Yes
Scarey stuff.
My daughter lives in Sydney, and works close to the cafe. Fortunately she's over here for Christmas.

Very fortunate (y) I can see this causing a lot of places to see heightened security
I know what you mean. They're not sure yet if it's someone acting on their own, or part of something bigger.
My daughter said there were 11 people arrested recently who were apparently planning some sort of "incident" in the same area.

Only caught a few snippets on the radio but the act of terror / not an act of terror did seem strange.

Apparently he's asked for a new Islamic flag ... seems he brought the wrong one without realising!

the Australian SAS have stormed the cafe. Serious gunfire and a couple of explosions.
Not sure if the gunman has been killed, but a couple of stretchers coming out of the cafe.
Looks like has was ready to start killing some hostages.

Epic fail here for the australian legal system, to have someone facing 47 counts of sexual offences out on bail.

Certainly didn't hold back on the bullets there did they?

I would imagine so.

Well that was fast and very loud...the way it needed to be done though, talk of approx 5 injured, hopefully only not seriously I dare say there is one that is very seriously injured with a cause of death being lead poisoning ;) hopefully this was just a lone nutter and not an indication of future tactics q

The problem with lone nutters is they're hard to police/keep track of.
This guy was well known to the police, and look at the damage he's caused.

Indeed, it's never going to be easy, this is what in this country MI5/6 are there for with the helps of the likes GCHQ etc

Sad that one dead, but that needed to be done.
Didn't seem like a planned storm, so I'm wondering if the nutter fired the first shots, maybe the one dead is from him.

The Aussies lived up to thier reputation of getting the job done though, well done to the police/army who got in there and did what needed to be done before more got killed.

Not sure they much help with the likes of the Rigby nutters...

Your right you they're never going to be a panacea to all evils however part of the reason for that is that the laws of this country do require a certain level of criminal activity before positive action can be taken

Of course not, my point is that lone, or even pairs of nutters are the hardest to predict, even with some intelligence and I doubt the Australian equivalent of MI5/6 is any better or worse than our own. ;)

Agreed. No tolerance with these evil f***ers.

The Aussie Security Services are as good as ours are, and subject to the same restrictions in terms of resources & powers. They really are no where near as powerful as some think.
In this blokes case, I doubt that any intelligence would have been there to stop him anyway. It's an easy self motivated act and if that plan only exists in his head, no one's going to get wind of it.
His criminal past, well, like here bail is a right, and unless there's good reason, and those are defined in law, it's just not possible to keep someone banged up, no matter how much they should be.

The Aussie security services did a good job. Tragic about innocent people being killed or injured, but it would have taken a miracle to avoid it. The casualties are 100% the responsibility of the headbanger.

Who knows, it might have been better if the final assault had been planned instead of having to respond immediately to the commendable and brave Tori Johnson trying to wrestle away Monis' gun!

But full marks and all respect to the memory of that young man!

Pretty sure though that being held in custody pending trieal for the crimes he had already allegedly committed would have stopped him.
Yes, like here, bail is a right; but it's not unusual for it to be denied given the nature, and number, of charges already made against him.
The system failed.
Had he been in custody these people would still be alive.

If Henry the 8th hadn't married that tart Anne Boleyn, we'd all be Catholic.

The problem is that it's oh so easy to be wise after the event, but if the charges were such that bail couldn't be refused, it can't be. Thats not your decision to make with hindsight, it's a decision the Magistrate had to make with the evidence he had in front of him. He made it, thats that. You don't have the evidence to second guess that decision, nor do I. So harping on about 'what if', isn't helpful or useful.

But why stop there?
If the Australian Immigration Service hadn't let him in, they'd still be alive.
If he wasn't an a******e, they'd still be alive.
If his mother had had a headache they'd still be alive.

They aren't alive, it happened so stop looking for something else to blame.

Incidentally....Did I miss the memo stating your opinion is now the only one to be posted?

Although if the apple didn't fall far from the tree, his father would probably have raped her anyway...

Tragic about the 2 innocents' deaths and even more so about the Peshawar killings.
