Canon EOS R Series Cameras

The L bracket interfering with the screen is a concern I have. I tried a generic one I have on my 5Div on the R5 last night and it was preventing the screen openeing fully to the side.
I think this will be a problem with most generic L brackets, and also cover the battery door hatch as lot of the generic ones have a longer base plate.

Yes, I can see this being a problem. The generic one is fine on my 5D, it allows use of the battery door too but the bracket fouled the screen and battery door on the R5.

Smallrig seem to do a dedicated one for the R5ii.

It looks like Ulanzi now use the Falcon brand and they do an R5ii cage, which solves the battery and screen issue. However whether it's too much metal for your needs I don't know as it's aimed primarily for video shooters https://www.falcam.com.cn/falcam-f22-f38-f50-quick-release-camera-cage-for-r5ii-c00b4802_p239.html

Or if you want to go more left field you could look at one of this style https://silencecorner.net/collections/atoll-series

I did try one of these out for a while and going from landscape to portrait is really quick plus you get full access to screen and battery cover. However like most things there are compromises; if you have a very large diameter lens it won't work (this didn't affect me), it does restrict access to the lens release button and it certainly would be a struggle changing lenses with gloves or cold fat fingers. Finally when fitted it does make the camera body shape bigger and I found it a struggle fitting with the size of my camera bag (this may or may not be an issue)

I did like the alternative thinking but ultimately I did sell it. Hope you find something that works for your requirements

Yes, Benro do something similar.

I have enjoyed the ease of changing orientation on the 5d with that L bracket, although finding one for the R5 is provng to be a little more challenging.

I'm going to drop 3 Legged Thing message after lunch to see if they have anything. They have 2 generic ones that might do the job (Ellie and Lexie, both short), we'll see.

So far, the Smallrig one seems to be about the most suitable one.

CAn not quite tell from the web pics if it is Arca Swiss compatible ?
I think it is from memory but I added the Falcam plate to use with their QR system and I think you might have to buy an arca plate for the upright arm . This video seems to confirm it - it is in German but you can use auto translate on the captions ...or you may be fluent in German !

I might get a 64GB UHS-II as it is Prime day
Do you know if camera like the R5, R5ii, R6ii etc can use SD cards as I am pretty sure they have CF-Express cards ! ?
My R6 can use SD cards and the R5 I had on test had a SD slot but came with a CF Express card. I’m not sure about the new models but I expect they still accept SD cards. The Canon websites will tell you. Given the files sizes of the R5ii a CF Express card is likely to be recommended.

The R6ii specs state;

Dual UHS-II SD card slots - Back up photos as you shoot, or capture different media to different cards.

Back up, that's what I was thinking of doing by having a large capacity card in slot B for copy of slot A.
Though I have been pondering for a while to buy a UHS-II V60 for a while now for fast burst, and 4k video use.
I do not know if the extra cost over the slight increase in speed matters that much, ie UHS-I v30 200mbs, UHS-II V60 280mbs !

The big advantage of faster cards to me at least is the download speed onto my computer. I do motorsport and rairly even on V30 sandiscs have I ever hit the buffer with my R5 let alone my R6 mk2

Those are read speeds - typically ⅓-½ of the write speed. UHS-II v90 are up to 300MB/s write.

Is the card worth the investment ! !
Also I do wish to spend money on a card if it is not future proof !
If the SD card can be used in future Canon camera bodies then I will get one.

I still own a 7Dii which uses CF ( Compact Flash ) and there are no modern camera ( that I know off ) use these cards. Fortunately I never invested a large amount of money on top cards. I most purchased used card from 8GB to 32GB, and though I have a handful of these cards I did spend that much on them.....

I bought :

Integral 64GB UHS-II SD Card V90 Up to 300MBs Read and 280MBs Write Speed 1866X SDHC Professional High Speed Memory Card

from an Amazon offer last year mainly for the pre burst feature of the R7. I rarely use pre burst as I find it a pain to extract the images. I also don’t really need the fast burst mode, so I’m not planning on buying another one in the near future. It only cost £38 so I thought it was worth a try.

Not really something I can tell you - from my point of view the fact that I can squirt off 40 frames in a second (for more than a second) has netted me enough keepers that I'd (statistically) missed if I'd only been able to shoot 20 before buffering.

Conversely it's a pain in the hole to cull 78 shots from 80 I just took in 2 seconds.

paradoxically i'm finding it quicker to cull with more frames - maybe because it gives you more chance to get the perfect frame?

