Blondie606's Photo52 2011-Wk 52 Glass & Nature,Challenge Complete

#1, I prefer the fun element of the second photograph.

#2, my immediate reaction was (sorry) that it was a lazy shot, if you know what I mean, didn't seem to be a lot off thought put into it, but it's grown on me (aarrggghhh, no pun intended!). For some reason the fact that the earring doesn't fall straight down draws my attention to it...

#3, second one...dddrrroooollll.....colour one works for me. Nice shadows/tone.

I'd like to see a bit more of the right hand side of the car (as looking at it).

Cheers.

Hiya Lynne,

I like your b&w photo of the Porsche as it seems to tone down the highlights of the colour version.

Also like the idea for your image of the motorbike, but for me I'm just not sure of the colour. It would have also looked better without the background.

Look forward to seeing what you achieve for next week's theme.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks Dawn . I've never really looked round PSE & just found the BAS relief by mistake ! Eventually I'll get the hang of it & be able to get rid of the back ground as it would look better .

Posiview - not a lazy shot at all, spent ages trying to get the bit I wanted ,maybe a macro lens would have given a better shot (someone else mentioned that) but only have my kit 18-55 lens .Did try it with my Raynox250 but then I lost the fact it was a face. However will be trying that one again .& going back to the dealer to try the car again,(hopefully they'll turn some lights off & let me move the dispay stand) & will try for more of the car r/handside in shot . I have little idea of composition , just tend to see a shot & take it so thanks for the idea:thumbs:

Hi Lynne well done on the theme think you done well think I prefer the second shot to but im not up on the technical side either but I think any views given are a help they give you different ideas.
Well done

Carl

Hey nice one like the B&W I have got CS4 had it for 2 years now and still trying
to get to grips with it.

B+W Porsche for me. Love the highlights on the bonnet. My only crit is the A4 rectangle to the left hand side of the car, my eyes keep going back to it and wanting to read it.
Otherwise superb.

Hi, Lynne, I'm glad you spend time on it, kind of embarrassed by my comments now, but hey ho, it was my gut reaction.

Cheers.

Hi Lynne!

I really like your photographs of the Porshe. To be honest i can't pick a favourite, i like them both. I particularly like the fact that the Porshe emblem is reflected in the middle of the bonnet. Nice shots :)

No worries Andy ,it's all very subjective .In truth it wasn't the shot I had in my mind:) Now all I need is a willing model ,a day off work & a macro lens to reshoot it.....

& thanks to all of who have left advice ,comments & crit ,definitately helps .
I'm learning lots, particularly that I need to take my time & concentrate more on what's in the view finder ,try harder to get it right in camera ,get to grips with PSE & get a bigger pad of paper to jot all the idea's down that I've seen on this challenge :-)

Great shot Lynne  liking the b/w car shot ;) great Idea and well taken dont think I would change a thing I like it the way it is

Hi Lynne that certainly is "style". Not sure if I prefer the colour or the B+W - I like them both. The low angle works very well, and the composition is excellent. This is a really well lit shot, and lovely sharp focus.
The background it a bit distracting, but not much you could do about that I guess.
Looking forward to your week 4.

Hi Lynne

Sorry its taken me a while to comment so far on your pics...

Pic 1... I got your logic... but when I looked at the pics... without reading the logic first... they just did not shout the theme to me... more like "explore" or something like that... the hat was a bit indiana jones!

Pic 2... I find close ups of body parts a bit scarry... I'd have maybe had a bit more DOF and focused on the ear ring... Again for me im not sure it shouted new to me on first glance!

Pic 3... The B + W car... that's a stonker of an image... nothing negative to say about it at all... you should be really happy with that... def an image you would see on a calander! Very sellable image.

Pic 4... Open... Cant wait to see it... Hope you are having great inspirational ideas!

Mark

Hi all

finally got round to sorting something having spent since sunday scratching my head for idea's:thinking:
I am just so thankful for digital as I'd have used about 3 rolls of film just playing with idea's so far . My list of things to try shooting is growing ever longer after looking at other 52er's photo's

Possibly a slightly tenuous link to open but here goes :

nana.jpg

My thought was that to eat a banana you have to "open" it (peel is probably more accurate but what the hell!)
Had a quick trip round hobbycraft for a background , some florists wire & oasis . No additional lighting . Had fun doing it & enjoyed eating it after !

Not happy with :
the shadow on it but the only extra light I had cast shadows in other area's , then again the skin would naturally cast a shadow so maybe it's ok ?
The flesh color seems to a touch grey ? This was approx the 4th shot with faffing in between so I need to get quicker...or have a bigger supply of banana's:lol:

Happy with :
The fact it seems to be floating in mid-air
The overall color of the skin .
It all seems to be in focus from tip to bottom

Learnt :
I can do something if I put my mind to it . Not usual for me to do still life type stuff but enjoyed it so will keep trying to get it right

Many thanks to all who have commented (good & bad) & given advice on my pic's so far . I think I am learning & your help is invaluable

So fire away with the good or bad comments

Lynne

I love this image! Sorta spooky kids tv in a way but so smart. I would not worry about the grey... That's t colour bananas can be... It's just real life. I love t way the banana is just looting like a ghost!

Great work!

Hiya Lynne,

I love this :D It kinda reminds me of bananas in pajamas (but then having a 6 year old son I should be forgiven for thinking like that )

I like your take on the theme, very creative. I would have perhaps peeled the banana a little bit more, perhaps midway down.

As for the shadow, you could have probs overcome that with a bit of lighting from the right. I bought an additional gooseneck halogen lamp for £6 odd the other day which works wonders as far as lighting is concerned (and a cheap option too - which can be used as a normal desk lamp, so muli-functional).

I'm not so keen on the background and would have preferred it to be totally black, with a slight crop to give a more 3D effect to the fruit.

