you were doing great right up until there - you were right guns don't kill people, people do, but you need a person to fire one and the American system lets every wacko buy one hence the atrocities in Schools and Malls - there has to be controls in place and you either need to be able tp prove that you need one for your living or you shoot at a club, there is no excuse for anything else.
BTW I am an ex FAC licence holder and I am aware of all the issues - I couldn't justify keeping a gun at home any longer just for vermin control

Quite. But a lot here were in favour of the tough anti gun laws yet are foaming at the mouth with indignation at the mere suggestion that alcohol be banned.

Perhaps there should be stricter controls for alcohol consumption, right now ever person over 18yrs old can buy alcohol and drink themselves unconcious and suffer the consequences of such. See where I am going?

Its not something I could plausibly object to, so I will not and it would be a good idea.
Perhaps then alcohol rationing could be brought in, curfews etc. It would be wonderful

I can see where you are going but the pubs/clubs should have to pay for town centre policing and the NHS should charge for the treatment alcohol related injuries/conditions. I recently had to walk through an A & E department at 2.00pm in the morning to take my wife to see her dying Father - it was like going through the Wild West with Police everywhere trying to keep order - why Doctors and Nurses should have to treat these animals I don't know

IMHO we have laws in place to deal with it, and enforce it. A few custodial sentences for such behaviour would work. Particularly as you can arrest them in the hospital. Its appalling what happens to NHS staff, police etc dealing with these animals and what normal people going about their daily business have to witness due to enmass drunkeness.

People with serious driving convictions are not regarded as normal law abiding people though...
Whats motoring got to do with this. I saw a family on a train with a young child. They were having to listen to some horrible roudy youths utter foul language and say disguting things. The poor woman had to cover her small sons ears so they wouldn't hear the foulness. Eventually they told these awful people to stop the language as they had a young child, and then they got ridiculed.
Its these sort of people I was referring to. Decent people, having to endure filth.

Can't, guns are banned. I am sure there is a pun revolving around shots to the face and shots of spirits there somewhere but I can't pull it together. Maybe after a couple of beers......
For the record, beer doesn't make me angry or aggressive. In fact the more I drink the more I love everyone!

Firearm and shotgun certificates are frequently refused when the applicant has a bad driving record that indicates that they are not responsible members of society, that's the point in your post that I was answering.
Of course, people such as Thomas Hamilton and Derick Bird were both well known to the police but for some reason were still allowed to have firearms that they both then used to murder a large number of innocent people, so the police can ignore criminal behaviour and their own intelligence information if they want to.

No, there was a group of them. I didn't want a bottle in my face. Why do people feel the need to drink alcohol and swig beer on trains.

Sadly I include myself in that. But people shouldn't have to sit down, fearfully hoping to go unnoticed in public transport because of lager fueled louts. If their alcohol was restricted, or present laws actually enforced to arrest drunken and disorderly people, punish them, and even to stop places serving clearly intoxicated people (I believe there is a law about that), we simply wouldn't have the problems we see.

You saw a family getting "harassed" on a train by some lager louts and the only thing you did was to wait a bit and then post on a photography forum that alcohol should be banned?????
Next time do something. And I don't mean make idiotic posts on forums. I mean do something. We simply "wouldn't have the problems we see" if people didn't just sit and watch when they saw something they knew to be wrong.

What, and risk a knife in the back or a bottle over the face.
My point was more about why alcohol needs to consumed moderately and not to excess . Ideally it should be a controlled substance.

Sadly too many people are happy to accuse others of not helping, but have never been in the situation
themselves so have no idea how they would react.
We all like to think we would stand up for someone and face the consequences but in reality it
doesn't always happen and can make the situation far worse

yes - if i saw a young mother facing possible injury in the same way i'd have no choice. However if I didnt have the cojones to do anything I wouldn't then be making outraged posts about how something must be done..
although in predicatable ST4 style theres no evidence that these youths were anything other than a bit foul mouthed ... theres a big difference between saying f*** on a train and knifing someone who asks you to stop... mind you i'm not saying that steve would always do nothing, if he had a gun and they didnt i'm sure he'd be very brave

None of us know exactly how we will react until it happens, you may think you would do
the right thing but no one really knows and it's easy to say what you would do from the safety
of your keyboard.
Unfortunately you never know what weapons people are hiding until it's too late and I very doubt Steve is the sort to

Excuse me...but...that is a little uncalled for.
I am merely highlighting the issues that excess alcohol consumption bring. How can enforcing the law and trying to get people to drink less alcohol be anything other than a good thing? Please tell me.

She was with her husband/partner. it was a young family coming back from a trip to Manchester, they got off at Leeds, as did I. It was a 930 train, hardly late at night and the carriage was full of chanting louts. It was quite harrassing and tbh, a big group of yobs would probably go for a guy, and as I am not a knife carrying, gun yielding person or a self defence expert I could very easily find myself getting a doing. My point is such that freely available cheap alcohol creates such situations, and they are not pleasant for innocent bystanders. Funnily enough, during the day when these sorts tend to be sober, you just don't get these vile incidents.
Rather than troll away, you really ought to think about what you write.

Mrs Nod's car is limited as far as its top speed goes (artificially, all vehicles run out of oomph at some point, even Veyrons!). At the time her car was built, most European cars were limited to 155MPH (I forget why now.)

Gentlemens agreement with the big 3, Mercedes, BMW and Audi made a pact that saloon/estates would be restricted to 155mph. Sports cars were exempt which is why Porsche sports cars tend to crack the 160mph quite easily and some will reach nearly 200mph. Gearing in my Mercedes C220cdi prevented it going much above 138mph but it pulled quite strongly to the limiter meaning taller gears it would go faster. The E320cdi was limited to 155mph, but in reality driving it past 145mph was a sluggish affair and it really stuggled at 150mph to hit the 155mph, not because the gearing (gearing wise it would in theory do 160mph) but because it didn't quite have the power.
All these speeds are well in excess of the UK max NSL of 70mph. Japanese domestic markets have a limiter fitted that prevents them going above 112mph, still well above their max NSL. To me, there should be similar device on UK cars that can be disabled for track use perhaps but there's no real need for anyone other than emergency services and police to have cars that can exceed 70mph. Perhaps a tolerance isn't a bad idea, and I think it good cars are engineered for high speed, as it means they are over engineered for the way they are used. making them durable, comfortable and reliable for their actual usage pattern.