What I had drilled into me when shooting weddings ‘edit in’.

I still do the same, P to pick a frame I like, then move on and if there’s a slightly better version select that one and deselect the previous. It’s really quick.

Sadly making selections is utter pants on the IPad Lightroom app, and given making selections is the core function of LR that’s very sad.

I actually like the look of that but I have a problem with wrist straps, I can’t hang the camera purely from the cuff, and if I grip it whilst walking about, eventually the camera coating will deteriorate

Maybe the PD capture clip is what I need

Probably a question for Dale. I finally gave in and bought a used Canon 100-400 L IS ii. I was tempted by the R 100-500 L IS but the price is almost double. The used prices for the 100-400 L IS ii are very low for such a good lens, but I am not complaining.

Any tips for using it on a R7 with and without a 1.4 extender for bird photography.

I'm using the same lens on my R7 and have set up the camera based on these settings

I currently shoot in Fv mode setting Shutter Speed and Aperture then letting the ISO float. The benefit imo to Fv is you can still quickly adjust exposure compensation on this mode.
Enjoy your new lens

I'm sorry Steve, only just seen this.

I love my 100-400mkii on the R7 ..... and now on the R5ii as well. I use the 1.4xTCiii though but even so, I find the detail that combo on the R7 renders is staggering. I would imagine it might be even better without the TC but in all honesty, I find even with the TC, it's very good, I don't really see any difference to without the TC. The aperture is f8 max with the TC but I'm usually at f8 anyway.

Manual mode for me, although if the light is changing, I may switch to AV. I use animal eye tracking, I don't mind pushing the ISO to 3200, (even 6400) at times, with a decent exposure, it's not all that noisy and cleans up well in post. If you nail exposure and focus in camera, you will be able to extract incredible detail in post.

I always use 'Servo' to cover off any movement, all the usual stuff really.

The R7 loves good light and with the 100-400 on, it just comes alive in good light.

I can't really suggest a specific way of using the lens, just bolt it on and enjoy it, get your settings right and nail the focus and exposure for birds. IS off for tripod use, but on for handheld in lens and in body. As said, just use it, there's nothing like getting used to the combo, you will find your feet and methods with it, I'm sure you will love it. Good luck and enjoy.

I've not really used the 100-400 much on thr R5ii yet but intial impressions are that that too is going to blow me away when I can get to use it properly.

Well. I've got the strap I wanted for the R5 now, I also got 6 of the anchors, so I can use the strap on my other 3 cameras until I get one or 2 more straps, although there isn't really a need to. I'm thinking about my next 2 potential purchases.

One I think will be the SmallRig L bracket, or possibly the 3 Legged Thing Roxie but I will have to look into those 2 abit more before deciding.

We had a studio tutorial night at our club on Monday and an issue arose for me with the R5 and that's to do with flash/lighting. To be fair, the trigger at club seemed to work fine on the R5 but I didn't have a chance to give it a decent go as we were having to take turns with it and time was limited to about 5 minutes at a time, so I didn't have time to dig into settings and/or caveats. The trigger used was an older one but still fairly recent, geared more to the old hotshoe type as found on DSLRs. It did trigger the lights though on the R5.

Just wondering about the R5's hotshoe, I'm guessing it needs newer type triggers/speedlights, like the E-L5?

I too have a EF 100-400L Mkii which I use on my R7, and the results are very good. A friend of mind has a R5, and RF 100-500L which he enjoys. Though the 100-500 is slightly quicker on AF, and lighter than the 100-400L Mkii I do not believe over double the cost is worth the slight advantages.

My go to lens for almost everything is canon EF 70-300L f4-5.6 IS USM which is a small compact lens that is very sharp. Though perhaps a little short on focal length for small bird wildlife it is great for everything else. It is compact enough to fit is a bum bag, jacket pocket, and though good for taking on holiday.

Many thanks for the detailed response. I have had the lens for a few days but the weather has been terrible so not yet tested. I’ll probably keep the Sigma 150-600.

I seem to remember that the hotshoe on the R5 is not compatible with all accessories. A quick Google search found a Canon post:

Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1. Others on the forum will be better placed to help

Random one.

Does anyone know the product code (and where to source) a new rubber eye cap for my R5? JJC ones amongst others for the R5 mk2 on amazon but I can't find anything UK based for the R5....

This will probably explain better typical settings from my hide (today). I was in AV mode as the light was changeable but I'd normally try to be in Manual.

Oh .... keep the 150-600, I kept mine, it's a far better lens than the £500-£600 you'd get for it used.
