Bob's attempt at 52 week 27 Art OoF but i still love it

Neat idea.
I like the fact you've got some good words on the board, really held my attention. You're getting quite good at this aren't you ?

Nice colours and composition too.

Hi BOB:D

Sorry it's been a long time since I first commented. You have shown a big improvement week by week, your first shots were little more than snap shots but by chopped you are starting to get a lot better results. The final processing with the street shot works well, it was a shame about the map cutting across the leg. The Play shot is well thought out carrying the photographic theme in the words.

A good shot, good dof and pretty well lit.
I like the added interest of the words

Well done Bob,

Well thought out. Improving all the time.

Bob, that's worked very nicely. The colours are good and strong, a clean simple image. Shame about the Y not in your hand though ;)
thanks :)

cool shot, Scrabble is another one of my major time consumers, pity you didn't get photograph on the triple for 63 points!!!
I am rubbish at scrabble in fact I made dh go in the attic to find his borad we play it that much !!!
bah yeah i know didnt think to start photo further over but the way it is if you have "er" you'll get the triple word !!!!!

Neat idea.

yeah as I said I didnt notice that until I looked at it at home else I would have taken another
Its great that you have had a look and can see an improvement !! I really appreciate your comments! :)

Wow! You've really raised the bar this week.
You can see how much thought you've put into the composition of this and it's paid off.
You've got a lovely clean background and the time spent arranging the board has worked brilliantly. I like the angle, I like the colours and I like your choice of words for the game.

I think you've done well with the lighting too. You've managed to keep the shadows from becoming too distracting and that bit of reflection at the top of the board actually adds a nice touch to the overall image.

oh wow thanks for that the lighting is my cooker hood !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good idea, I think maybe a little more light on the bottom left.
Personally I would have spelt one of the words wrong to see how many people pick up on it.

although this isnt a great shot it is infact the first manual shot that I am submitting for the 52 !!! a real achievemnt for me
chemical.jpg

Looks good and well done for taking it to manual. You'll learn lots and have more control  You've not done badly here at all. The colours are bright on the charts and the viles are well lit and the coloured shadows are nice. Just a tad bright in the bottom left, but good effort :)

Well done for your first shot in manual
I can't believe how much your photography has come on since you posted your week 1 image!
And I really do like this a lot.

Lovely bright colours and nicely exposed. It almost looks like a product shot from a fish magazine but those translucent colour accents in the shadows give it an "arty" edge which works really well.
It looks like you've really cracked those clean white backgrounds too.

The only thing I'd consider changing would be to give it a but more DoF - just to get the words on the test charts a bit sharper.

BTW I hope that you've deliberately overcooked that nitrite test ;)

am still trying to get a grip with lighting

funny about your comment about the colour accents in the shadows dh didnt like it and was trying to move the flash to get rid but I really liked them so ignored him !!!

the clean white backgrounds are from work huge cardboard sheets that get binned daily on the other side its advertising but ste pointed me in the direction of cardboard and well there we have it lol

oh and the nitrite is a calcium test (not completed) the phosphate was far too boring so thats the nitrite !!!!
have not sussed dof yet :o(

You're braver than me - tv/av all the way here ;)

It's great. The colours really pop, it's bright, nice and sharp ..... I'd be happy with it if it were mine.

Well done Bob  You've got the colours good and strong, love the colours in the shadows too. It's clearly on theme. I like it. It's been said about the front corner, but otherwise

This is quite promising but looks a bit dark on my monitor. So much detail is lost in the shadows that I wonder if it would be worth cropping it a bit. it is also slightly soft - but then the conditions look rather difficult!

Nice Chemistry shot Bob. Well done on 'exploring' Manual.

I agree with Tracer about Candid being a little dark but I do like the glow from the fire.

Do like the chemistry, just a little bright bottom left, candid is a great shot, but a tad dark like to composition and the subject

Love the chemistry shot, a little bright bottem left as mentioned above but nice composition and great colours. Manual isn't that hard really, glad you have bit the bullet and had a go.

Great candid shot to show a craftsman hard at work.

I agree that it is dark but it is a very dark room with no leccy lights and i couldnt work out how to get it lighter naturally iyswim

even the a/f shot was this dark but this is another manual shot from me !!!
so how should I have got more light in there???

Good question.

I'm still very new to photography, so was only passing as I saw your photo.

I know the idea of the theme was to capture a moment of being un-noticed, maybe a flash might of helped?

either that, or uping the white balance?

