Calling all Sony Alpha users! (Part 5)

I'm afraid not. The offer is only in-store and isn't mentioned on the website. I spotted it by chance when I popped in to pick up a 50/1.8. The branch only had the "demo copy" of the 85 and when the guy checked other London branches they all showed as having one copy only.

cheers john..will ring my local store and see if they have one in stock.

Well I've had the 50mm (albeit the f1.4) for ove three years and, although I absolutely love it, it can be a bit long on the crop so I have finally ordered a Sigma 30mm f1.4 which is being delivered on Friday. My 1st new lens in 2 1/2 years!!!

How are you getting on with this lens fabs?Think it will be my next lens that I purchase to go with my Sigma 85mm.

Well, it arrived last Friday and so far, I've taken a photo of the new shed that the missus wants to put on Facebook.

That said, I know it's sharp.

Off to Tuscany in tree weeks so it will get a workout there.

New Sony A77 vid.

Short but sweet. Still, it's nice to see the size of the a77 in the hand. Looks like the a700 users who were worried they'd get a smaller a33/55 sized body will be happy.

Looks nice. I do like the feel of the alpha bodies in the hand. Trouble is whenever I go into camera shops they always seem really keen to steer me onto the more usual suspects of canon/nikon. I owner if their margins are worse on Sony kit?

I don't know. And there is a bigger probability they'll have canikon themselves so will naturally steer you into the "I've got one of these so it's the best choice" regardless of whether it is the best choice for you or not.

Canon/Nikon equivalents are generally more expensive than their sony counterparts so they may make more actual profit but a smaller percentage than sony. Without knowing what the trade prices are for each model it would be hard to tell.

It's interesting it's that size considering the A55/A33 size...

I wonder what new tech they've shoehorned into the VF...

Don't know about the UK but Thom Hogan says that Sony margins for a retailer in the US are significantly higher than on Nikon.
It's probably habit/thinking easier sale as more come in asking for CaNikon.
Don't know if it still goes on but Canon at least used to incentivise store sales people.

I think that Gustav on Dyxum (who seems to be in the loop with Sony as a tester for Alpha) thought that availability in Europe would be end of Sept./early October - so Octoberish seems a fair guess.
They have to ensure that they have it out for the Xmas sales period.

Has anyone seen the Nex-5 with 18-55mm lens on Dabs for £350 (after cashback)?

Got to say I'm tempted to sell my Canon S90 and get this but have the feeling i'll be buying out of date stock when the Nex-5N is on the way though I see no prices. The Nex-7 looks awesome but i'm guessing around £800 for that body only....

What f2.8 zoom lenses are people using daily? I'm looking to change up my sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 on my a700 to a fixed 2.8 but not sure what one to go for. I'm kinda leaning towards the tamron as it's had very good reviews.

Sony are meant to be announcing a new 16-50/2.8 SSM on the 24th but I imagine that it will be £600+.
Below that cost the Tamron 17-50/2.8 seems to find favour over the Sigma.

i am looking for a 17-70 if your flogging that ?

I went for the Tamron, love the lens.

Reasons I didnt go for Sigma was apparently gears might strip on A700, and also apparently could have compatibility issues with sonys new SLT cameras.

Loads of people have the Sigma and have no problems, but I was happy to go with the Tamron

plenty of chat - just in other threads.;)

The 16-50/2.8 as part of a kit adds £500.

It's funny how the a77 has diverged from the design of the a55/a580 and gone back to a design that looks a lot like the a100. My two cents!

Over on DPR people were complaining that it looks too much like a Canon. Not much Minolta DNA in those rounded shoulders.

Frankly I couldn't give a monkey's what my camera looks like.

Is it true (or is this just urban mythology), that cramming too many megapixels into a smaller sensor is a bad idea? The only reason I ask, is because the new a77 has a 24.3MP APS-C sensor. Obviously the full frame cameras are matching this, but have Sony stolen a march over the other manufacturers?

The Sony sensors of late seem to be very good the 16mp one in the A55 and Pentax K5 looks awesome, so while I seem to remember there being some criticism of I think a Canon 18mp sensor a year or two back Sony seem to be very good at making sensors.

There is a rule for the optimum number of pixels. I've read loads of these threads and it seems to be that the very maximum you can squeeze onto a sensor is whatever the poster of the opinion is currently using! Any more would be madness. ;-)

If they do make it work (particularly at high ISO - 6400 and above), then other manufacturers will be playing catch up.
I know what you are saying John, nobody likes to see a quantum leap in technology just after you have shelled out for the latest, state of the art camera :)

Just a heads up to people, gonna be selling when i get chance most of my lenses. Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5, Sigma 70-300 APO f4-5.6 or a Minolta 70-210 f3.5-4.5, Minolta 35-105 and a Sony 18-50 kit lens.

Its probably going to be the tamron 17-50 f2.8, i dont think i can afford the Sigma version as its about 200 quid more. Or is it worth the extra money?

For that sort of money it's probably going to be in the new Sony 16-50 f2.8 range. Maybe i should wait a little before selling up.

I do love the 17-70 i got from you tho mark, it lives on my camera and the minimum focus distance is awesome, can pretty much touch the object and still focus but could really do with the extra stop sometimes.

I have just received a new "pressie" form our postman today, a recent buy from EBay. I now own a Minolta Dynax 7000i, with a very nice 35 - 105 lens, 55mm filters including a polariser, a used but good Lowepro bag, and the interesting item which I want to ask a question about - a Minolta 3200i flash.
The whole lot came to £34 including postage, and the lens alone has to be worth that.
Will the flash work on my a700, because although I have done some searches, there are conflicting answers. Some people say that it will work at full power only, but could be used remotely or on a bracket. Nobody has mentioned damage to the camera electrics.

Andy

Urban myth.

If you pixel peep at 100% it looks like there is more noise with the higher MP sensor as you have more noisy pixels however the total amount of noise in the image does not change. What you get is finer grained noise from the smaller pixels which actually produces better results with NR algorithms.

I've got one. I've read reports of poor QC with these, but I've never had any issues with mine. It's not in the same class as the more expensive CZ lenses, but it makes a very good walkaround/travel lens. Aside from the longer reach, it beats my kit lenses on sharpness, contrast and flare control.

If you tend to do your walking around in lower light, the Tamron 17-50/2.8 would be the main alternative.
