Calling all Sony Alpha users! (Part 5)

well,my insurance just rang back, and they are going to supply me with the sigma 24-70 2.8 instead of the 18-50,and when i asked about the a900 instead of the a850,they said i could have that insteaed,at no extra cost...am i happy or what :D

Result!

I had a similar (happy) experience when we had a break in and a couple of Minolta 5000's I had (from body+lens bundles) were taken.
They apologised for not being able to supply a film SLR, would I accept an A350? Feeling cheeky, I asked if they meant 2 A350, as 2 bodies had been stolen, they said yes. So I asked if I could have 1 A700 instead of 2 A350, again with the right result.

i have to say i was speechless...couldn't quite believe what i was hearing, but more than happy to hear those wonderful words...it's going to kill me having to wait for it all to turn up though :D

Is it that far out from what canon charge for their 300/2.8 ?

The thing is i have the 300f2.8 is L and the 500f4isL so if i can just fit these to an a77 it would make sence ,to carry the above and another 500 f4 by sony well i would need a truck lol

You can get adapters and the best place to find them is Ebay. Due to the registration differences between the mounts the adapters have a lens to enable focus to infinity and this degrades the image quality somewhat.

thanks for that mm i dont like the idea of degrading the image though..

Just found out Canon are showing new gear on the 3rd november so any thought of the a77 will have to waite just in case they have a mirrowless camera (side note ) Nikon have just brought one out too.
Rob.

Just put my Sony A77 on order with the lens Total of £1384!!

Go to Sony and they have the A77 for £959 or with the lens as above if you select to order from the Enfield store.

Expect me to put up the CZ 16-80mm and Sony 16-105mm shortly

hi all, sometimes when i focus on a subject and then look at the photo its focused somewhere else.
i have it on spot whats going on ?? should i be using wide ??
i fire the shutter when the red box is where i want it but it seems to move like from someones face to the shoulder

Depends. If you are using spot and the area you are focussing doesn't contain something of sufficient contrast then it will struggle and may focus elsewhere. I'd try centre point instead and see whether that is better. Also if you use continuous focus rather than single shot when you half press the shutter it will still carry on re-focussing which could be another reason it's gone off. If you are using a very shallow depth of field then any movement by you will throw the focus off.

Front or back focussing is generally due to user error.

But as OP said, the red box is appearing so it should be focussing correctly. Try setting up a test with a sheet of text, first focus to infinity then focus on the text then from minimum focus distance to the text. try it a couple of times to make sure and see what results you get.

I had confirmed issues with my a500 and my tamron 17-50mm both working fine now.

As a quick test, try this:

Tape a bank note to the wall, getting it as flat as possible. Put the camera on a tripod and switch off SSS. Set to the lens' widest aperture. Take a picture using AF (centre point) and then one using MF (use mf zoom to be sure you've got it spot on).

If the two images are the same, then your cam and lens are perfectly calibrated. If the MF shot is sharper, then either the lens or body (or both combined) have an issue with the calibration of AF (what's generally known as front or back focussing).

Just for information, photographing UK banknotes without specific permission from the Bank of England is illegal (part of the legislation on forgeries and counterfeiting).

What ever happened to Puddleduck? No activity since January yet he was a stalwart of this board. Hope he is ok.

I'd thought he decided no longer to visit once his classified access was revoked cause he was trading without an account

Which 24-70? The CZ?

If so, you'll love it. It's just about as good as it gets for "standard" zooms.

Lucky lucky you!

Maybe some better footwear is in order to stop you falling with it? lol.

there was nothing wrong with the footware, only the person wearing them..lol

gonna have to stick with the sigma 24-70 for a while, and if i don't like..i'll get rid and try something else...

unfortunately, not the CZ 24-70..but the sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX DG macro...

Hi

Do any of you use the hand strap (the one which fits to the tripod mount) and if so how do you find it and does it leave enough thread still to enable you to mount a tripod?

Also the neck strap that Sony provide is cr*p and gives me neck ache - any suggestions on a good replacement?

Cheers :)

What you could do with the strap is to attach one of those padded seatbelt doofers you can get. Would make the strap more comfortable without faffing around getting another. I like lowpro ones but I'm not sure they make them with the right ends as you need the folded fabric rather than the metal hook.

I use an optech strap...very comfortable indeed, and can highly recommend them.

I use both the 'normal' Op/Tech strap and also the Op/Tech 'Dual harness' - the former if I'm just taking a few shots, the latter if I'm carrying the camera for any length of time.

The Dual harness shifts the weight from your neck to your shoulders, and so is far more comfortable over a longer period.

yay..my a900,24-70 and sony vertical grip arrived today..and can only say wow...that OVF is so big and bright...i can see this all getting very expensive in my pursuit of full frame lens to do the a900 justice
Congratulations Stan, it's a fantastic camera, now nip over to the classifieds and buy my 85mm if you've any funds left lol :D

is there any way of makin an a200 blue tooth compatible?

Nikon & Canon will have to release something as they're going to both look a bit silly if you can get an FF Pro camera with 50% more resolution for half the money from Sony...especially if sony fill the gaps in the lens line ups.

How's the A77?

well..here she is..my a900 with vertical grip,plus sigma 105 and HVL-F58AM attached :D

Hi

Looking for some help!

I'm thinking about buying the Tamron 70-300mm. Heard good things about it....and it's cheap!

Any one got any thoughts on IQ etc and what the focus speed is like?

I've got the A33 so hoping that the 7fps will work nicely with it.

Thanks in advance for any help/reviews/test shots :)

Hi does anyone on here use the Sony 24-105 f3.5-4.5 lens, just I have been offered one and wondered if this lens is better iq than my 18-70 kit lens. Any advice welcome thanks Johnjess

Should be. Just about anything is better than than the 18-70 unfortunately. The 18-55 newer kit lens is much better than the 18-70 was. Depends whether you'd miss the wide end too as on a crop that 24 is 36mm in old speak so getting narrower.

Should be sample pics on dyxum of both to compare them.

i didnt like 28mm min and sold my 28-75 to get the tamron 17-50, as a walkabout lens it didnt quite cut it for me.

It is def better then Kit lens but I sold the SOny 24-105 cos it wasnt wide enough for me, now I got siggy 17-70 and pretty happy with it.

All, need some advice.

I will be changing all my kit up in the next few months but not sure what to go with.

I will be gettin a wide angle, either sigma 10-20 or tamron 10-24.

Now if i go with the tamron is it worth going for the 24-70 f2.8 to give a full range up to 70mm or go with the overlap of 17-50 f2.8?

Im not sure if when using the 24-70 would be wide enough if i only have one lens when i go away or something.

Thanks.
