Canon EOS 7D Owners Thread

Yes indeed, thanks. Definitely helped to get my head around the basics and the rest seems a little less daunting now.

iv had my 7d for two weeks now. i got the 70-300 L is usm to go with it.
it replaces a 450d and a 70-300 is usm and i have to say the diference in performace between the two set ups very noticeable. focusing is spot on and the usm in the L's so much better. expensive but worth it i think

Not alot of activity in here, is that a good thing as no one has problems or bad as not many use them?

Just bought my self a 7D upgrading from a 500D, first outing is tomorrow :)

The camera has been out for two years - I bought mine on 02/11/09 - and this thread is itself approaching a year old. If there was anything to say it has probably been said already, many times over. Do not take it as a bad sign that this thread is quiet.

I also upgraded from the 500d to the 7d;) Enjoy tomorrows shoot :-)

Quick question - I had my 7D flash "red" when it got focus.. and then turned it off (so it doesn't flash the focus point when focus is gained).. how do i turn it on again?

Custom Function 3/8 and enable VF illumination.

Hi,
Just took the plunge and moved to Canon from a Sony/Minolta set up.

My choice, a 7D with the 15-85 lens...
Should arrive within the week.

now to save for a 100-400L and a macro lens tbd... :)

I am tempted to grab one of these, mainly for the FPS, AF and somewhat larger buffer when shooting running events.

Currently using a 500d and get frustrated by missing shots due to getting a little too trigger happy.

I guess the difference will be very noticeable?

I love my 7D and am happy with it while I wait for the MKIII or better ;-)

However, I took about 20 fast but single shots on the weekend, then looked down to see a card write error and none of them had saved.

Has anyone seen this before on sandisk? Is it likely to be the card or the cam? It wasn't even in continuous mode and is a little worrying.

I've never had that problem, but I would expect it is far more likely to be a problem with the card than the camera.

Well I've finally emptied my bank account and ordered a 7D from Warehouse Express. Should here tomorrow and came with the BG-E7 battery grip, for free!

Ordered a 50mm 1.8 as well from Amazon. I can't wait to finish work tomorrow and dive into the manual while the battery charges!

There was a problem with Sandisc and 7d but it was a while back and they seemed to have sorted the problem with upgrading the software. Check the software on yours against Cannons latest updates in case yours needs updating.
Its quite easy to do even I managed it Lol

Yep, mine did it with a Sandisk card, a software update fixed it.

Hi Alan,

I have too a 7D. The battery life is really good. Definitely a day's worth, and with a spare or two, you don't really need a grip for the battery. The grip does offer better grip though, for portrait shooting, and the extra buttons, but I haven't found the need to pay a large sum for these small advantages. Also, the added bulk makes it trickier to stow.

Lens I use the most? Canon's 100mm macro (L series). Expensive, but really sharp. I also use the Sigma 50mm macro, which I like, but for the bokeh, which isn't the most attractive.

Best wishes,
Dayve

Same gear as I have and it's never disappointed me! :)

Bought one over the weekend and, while it is probably OTT for my humble needs, it is a corker of a camera.

Paired with a 70-200L F4, Tamron 17-50 and a 50mm it seems great.

Welcome to the 7D club - it's a nice place! :-). I bought mine last week as a second body to complement my 5D mkII and I have to say I'm impressed. Spend time setting it up right and getting the most out of the custom functions and it will pay dividends.

Just un-boxed mine. Battery charging so it's manual time!!

Is there any particular custom settings that are a must have or is it just a case of whatever suits me and my style of shooting?

I'm gonna give back button focusing a try as well, I've heard it's much better than using the shutter button.

Cheers Simon - Ooo I bet that is a peach of a lens/camera combination

Mine is virtually all set up now, just a little bit of tinkering to complete. got in late again so not much to take descent pics of, looking forward to the weekend now for a days outing :)

It's perfect for walk around and every day use, hardly ever comes off it !

I bet it is... and Doesn't - I purchased a 15-85 a couple of months ago which I really like, but would love to upgrade it to the 24-105 :)

TBH, unless you prefer the focal range of the 24-105, I wouldn't bother. The 15-85 is a great lens and does very, very well against the L lenses that we have here that cover the same focal length (17-40/24-105).