Overall a fab interpretation of the theme, well done.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks Mark ,made me feel really happy when I saw your comments....finally managed to get it right:thumbs:

Dawn,I actually had it against a black background but had a slight shadow to the lower left area on the black card that I couldn't get rid of so did something in PSE & that was the result:eek: Quite like it but really did want to keep it plain black .I also wanted to peel the nana slightly more but getting it to stay in the right position without being able to see the supports was tricky so left it where it was .

How ever I am going to try again to try n get the result I really wanted .
Right ,sorted, picking a lamp up tonight so can try again over the weekend
thanks,Lynne

Lynne, this is a great idea, i love the fact that it seems to be floating in mid air and you have got the colour of the banana spot on. The shadow doesn't detract from the shot at all, i like it :)

Hi Lynne,
You have captured the colours and texture of the banana superbly - great shot:clap:

Nice one. As soon as I saw it I thought Magritte and his apple paining. If this link isn't allowed I'll remove.

Why did you chose to place it in the middle?

I can see a yellowish section to the left side of the banana, was you hand there?

Minor point in what is a great and imaginative take open.

Cheers.

Hi Lynne, what a fantastic shot. I really love it! That's such a spooky, yet fun effect. I like the background being totally OOF and that stange green tint adds to the weirdness.

As some else has mentioned, lemon juice does the trick when photographing fruit. I did wonder if a different position for the banana would be better, but I like the way it just hangs right in the middle.

Nice one Lynne, my first thoughts were how did she manage to shoot that in mid air. Dont think the shadow detracts from the "open banana" at all and the colours and texture look fab. Like you i not a still life person, however i have made a note of this idea and will certainly try it. Another great take.

Great idea. The colours are vivid and the effect of it floating gives it something different to "still life". Nice one. very a-peel-ing (groan)

WOW .many many thanks for all the positive comments guy's n gals , you've all made my evening & given me a mahoooosive grin :D

Lemon juice is at the ready for a reshoot along with an idea to get a slightly different angle of shot .Oasis was used to stop the 'nana moving via some florists wire as it was suspended between 2 cupboard door handles on some black thread ! The background came about due to desperation at not being able to get rid of slight shadow to the left of it ,found it on PSE purely by accident!

Andy : Been loooking & looking but can't see the yellowish section you mention ,you've probably got a
better monitor or better eyesight than me :-) But may have been part of the background from PSE

Patrick & Andy :
Didn't intentionally place it in the middle as was thinking about the rule of thirds...but figured it mght look even odder to one side ? Will try it on the reshoot though

Still grinning like a cheshire cat :-)
A huge thanks to all who have taken the time to comment , points taken on board & will be used for the re-shoot week....now when is that ??

A couple of great shot's there!! The car is superb!! b/w and i just love the banana idea

Well here goes with week 5 . Hard Nut was the 1st thing that sprang to mind & I had a bag of cob nuts left from Christmas so figured they'd finally come in handy :)

DSC_5428.jpg

Unhappy :
After about 60 shots frustration got the better of me so I plumped for this one . Couldn't get the lighting exactly right ,wherever I put it I got a bit of a flare on the nutcrackers & try as I did couldn't blend away the bits of light on the shells
Happy :
eating the nuts

Well, it's original....

My first impression was the composition. The space around the nuts feel a bit off the me, for want of a better word.

I'd like to see a slightly lower angle; the nut in the nut cracker cracked; for some reason I'd like to see either more cracked nuts or more uncracked nuts (I don't know why, I guess how you have it is balanced); I had a rough go at cropping (with my hands on the on the monitor) to see what a closer crop would look like and, well, give it a try?

However, the photograph looks really sharp, good contrast, depth and you've managed to keep some detail in the whites of the nuts.

PS, I simply love hazelnuts...:)

Cheers.

Hiya Lynne,

Personally I think you have nailed this one

I love everything about the image from the concept to the composition. I'm not sure why you are unhappy with the lighting as it looks spot on to me. The way you have the nut cracker positioned alleviates any drastic reflections, and the bit of lighting on same makes it look more heavy duty than 'plastic'. The lighting on the nuts gives them a more realistic and life-like appearance (although a very slight sharpen would benefit).

I can see that you have put a lot of thought into this image, from both a composition and technical point of view ... so well done!

It is a very appetising image, and makes me want to crack some nuts now ;)

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi Lynne,
An original take on theme there, and 60 shots is dedication and determination, which in my opinion has certainly paid off. The whole image is great from the composition to the colours to the detail.
Nice work:clap:

Martin

Lynne, for what my limited knowledge is worth i think this works really well. The colours, composition and lighting make this a great shot.

Great shot - I agree with Steve - colour and composition are spot on

Thanks all ,your comments have really boosted me as this shot was driving me nutty:bonk:

DAWN : your comments really mean a lot to me, having seen the standard of all your shots , many thanks

Andy : I know what you're saying .I tried a lower angle (several times!) but am still struggling with getting the focus right ,probably due to lighting? Did think about the nut in the cracker being cracked but decided the aim was for it to look like a hard nut that just wouldn't crack (there's always one in the bag that won't:lol:) I also went back to it & cropped it further following your suggestion & think it may be better ,may post it up later so you can judge. & I am OCD about eveness & things being balanced:lol: Thanks for the feedback though 'cos a fresh pair of eye's always helps

Just out of curiosity ,how many shots do most people take before they get "the one " ? I average at least 30-40 :bang:

Hiya Lynne,

I love your hazelnuts photo! I like the composition you have created, my eyes are automatically drawn to the nutcracker and the nut in it. I actually like the reflected light in on the nut shell. I think it gives them a polished look. Maybe the reflection on the nutcracker handle is a bit distracting!

Overall great photo!