Like both images chemistry and candid, your second picture may be a little dark but could be a monitor thing, when you say how could I get more light in the image the easy way is to up the ISO speed, it would make it slightly grainer but it might have suited this picture.

the original was taken aat 44mm iso 800 1/60s-f/4.5 if that helps ?

I like this a lot.
Not quite decided with the darkness - I like the way that the scene is lit with the firelight and in a lot of ways the selectively lit areas combined with the dim surroundings work really well. However, I would like to see a little bit more detail in some of the ironwork - particularly the parts in the main focal area of the image like the chains in front of the fire.
That's always going to be difficult though because they're backlit and almost silhouetted.

It's something that could be addressed to some extent in PP. What software do you use and do you shoot in RAW?
If you have the option you could play around in shadows/highlights in a new layer and selectively bring in some more detail in the areas that need it. Shooting in RAW will give you a bit more flexibility for this type of change.

If you're set on getting it right in camera, then I think you've set yourself a tricky task here. IMO increasing the brightness of the overall shot would lose a lot of the atmosphere from the flames and that's what makes the shot for me.
And I think you've done pretty much all you can to get as much light as possible through your camera settings anyway.
I don't know what lens you're using, but at anything faster than 1/60th a second you're likely to start risking motion blur if you're handheld and I'd guess that 4.5 is probably wide open for your aperture.
I'm not familiar with your camera, so I've got no idea how it performs at ISOs above 800.

In that kind of situation I guess your only lighting option is onboard flash . . . not something I've played with much, but if that was set at very low power it may have helped things / on the other hand it may have looked awful

I prefer your water test shot than my own I think. Chemistry is a winner for me but good job that wasn't a real nitrate test

I think you may be reading my mind :suspect: I was going to use a blacksmith shot as well. That would have been too strange.

As it turned out I couldn't get a decent shot of the blacksmith at Blists Hill because there were too many people around.

On the other hand you have managed a cracking shot. Yes, it is a little dark but then again I suspect it was dark in there anyway. It adds to the atmosphere for me

was really pleased to get another manual shot feel I am getting somewhere even if its too darl iyswim
lens is Nikon AF-S DX 18-200mm F3.5-5.6G ED VR II i am next to useless in picassa so everything is normally pretty much as shot
I love the candid shot just as it is. I think the darkness gives the fire a nice glow. To use a flash would spoil the candid nature of the shot. Well done.

thanks

I liked your chemistry shot and thought jeez whats the odd's lol
I am so glad that you like MY shot of the blacksmith at Blist hill (how scary is that)
actually if it wasnt for the fact that i never let my dh touch my d90 I would be worrying that you were my Andy

I thought it was Blists Hill but couldn't be sure

This is getting stranger and stranger. Both Chemistry shots using water tests, both candids at blists Hill, both using D90s and your other half has stolen my name as well

I did notice that all the SLRs I saw today were Nikon, not one Canon ;)

Andy

thats cos nikon are the best !!!!!
see and you know how dark it is in there althoughit would have been good to compare the lighting of each if you had of got a shot
so where are you ?? telford ?

Stoke On Trent.

I have the 12 month passport ticket so expect more of my 52 to come from Ironbridge.

Some of my interior shots were dire today. My SB600 was behaving badly and each shot was about 3 stops too dark

I couldn't get bracketing to work either :( I wanted to play with HDR.

I guess I should have taken the instructions with me

we have the passport too
hmm wonder how our shots will cross then lol
instructions help  me ?? i would never use a flash backwards :bonk:

Really like this, the lighting is for me spot on. I guess it's personal taste but I would have shot this as you have and kept a majority of the detail in the shadows, that way attention is focussed on the subject rather than his surroundings.

I really like your chemistry shot Bob, the colours are great, really vibrant against the white.
Candid works as a shot but its a little too dark for me, its hard as if you expose the room more the fire will be blown, here's where you need a defused flash, or maybe even a full studio kit

The first is dark, but I think it fits as is, it's on theme, and a great shot of a craftsman at work.

I would like to produce my lovely new van for your viewing

Love your Candid shot Bob, one of my favs from the week. Lovely natural lighting and gives you a good feel for the workplace.

Think you've just used this week to show off haven't you?! haha. Its a nice purchase you have made there.

Sure the pics didnt have too much thought behind them as you were so giddy and hope the caravan lets you and your camera explore more of the world this year
