D90 Owners Thread - Anything D90 related

i have been looking to get a sdhc i have seen a Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 10 Memory Card going cheap, but i do not know how reliable they and has any one use one?

Buying a card with higher than class 6 is somewhat a waste of money. The speed of transfer from the buffer to the card is as much a function of the camera electronics as the card speed. Once you get above class 6 it's the camera that limits the transfer speed so even a class 20 (if such a thing exists) won't speed up the transfer.

i thought anthing above a class 4 there was no differance on the 90
and only off camera ie card reader would there be

well, did a quick non-scientific test with my old class 4 card holding down the shutter taking repeat shots and then the class 10 card doing the same and WITHOUT DOUBT the class 10 was very much faster...

edit: i'll try and do a bit more testing tomorrow to confirm..

Class 10 is cheap now so i would come in handy upgrade time D7000 :)
wouldnt want to lose 16 gig :bang:

hey guys, just wondering was exposure compensation people have settled on on their d90s. I was using -0.7 but have recently moved to -1.0. I was wondering whether this was the norm really...

I bought a refurbished D90 with a year's warranty with Nikon in Jan from the Ebay branch of a retailer. For the first time since then, I have been using my nifty fifty wide open today, and noticed it is front focussing really badly. Most of my pictures from my day out are oof. Did some quick checks now using a couple of lenses on my keyboard and it kinda confirms it must be the camera. I intend on doing the proper line/45 degrees test tomorrow.

What do I do at this stage? Can it be fixed easily, or by firmware update (still running 1.00 so far), or does it normally fixed by Nikon or other repair company? Finally, is this something normally covered under warranty?

Edit: just searched the forum for similar issues; seems there's a lot to read and check to determine if it's lens/camera and if it's not something else like shake/poor contrast, etc.

Myself, -0.3 - -0.7 depending on what I'm shooting !

I just bought 2 x 4gb Class 10 Transcend SD cards for my D90, I don't like the idea of having 8 or 16gb of files on one card, so would rather fill one and change it, then if it fails you have only lost 1/2 your stuff..

Begs the question...has anyone ever had a card fail half way through a shoot? Not doubting your point. Just wondering how often this occurs? I found my 8gig just enough on a walk round on holiday but thinking of adding a 4 gig as a spare.

It's not just a case of a card failing though. A colleague of mine went on a round the world cruise and only took a 16gb card in his camera. Two days before they were due to return home the camera and all his photographs were stolen.

Yep, had one fail on me part the way through a family get together.

Fortunately had several spares with me.

I once had a cheap tesco sd card fail on me on its first try took about 30 pictures and then deleted a picture then the card failed i will never use a cheap card again.
:'(

Anyone thinking of getting a battery grip, for your D90, look no further than the linkdelight one on ebay.

Received at the start of the week and can honestly say I'm amazing by the quality, given the very cheap price.

I really look the part now, just need to actually take some good photographs

i'm sorry, not that i don't feel any sympathy for your friend, but to go on a round the world trip armed with a single 16gig card and to not make backups is just madness!

Do Nikon still make the D90 with the D7000 out or do they not class it as a D90 replacement?

I wondered about this as I am saving for a new D90 rather than get a used one and I was told that Nikon are still listing and manufacturing the D90. I don't think they regard the D7000 as an actual repacement although it will eventually cease to be available. I will take the risk however as if waiting for a new one fails I can always go for a used one.

Some cracking deals to be had on a D90 at the moment. I would jump while you can as the D7000 seems the like the D90 replacement and this will be further confirmed when Nikon announce the D300 replacement.

I have been wanting to get a D90 for some while so have been waiting for the price to drop! :D:D

When I was looking at getting mine, the second hand prices on ebay weren't much cheaper that a body only price for a new D90. Made sense to get a new one!

I asked a guy who had one but I knew he wasn't looking to sell but figured he might tell me how much he would want if he did sell and he said £450. He also said from my point of view it wouldn't make sense to get a used one when for £509 I could get a new one. I see more and more dealers are asking this price, will it drop to less than £500?

Anyone shooting a siggy 10-20mm on their d90? Getting good results? Any examples? Thinking of getting one

Yes, I have that combo and it's great!

I've a few here on Flickr but they are not sorted by lens type - maybe I will organise a Sigma 10-20 set.

I doubt it would drop much more to be honest...

At that price, its a steal....go for it! :)

Thanks Vishal,
As soon as I have enough pennies I shall! I'm hoping they will be available long enough for me to avoid having to sell my D50 or Opticron spotting scope.
I'm looking forward to being a regular contributor to this thread.

I would have thought they'll be available for a little while still....

Failing that, you could always buy a used one :)

Just bought one, WOw what an upgrade form a D40x. So much easier to use. Designed so well

I'm quite glad that huge plastic screen cover fell off my D90 a few weeks ago. I much prefer the very thin sticky plastic thing I have now covering the screen.

I've just put a GGS/Delamax screen protector on mine, much better than that huge white thing!

had to use a D60 a few weeks back when I forgot my battery (but never mind that :p )
the difference in usability is phenomenal, for price/performance D90 can't be beat I dont think.

Heard today that the D90 is being discontinued?! Is there any truth to this?

Source was a (very helpful) chap in Jessops Poole (who also spoke very highly of the D90 of course) who said he believed the D7000 is the replacement.

Even if the D90 is being replaced (the D7000 has be around for a few months now and they're still making D90s), it is a cracking camera capable of superb IQ and very usable in most situations.

Sure, the D7000 has more pixels (wooo) and more AF points (I usually only use 1) and a part magnesium chassis but my D90 is far more capable than I am at the moment. With a SB-600 and 50mm f1.8 low light isn't a problem either.

I would buy another in a heartbeat if anything happened to mine.

I think you misunderstand my thinking...I want a D90 but can't afford one right now...was just making sure I'd still be able to get one when I can!

LOL - fair point I guess.

As far as I know, the D90 is still in production. There are plenty around and if a genuine replacement does come out there will be lots of used ones about as people jump on the 'new gear' band wagon
