MkV Golf R32:
- similar size and practicality of type r
- better performance
- better noise
- better grip
Identical 0-60 actually although the VW has more low down grunt.

I like the new TT more than the first one - big bucks though.

Down to your own choice at the end of the day Cedric  Myself I have been through the fast car days so comfort is my choice now. As for reliability love em or hate em, the most reliable car on the road taken from a peoples survey was Lexus

Rich, that's entirely sensible and that should be my mindset now at my age but I know if I went too sedate I'd hate it from day one. :gag:

Agreed Lexus build quality is great -just not my cuppa.

You can get Z4s for under 20K but probably not the M4. My neighbour put his Z4 up for sale the day after Clarkson said they were cars for people who put their keys in a bowl at parties.

What about an Alfa? A decent specced 147 or even a Mito if its not too small. Should be some good deals on 147's as I think there due to be replaced shortly.

You can get a brand new, fully specced Mito for less than 20k, big wheels, turbo and all sorts. And from what I've heard they're great fun to drive, especially the larger engined ones :naughty:

PMSL. Classic Clarkson.

I read somewhere they are putting an improved Turbo diesel in the Type R soon. I have the 2.2 version in the 5 door sport, its a lovely torquey engine which can give you great mpg when needed and go like stink as well.

They do reckon the 2.2 diesel is a good drive.

Have you seen the Mugen Type- R? £38K and it costs Honda £190K for every one they build! Probably why we're only getting 20 in the UK.

Yes, its a cracker. But I like the £120 road tax on the diesel :D

If it were my money it would go on a Seat leon TDI sport with DSG.
Cupra R is on its way though, but likely to be just out of price range.

I wouldn't spend 20k on an alfa unless I wanted to watch it turn into 10k in 6 months ;) beautiful cars but that depreciation is a killer.

My last car was a Subaru Legacy and I was really impressed with the drive, it went wherever you pointed it whatever the weather.

19k would get you a pretty quick forester :D

Golf GTTDI 170 brake can be had on a contract hire for less than £400 per month. GTI petrol even cheaper. If you want new, then look at contract hire, you will feel much better about the fact when it loses all its not yours, you give it back.

I work in finance, and have just done a BMW 520d M sport with full leather and Sat nav for £410 per month. £34k of car for £15k over three years, can't sayfairer than that.

Failing that, the new Seat (can't remeber its name) is the old A4 (exactly the same, just a badge change so i am told) and Skodas are good too.

Either that, or keep what you have, save save money and buy more lenses.

I just see that as £400 a month wasted, 15k spent and no car at the end of 3 years

Buy a 12 month old car for £400 a month and it has a value at the end, I guess some people have to have new, i've never owned a new car as I couldn't stand that crushing depreciation as soon as you reach the end of the street

if i was in your position it would be one of the following:

fabia vrs: 55mpg yet quick enough to blow must stuff away
octavia vrs: as above but bigger and nicer interior (especially better driving position for the taller driver)
both the skoda's are discrete enough for people to recognise you as an older member of society, yet quick enough for people to think your a racing driver
s3: rapid but a bit (don't know how to say this and please don't be offended if you own one) '******ish' IN MY HONEST OPINION

then getting slightly older (driver not car) something like volvo t5..

Well - I worked out it's not 'hairdresserish' but there's still a lot of permutations there!

:D

I don't think they bother connecting them up now!

Steve.

Optional extra on the new models, I think? We used to get stuff to spray on the number plates to bamboozle speed cameras in SA, wonder when this will come as OEM? Mind you, a lot of people just took the plates off, the fine was far less than a speeding ticket!

Do you know how much a used NSX costs?
legacy R Spec B ?

I would go play with the classifieds search on pistonheads, it is a pleasant way to pass an evening...

If I had 20k to spend on a car, I'd be looking at either VW Scirroco or Alfa Romeo Brera, two of the best looking cars on the market at the moment (IMHO).

I really don't believe the story about the Mugen Honda costing Honda £ 190k apiece. Maybe with some very creative accounting!

My Mercedes C43 was walloped up the back so I'm looking for a replacement in case it gets written off, but my budget is about £ 5k. Subaru Legacy RSK B4 is high up the list at the moment.

I  the scirroco styling. if they bring out a better TDI i'd buy one in a flash

What about a scooby? 2.5 WRX £19,680 otr

Pfffft, three pages of totally missing the opportunity here.

I know you said that you have got the 2 seater sports car out of your system. But I'll be selling my BMW Z4m next year. Just over 8000 miles on an 06 plate and mint.
Stupidly quick. In a different league. Fully specced and cost just short of £45,000 new. It will be going for about £24,000 I reckon.

Kev.

The production Brera isn't quite as nice as the prototype version, but I give them an extra long stare each time I see one. They hold their money wonderfully as well by previous Alfa standards!

That has to be one of the best looking cars on the planet - drop dead gorgeous. Still a lot of bad voodoo associated with Alfas though, perhaps not justified nowadays. Looking like that it ought to be quicker than it is though. Lovely drive no doubt, but you'd have Clios ****ing all all over you. :D

Not justified?!! You want to ask round here mate - engine blow ups like you've never seen and more other problems than you can shake a stick at.

A friend of mine actually had a 159 engine explode on him during a test drive!!!

No, if you want a piece of sexy art to look great on your driveway, get the Alfa, they look gorgeous.... but if you plan on trying to move it under its own power...

Cedric I have the VW Scirocco, nice tool, will do 50 mpg and goes like **** off a shovel .... looks rather nice as well

Maybe one day they will make a proper hot version of the Scirocco.... :D

50mpg from petrol  thats damn good

Better than that at times on the motorway, if you can believe the computer display. Of course it all depends how heavy you are on the welly peddle ;)

I think it is all about actually burning all the fuel available, in days gone by this did not happen, but clever engineering has changed this.

I was told that this was a supercharged, turbocharged engine, not sure as my days of being really interested in what goes on under the hood are long gone.

LOL. It's a shame that Italian design flair doesn't extend to the moving bits. :D
