Daily Carol's 365 from 12th December 2012 - A Year of Happiness

Carol it all seems to be a little soft and a lot happening in the shot imo.

One thing I have learnt since doing my challenge is try and plan shot by looking at the surroundings !!

Thanks Vince ..... Was actually thinking that myself .... a lot happening in the B/G. Had an hours walk today and nothing at all caught my eye - grey skies, damp (and bit of rain) so when I saw them I thought they might work okay - this was the best out of the lot :( Might mess about at home and see what I can do

Will plan better next time :)

Carol we all have days like that  I fully understand about the conditions outside etc and this is when your imagination will kick in and you will start seeing objects differently :thumbs:

The beauty of the photographers eye never one the same:)

well I will be hard at work tonight making my lightbox :) Have been foraging at the shop and got 2 perfect boxes so might make on white (or cream depending on what I have) and one darker - experiment with those I think :) Blame Kev for the Blue Peter moments :D

This is so true Carol...my left eye definitely does not see what the right one does... Its hard to get good eyes...

I do also think its the colour of the subject that matters too... These are dark berries compared to the lushness of the bg ... So maybe I see more of the bg.. If they were red..they'd be jumping out at me.. Have you tried increasing the contrast and doing them as mono..or like vince does with sepia..changing the tone might bring the berries out? How about cross processing..this can be effective? though if the berries aren't sharp then mono might be a good option...

I can be blamed for most things girl.... Italy even tried the leaning tower of pisa on me...but I had photos of me on a beach in eastbourne ... They couldn't prove anything...

had actually converted them to B&W but thought the colour would be better so deleted it  Will have another try and see what happens :)

Doppelganger maybe ????

I agree with Vince.... it is soft, and the background takes over... you could try some extra processing as has also been suggested...
Are you shooting in RAW... and, what focus point are you using?... I would have tried for more DOF myself...
Some days..nothing catches your eye, when it comes to getting a shot....

I was part of a cloning process many eons ago so you might have a point... They broke the mould but kept detailed plans no doubt... Darn those government facilities offering free sweets for dna samples..

Woo hoo i am finally home and can use smilies again!!:D:D:D hope your xmas was good Carol!.....

There's no point me pointing out what everyone has said, this time of year can be a nightmare for photos and weather just doesn't play ball... The positives is you are out searching hard and it is still a sweet shot, i like it..

I decided to experiment a bit with running water tonight. Put a glass under the tap and let it run and just caught as many images as I could. So today I have done 2 images as wasnt sure which one I really liked
Don't forget these were an experiment but critique will be welcome :)

Although in the first one you had more of the water in focus than in the 2nd one, I prefer the 2nd one as I liked the background

Thanks Lee :) I didnt think photographing water could be so hard but I tried :) Yes the 2nd one seems to look better because of the background (an upside down jelly dish on top of the glass) The first one is more focussed because of the amount of water in one spot I think. Will keep trying and get better :) I WILL get one of those waterdroplets on its own :)

Thanks Kev - when I dont finish work until it is dark makes me have to think and I just happened to see a photo of water running and though ' hmmm I wonder....' . :)

You should have tried for a water droplet, looking at your images you'd probably have got it.
It's just a glass bowl about 6 inches under the tap, fill it with water and catch the drops as they fall, don't have the water dripping too fast.... aim at about just above the level of the bowl... You can use coloured card underneath your bowl, and a different colour behind it.... Can't quite remember my settings, other than I used manual and on camera flash... But I can look them up if you like.

Can't believe you gave it away for a toffee!!

Thanks T :) Have a trip out planned for tomorrow so hoping the weather stays dry hmmmmm judging by these strong winds it might be a 75% chance Im staying in though :( Oh well more time to spend on lightbox :)

Wonderful Heron photo's  much better than I've ever managed to get  I think that I'd crop the winter berries a little tighter though

Matt

Thanks Matt - Im very pleased with the Heron shots :) The berries are going to be cropped and converted within the next day or two :)

These are super carol, water looks so lovely captured! well done you!:thumbs:

Thanks Lee :D will definitely try that way - had the bowl upside down as well as the glass. am trying to think what else I could use behind the glass bowl rather than card .... I tried it on manual with the camera flash but if you could look up the settings then that would be great :D Thanks

I'll look up the settings when I get on my laptop, my bowl was placed on a board, which was over the sink, to get it the right height, the bowl was filled with water, it was better than using a glass, for me anyway...
Use anything, the lid of a quality street tin, a coloured plate....? One of mine was one of those yellow hi-vis jackets.... Use whatever you can...

You calling me cheap girl!!! I'll tell you I held out until they offered a years supply....

cheap? errrrr no I'm not :shake: a years supply isnt TOO bad I suppose ..... depends how long they lasted you though knowing that you would have eaten them all as quickly as you could so nobody stole them from you :)

Great :D Cant wait now :)

Carol, in your bowl of water, you could always add food colouring, although, I never did......
My settings for the water droplet shots I'd posted here that you'd looked at ...
I used the kit lens 18-55mm on my Canon 500D or my 40D
Set my camera to manual, with on camera flash - 1/250s f5.6 ISO 100
I hope that helps....

same lens for me as well .... canon 1100D, manual, camera flash on .... all same as mine including ISO down to 100.

Will check the 1/250s and f5.6 .... just been on flickr to check the exif data and nothing there anymore :( Oh well will try again tomorrow :) Thanks for all that Lee - much appreciated :)

No worries.... good luck, the hardest part is getting your drops in focus....
And, have fun!.

I keep seeing these and say I'll try it too but still haven't, was it easy ish?? Lol

One other thing....you also need to have your lens in manual focus.... if you leave it in auto focus, it will struggle to focus on a moving drop....
