Keep it under your hat but a modern alfa is just the same under the skin as any other euro box. Mine is the hardest working and most reliable car I've owned. And that's on the back of working through the Honda range.

The thing is that we don't want every b****r getting one. Would ruin the whole deal. ;)

Another vote for the VAG 170 tdi.

170 hp is not to be sniffed at but it's the torque that really impresses, 258 lbs/ft as standard means a great turn of speed when needed & relaxed drive & huge mpg when you don't.

The other useful thing is that you can choose from various marques within the group ie.
Audi, Seat etc.

I chose the Octavia vRS & am very pleased with it:)

I promise not to spread the word too far, but please allow me to qute that verbatim at Yves Geza, as its only been 2 years since I first asked him for an Alfa. He says I can have one, IF I find space in the workshop for an extra ramp as he is NOT having it tying up the paying ones every week :bonk:

EDIT: having just read your first post properly, a 159 would also tick a few boxes, a bit less petrolhead looking, but still out for some fun ;)

If it were me, I would be looking at a BMW 123D M Sport. I have the 120D M Sport and it's fast fast fast. The 123 is the same engine but with two smaller turbos rather than one big one.

Very very comfortable too.
 
Skoda Octavia VRS. German build but cheaper price. In my opinion it looks nice than a Golf too. The boot on the hatchback is huge. The Estates boot is like a black hole.

It's a great car, performance, economy blah blah blah.

The only bit of advice that I would give to anyone looking at a new car, as it's the only one that is one size fits all, is don't get a diesel if you don't need to.

They are great if you need to do lots of miles but talk about sucking the very soul out of driving. Now before any of you tractor driving folks come back and tell me how your horrid smoke factory is faster than this that or whatever, it's not about 0-60's or 30-100 figures. It's about how a car makes you feel when the engine sings.
 
To buy one new, you would need to have an allergy to money. :thumbs:
 
we had an x type a few years back, with the sports sus and v6 went like **** off a shiny, handled very nicely in devon lanes (lots of tight corners and only marginally better than the welsh on warning you about them)

and they look so luverly

you'll note that the supercar firms pipe in English Exeter students to do the actual mechanical bits as part of the third year :D

The Alfa 166 is/was the worst depreciating car on the market, after 3 years it retains 14.4% of it's new price - and the top of the range model was £32k :nuts:

I have the Honda Civic 2.2 iCDTI it's my first diesel after a V6 Vauxhall, its a drivers engine, lots of torque and very revvy. I don't need the sound of a pertol engine being thrashed through an exhaust the size of a wheelie bin to enjoy driving. Sport diesels are very popular now don't knock them.
 
Well it's pretty much settled -it's going to be an Audi TT (new shape) around June/July time. Will be looking for a very late low mileage fully loaded one.

Anyone got one? Got any advice on what to look for/ avoid? Known issues?

I'm open minded Brian tbh, I wouldn't let it stop me if I find the right one. They work well it seems? Just don't want a roadster or a diesel - gotta be the coupe.
 
Go for the roof down job, we can all have cheap haircuts then :D

I love the dsg boxes, :thumbs: Wouldn't want a repair bill for one though :eek:
 
LOL. Done the roadster thing with the S2000 . We can get all the camera gear in the TT which is a minimum requirement.

I'd have to advise against it, having got through 4 of them in the last 9 months. Costwise, I think they are about 4k a pop - luckily all mine were under warranty!

Having said that, they actually are a fantastic box, at least the principle is fantastic.

I remember reading your tale of woe Mr Outlore, I still suspect your car is an oddity as I know a fair few owners of the DSG box in VAG form and have encountered many many more vehicles with the Ford Powershift version, and none have had similar issues with the transmission.

The internal workings of the transmission are fantastic, I was lucky enough to have a good old play with a cut away unit and could watch the pre selection of the gears and clutch actuation :D
 
I have an '09 58 plate 313bhp 350Z GT with under 10k on it that would fit the budget lol...

If you've listed the Mk2 MR2 I've had 6 and there great fun and plenty of change in you wallet, if you like jap an MX-5 Turbo is an absolute hoot (don't knock em till you've drive one :) )
 
I've had the MK2 MR2 - lovely motor as you say and with a great cockpit- just looking a bit dated now.

The new 370Z was another serious contender, but it's an only car so it has to be a bit more practical. Anyway I'm trying to do 'sensible'..... sort of. I'm tryin' - honest! :D
 
If you like the fun side but want the practicality side of things have you thought a bit different and had a loko at the Murano :)

I know there are others out there and am biased towards the Nissans but it's what I do and I know whats available lol :)
 
Good performance for a 4X4, but 0-62 in 8.9 seconds - that's like a fortnight! :D
 
The Murano isn't about the 0-62 it's when it's moving at speed that it's fun :)

For cheap'ish 4 seat fun Munaro/VXR-8 which is an absolute hoot if you can affrod new tyres every couple of weeks :)

LOL. All good suggestions, and appreciated, but it's gonna be a TT - just a question of finding the right one.
 
Be careful with TT's if you've got a history of fun cars (looking at earlier post), every single person I know whose had one has sold it quickly is it isn't the most exciting drive if you like using the car reasonably hard, it handles to well if that makes any sense!
 
Ok, so just a little tempter. Why stick with a slow car like the TT which everyones got.

Slight off field but why not get something like a TVR. Griffiths go for 12-15k and have a huge boot. Easy maintenance, plenty of parts, good club.
 
Well the TT should be about the same performance as the Type R - so pretty quick, certainly quick enough in the real world on public roads. I'm not looking for anything quicker, (unless it's the TTS :p ) just an enojoyable quick drive and fairly practical.
 
Apparently though, it isn't - spoken to two mates who gave up on them after 6 months and then bought other cars - one went to a Focus ST, the other to an Astra VXR...
