Apparently it seems that way. The only other thing is a shorter battery life and is slightly lighter. The camera bodys look 100% identical.

hmm.. I would definitely go for a33 then.

p.s. Mike.P - I have 2 lenses here in the thread for sale, they seem to be pentax , but that's all i know ! :(

Kinda tempted by these A33/A55 cameras now :p I reckon my chunky 16-105mm would look pretty cool on it :p

no ! it won't !
I think the killer lens on the a33 would be a 35mm prime or something wider. small nifty beast ! :)

Indeed. I reckon my 28mm Minolta Prime would be right at home on there! It's perfect on my A200 as well but felt a bit stupid on the A700. I still think it'd be cool to have a massive chunky lens on such a dinky body though :p

analog to leather pants ! the same coolness ! :D

To be honest I think my next upgrade may be something like that. A high performance camera in a small package (no bigger than my A200) as the reason I didn't get on too well with the A700 was because of the extra size of it and is the reason I went back to the A200.

In other news, hopefully receiving my Sony 11-18mm tomorrow, looking forward to trying it out!

posted this morning,so will be with you by 1pm tomorrow

I read somewhere else that the 33/55 have 30% light loss due to the translucent mirror.

just charging batteries then il be doing a 50mm f1.4 sony and 50mm f1.7 minolta test.

any ideas on what to do?

ouch, then again its new and people will have money burning a hole.

I know I posted the news earlier today but I'm actually completely dis-interested in these - video doesn't interest me, Liveview doesn't, and EVF don't.

I know I'm a bit of a traditionalist, but I really don't think Sony are aiming at the semi-Pro market (ie A700 / A850 / A900) anymore.

I do quite like the look of the size vs the A500 but thats about it!

I am just quoting the prices that Jessops and Warehouse Express have for these cameras for pre order?

A55 £749
A33 £649

I can see sony aiming more for the low to mid end probably because there is much more money there as unless you are pro, serious amateur or someone with bottomless pockets £1500+ is a lot to spend on the 850/900 end of the market.

Personally i dont care for the 33/55 as i hate EVF's but it would have been nice to see the swivel screen on say the 580.
I've been wanting to upgrade for a few months now from my 300 and had a 700 lined up but the very sudden unexpected death of my MIL a few months back left us with a big wedge to find to put towards funeral costs hence no upgrade.

I think i'll wait so see the new 7** before i upgrade to decide between that and the 580.

That isn't likely before 2011.

It HAS to have an optical viewfinder, as no one looking for a A700 upgrade would touch it otherwise.

The A700 replacement is so long in coming it would not surprise me if it never does.

Haven't tried that one in particular, I use the official one on my A450, the official one for the A200 isn't that much more expensive than the one you bought.

I just wanted to say "Thanks " to Broken Hope for this link.

Been after a screen protector for my A200 and after reading this thread I ordered one from the above link.
Came today.... very pleased.

Many thanks.

guys !

MD lenses with adaptor feels good on sony or doesn't . how's the IQ etc. I'm after some cheap primes again. and there is one auction finishing soon

+ it looks like I would need an adaptor with a glass to be able to focus to infinity ?

the lens in question is 50mm f1.7 md

To be honest I was planning on getting the 35mm f1.8 and 85mm f2.8 at Christmas and then get an a550 body but I might wait until I can afford the a55 which might make a good lens selection; Sony a55 (battery grip if available), 35mm f1.8, 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f2.8 would suit me perfectly happy.

can someone explain to me why they need a mirror (translucent) for the new alpha-55 and 33 if they are using an evf instead of an optical viewfinder?

focusing?

Correct, The phase detection focus sensors are mounted in the top of the mirror box (where the pentaprism/pentamirror should live for an ovf) instead of in the bottom off the camera. So the light/image path which would be used for an ovf is directed into the sensors from the mirror.

HTH

I see.. so the big improvement with these cameras is that they can use phase detect focus while in live view..? (compared to contrast detect focus on other SLRs..)

Thanks

seems like I've won. paid .
lol, the guy is from city about 20miles away, and he's sending the lens via RMSD .

any of you chaps have a spare MD/MA adapter or old MD minolta film camera ? apart from ambermiles monstrous x700 .

test possibly coming tomorrow, got called into work today so couldnt do!

a few questions, has anyone got an official battery grip for the a850 or a900? has anyone tried a third party one?

oh and where is good for batteries, i dont mind third party as thats what i used in my canon 5d and never had a problem!

Phottix "Titan" work well (Ebay)

I hate grips.. I have one infesting my A200 (which I took off last night ), so I can't really comment apart from to say that I always feel the need to use --> :gag: when the word "grip" is mentioned. And I only reserve :gag: for "video" normally! Sorry I'm not really helping :D

There is often very little difference between 3rd party and official. I think the A900 3rd party grip is missing a few bits vs the official Sony one.

yeah ! got the same disease. bought a Meike one for a200 and I think it's overrated although much easier to do portraits.
I wouldn't buy a 3rd party for a FF sony, too risky I think.

Maybe I'll get used to the grip. will give it some time as I've just got it basically.

Andy - what are your views on 50mm f1.7 MD ? I hope mine will be delivered soon. Won the auction, to feed my camera gear buying addiction :D

at least it looks good. I just had to bid on something yesterday ! a total addiction.

I'll wait, maybe somebody has an adapter I could buy from here, if not I guess I'll get one of those adapters that don't allow to focus till infinity but instead get a bit better macro .

I just took deliverey of a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 HSM. This is now the 4th I've had (two in Nikon and two in Sony) and all 4 have totally sucked.

This is the so-called "IQ" (I use the word image quality in italics)

http://www.andydrakeimages.co.uk/Sig2470/DSC00516.JPG

Bloody hell. That's a bad Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, 100-300 f/4 and this in the space of six weeks :(

is it better at 50mm ?
and could it be the a900 ?
So many people rave about the hsm version. but this doesn't look good at all.

have you compared it to zeiss at f8 ?
I take my words back, that you don't need that big of a sharpness - as you're a landscape tog.

My A900 is spot on with focus, got several f/1.4 lenses and all are spot on.

I didn't try it at 50mm. The last 4 24-70 have all been awful at 70mm wide open. (I've had two bad ones in Nikon fit as well)

So in the last 6 weeks I've got 3 Sigma lenses, 70-200 f/2.8 sucked (showed crops in this threas), 100-300 f/4 sucked (got a refund last week, crops on Dyxum) and now this.

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 HSM is absolutely spot on and perfect, so its only a 75% bad strike rate ;)

blimey !

I thought that the HSM is going to be like a dream :(

You can probably find a post from me slagging off the HSM version in Nikon fit about 12 months ago.

I try one every six months, and they all perform the same (on different bodies and different systems) and all totally suck at 70mm wide open :gag::nuts:

It's nice that you don't give up on Sigma ! :D

I wonder which one is going to be your lucky number.

p.s. what do people think of Rokkor lenses ? is it pointless to buy them ? can they be super sharp ? don't want to end up selling one again, like i did with 2x 135mm f2.8 m42 (not my every day focal length)
basically I want to get a really good 50mm to use on film camera for portraits

It's nice that you don't give up on Sigma ! :D

I think 4 is my limit. I'll report the serial number and findings to Sigma UK - they are quite used to hearing from me lately

First 24-70 HSM I told them about Gary there told me to send it back for a refund - I had to admire their honesty on that one
