D90 Owners Thread - Anything D90 related

Could you please advise me on what tripod and head I should buy in the future.
Thanks
Gary

Evening Gary, hope you are enjoying your most wise choice of cameras :)

Regarding (tripod) heads, I picked up a Manfrotto 464RC2 head last week from Jessops for £36

The 10% online reservation code TRIPODS10 seemed to work no probs!

I purchased a Hama Star42 tripods from Asda's a little while back (~£12) and a CMP2 Camlink monopod. I agree that they are not the most expensive of brands/models, but for me they will suffice perfectly as I learn this new world of DSLR's

Hi
Yes I am loving every minute of it. There is a lot to learn though but the people on here are a great bunch.

Yup, they most certainly are.

Also, I found the original D90 manual a little, ermm, uninspiring! I would recommend that you may consider an 'after market' one!! (I went for Thom Hogans, but many recommend either the D90 for Dummies or Simon Stafford version)

p.s - Maybe you are already aware of this, but this will soon become your most loved and hated website;

Your wallet/wife won't forgive you!

Yep agree about the manual looking to get the Tom Hogans book this week. Yes already know about the website :)

Yep, the problem with Nikon manuals (and I guess the same would be true for just about any other camera manufacturer) is that they tell you how to operate the camera, not how to use it. They're a bit like the manuals you get with a car. Sure they tell you where all the switches and buttons are and what they do, but they make, in this case, the valid assumption that you can already drive.

Personally I found that a general book on photography combined with the manufacturers manual was all I needed to get started, but I can see where a model specific aftermarket handbook could be extremely useful.

Tell me why I should still get a D90 now that the D5100 is available, ( not that I can afford it) apart from the lack of an internal motor, which although I went for the D50 for that reason even after the D60 was out, I haven't missed it, all (both) my lenses being af-s.

Difficult for me to answer Ken, because went for the D90 for the AF motor. MY lenses are all AF-S at the minute, but I like the flexibility it affords me. I can look at buying a lens now without having to check if it's got an internal AF motor. I also liked the additional control dial and buttons on the D90; I can make more adjustments while shooting without having to faff around in the menus. I'm sure someone who's very clued up will answer better than me!

Hello fellow d90 users. Picked my d90 and lenses Nikon 18-105 up this morning, got an extra £50 off the nikon 70-300 :): bought 2 Sandisk Extreme 4gb class 6 cards.Battery charged up so I have been taking a few pictures. Need to find out how to upload them on here so you can advise me where I am going wrong. Could you please advise me on what tripod and head I should buy in the future.
Thanks
Gary

If you're using FLickr, just click the share button next to the facebook/twitter icons etc and select the BBCode, medium size option and copy and paste that in here!

Has the 5100 got two control wheels? I found having 2 control wheels and the top LCD so very handy when I had my d90.

The 5100 is a lovely size though.

Well after much deliberation over what to replace my D3000 with, which apart from much bad press, I have been very happy with, but feel that want more control easily available, I am hoping that my newly acquired D90, brought from Moos3h, will turn up tomorrow. Did not think that I could justify the great D7000, so awaited specs of D5100, which although good, with no inbuilt motor, pentaprism, and still lacking the ease of control that the D90 offers, (although has great low light performance), decided to get myself a 2nd hand D90,which on the nikon product list does sit above the D5100 that appears to be a 2nd level starter DLSR rather than a serious enthusiast DLSR. hope that I am going to see the improvement in results that eveyrone talks about.

Thanks Chris,
I was pretty sure I was still going with the D90 anyway, I just wondered what others thought, now I just have to decide whether to get a used one that I can pick up locally, or to take the risk of saving more for a new one.

Hi All,

I have a D90 and love it.

Can anyone recommend slightly cheaper batteries and charger for the D90 as I have 2 official EN-EL3e's and 1 official MH-18a Charger?

I have a spare battery and one charger, but I am going on a weekends course in a few months and I know that 2 batteries won't be enough because the course is detailed as shooting from 8:00 to 2:00 the next day, then back up again for similar time the day after.

So I think I will need plenty of juice for both days, and maybe a 2nd charger so I can charge at least 2 batteries over night so that I don't miss out on the next days shooting.

Any recommendations?

Cheers
Matt

Have you consider getting a battery grip? One of the benefits is to have 2 batteries available, so you can shoot longer, without changing. Also comes with a 6 battery AA adapter, so you could also pack some rechargeable AA's.

See my previous post regarding buying a grip on ebay for not very much money.

The 7dayshop ones are getting good reviews, think there was a small discussion about them in the forum somewhere. And the Energizer one is £11.99 there as well.

I am saving for a D90 which is taking a long time being on a pension. When I do have enough dosh, can I use the Sandisk Ultra 2GBs I use in my D50? I know I can get faster and more storage eventually, I also know I won't get the best from the camera, but I will want to use the D90 straight away without having to save for longer still, will I be OK?

Have had my D90 for 4months, being my first dslr. Quality camera, feels good in my hand. Just need to pull my finger out and go and shoot more pics.

ive now been given the choice for easter of a d90 or the new d5100, im thinking stick with my original plan of the d90 as the general opinion seems to be that its better than the d5100 or is that not the case?

I haven't used a D5100 but I personally would prefer a D90 as it is just that much more user friendly and produces fantastic quality photos. If the 5100 is anything like the 5000 it will feel like a toy in comparison.

Im new to all this and so im in the market for my first DSLR but i really cannot decide i really like the d90 so i want an honest answer....And dont shoot me for asking

Is the d90 out of date?

Looking for Lightroom advice.
I have created a preset in Lightroom for better skin tones Its nothing flash, I use the camera calibration tab and goto the red channel and drop the saturation to -27 and +2 hue
What does anyone else do?
As its now a preset I can just apply on import.

No!

I'm thinking of getting a Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8 lens for my D90.

Is this an unbeatable combo or is there some competition out there? The reviews seem pretty good.

Also, If anyone has this lens is the lack of VR an issue when changing from the kit lens?

Cheers
Mark

Mark, I had the same combo up until not long ago....Its a brilliant Combo!!
