D

Let me have your thoughts please folks.
 
Week one, I would have preferred something between the two edits I think, or maybe just a brigter background?

Week two, last edit looking into the tulips is very nice - much more interest there and plenty of depth too.

Week three, very nice, lighting's great, nice little reflection you got going there too - but a little soft maybe?

I don't think the image is soft. I think the issue is the yellow pepper is over-exposed but I couldn't tone it down without affecting the overall shot.

The shot apart from the yellow is really sharp. So much so that I had to clone out every speck of dust on the black acrylic :bang:

I took quite a few different takes on the pepper theme but this was the version I was happiest with. The others all showed the creases up in the background of the light tent.
 
The update of week 2 works much better. I've had a little play and left it in my gallery if you want a look, contrast and saturation tweak and USM

Your chopped theme works really well, nice vivid colours against a dark background. Hope you made something nice with them afterwards.

Week 3 is excellent. Looks like something you'd see in a magazine. Also, the reshoot of the tulips is nice. Well done :thumbs:
 
Blimey, a 52 that seems to have completely passed me by! Starting at the start (well, it seems the obvious place), I'm not keen on the connect 4 shots... just not workign for me full stop. Sorry I'm not skilled enough to tel you why. I really like your second Tulip shot with them lying down though, and also this weeks chopped shot! The light's quite harsh, but there's some great colours and reflections. :thumbs:

I obviously need to polish my photoshop skills as well as my photography ones.

For week 3 the black acrylic is from the front of my fish tank cabinet so was best not to eat the props :gag:

I agree the light does seem quite harsh. This was actually shot inside a light tent and both flashes were on 1/4 power though.
 
I love peppers. Lovely colours and you can just taste them from here. Seems you've got a good reflective surface underneath. If you had the space to the sides I would have pulled back a little to keep from cutting the reflection off at the bottom.

Thank-you. I need to think of something for the background in future. I guess black velvet would work but not sure what to use for white. I might just get a paper roll and throw the bits away that I use. Lining paper is good but a bit restrictive as it's so narrow. Banquet roll may be OK. I'll find some and see how wide it is.
 
I like the CHOPPED peppers
they work surprisingly well against a dark background
good composition, well lit!
 
Andy, sorry I missed you last week... the second shot for week 2 is much much better. It fits the poem really well. As for chopped, excellent colours and details, and love the background.
 
Love the re-take for week 2, much better than your original shot. I like the concept behind week 3, but the colours seems a little week, especially the yellow, still, it fits the theme perfectly :)
 
It’s more original than you may think Andy.
I don’t think I’ve actually come across any other peppers this week.

Lovely colours and nice reflection. As somebody else said, it would have been nice to have kept the whole reflection in shot, the bottom is just cropped off but it still works very well.
The yellow peppers are maybe a tad overexposed, but a lovely shot all the same.

p.s. What fish do you have?

The black acrylic is the front panel from a marine tank that I am trying to sell. Even though it has no fish in it's still full of water and live rock so is running.

I do have another marine tank with 2 common clowns, bicolour blenny, Randalls Goby/ pistol shrimp pair, flasher wrasse, couple of hermit crabs, various snails, soft corals and two peppermint shrimps.

Week 4

Not a good week.

I had the perfect shot in mind and should have taken it yesterday when the weather was sunny and bright.

I got up this morning and it had snowed :bang:

The net result of this is me rushing to take a shot and not checking the camera settings :nono: . Consider this shot as a placeholder to show the image I will be putting in. I fully intend to return and reshoot this with the camera set up correctly so it will be in focus.

Shot now replaced.
