Like I said, anyone showing me photos of dogs, or dog-handlers wearing Festive Santa hats will be subjected to the full force of my ire...

Well as there is a few miles and a drop of water between us
I'll risk it :D

I do agree with you both. My only problem is that due to my inexperience, I feel my only input would generally be posting pictures as opposed to giving C&C to others, which to me personally I feel is unfair of me as I expect others to comment but I don't. I guess with time and as my experience grows I will be able to be more useful to others! I will persevere though as although I might not post often I certainly have learnt loads on here and feel that it is probably the friendliest forum out there! :)

Can't help but agree with Yv - you'll see an image and it will appeal or will not appeal because.........?

And thats the bit we like to hear :)

I'm not a technical photographer by any means but I'm happy to say why I like or do not like things :) and if done constructively and politely critique will always be welcomed!

But 'nice pic' is always good too :D

Fair do's folks...thanks for your comments, I totally agree with them. I will be getting more stuck in in the future, although whilst currently I don't post much, I do live on this site..probably the most visited site in my profile!:)..I think my wife's getting jealous of the time I spend reading on here:love:

The more you look at other peoples photo's and try to work out what you do / don't like and why, the more you will understand how you could improve your own shots.

I've got b****r all experience but I can say if I like something or not - and usually have a pretty accurate stab at why... even if I don't know the proper technical words or am not sure how to correct it.

I think I read the thread in question - you could see which way it was going right from the start - in fact it could have been posted as a windup.

Perhaps some of the replies were harsh, but don't let us get it out of proportion. The vast majority of people, posts and threads on here are pretty damn helpful.

If you've got pair of eyes and enough nouse to compose your own photographs you've all the tools you ned to give critique on photo's. Initially, I didn't feel I could necessarily give anything helpful technically, but after posting a few images, I realised that most of the feedback I recieved wasn't massively technical, just simple stuff like "crop maybe 10% off from the left". and if anything was technical then i just replied with "put that in words of 2 syllables or less and talk me through it"

As Yv said, you really do get out, what you put into it, so get stuck in.

I feel a bit like that myself but, as people have mentioned, just saying you like an image, and why, is enough. I'm going to make a conscious effort to do that more often.

Tell you what - nip down the shops and buy a sense of humour, why don't you?

I got one mate how about you go to yours and get some manners and respect because you can tell some one something without being rude and you have to remember that what YOU MIGHT THINK IS NOT RUDE SOME ONE ELSE MIGHT THINK IS RUDE.

the irony of you and arkady arguing in this thread is not lost. please, both of you, count to 10...:)

Whilst he is there ,perhaps he could buy some war story books, action man comics and other military trivia, that he could action, rehearse and post as his own. See Rob, some of us can be rude as well.......:)

You don`t have sole rights mate.

None intended, but have a think.

I'm afraid you will get that on all internet forums.

Guys chillax...no need. Its christmas....isnt it?!

oh Shoot Me!! [no Rob, not literally] :bang:

Come on guys, stand back, the flames are burning holes in your suits. Its an internet forum, some tongue in cheek comments are normal, its what smileys are for, but rudeness is not acceptable. End of. Keep counting

I've been out of the loop for a couple of days and missed all the fun :)

I've spent a wee while reading the comments and threads and tbh, I feel both disappointed and proud of our staff team at the same time, I was swinging from thoughts of instant and permanent ban to crikey these guys are doing a good job at maintaining a fair and even balance. Had I been involved there would have been a few accounts being deleted.

We've worked bloody hard building this place up and won't sit back and watch it get torn apart through sheer bad manners. I would ask every member to reread Hacker's opening post and put a post it on your monitor which simply says "Think"

btw......that's me in the Av, :D

No way, the Av looks cool and sober............:D

Good to have you back mate. Now can we all relax and enjoy the festive season.

If i remember right last christmas we had a similer thing.... hmmmmm Must be the time of year....

Tbh, I find the forum erupts in the winter and during the school summer holidays, Must be a combination of people getting tetchy and fed up by the dark nights and cold weather and then the little uns with too much time on their hands.

It is not all well and good to be slightly rude weather it is tongue in check or not rude is rude end off and is not necessary in life. You can inform some one of a bad photo with out being rude. And if you can not you should be qutie and let the nice people have their say

This thread seems to be evolving into exactly the kind of thing that it was meant to be trying to avoid. Try to stop bullying and it turns into a slanging match........ :shake:

Thanks for the comments about C&C....I don't feel qualified to comment as I can't help technically only visually...but I shall be more vocal in my thoughts now. Cheers!

Nicely modaged. ;)

Personally I found it refreshing to see the individuals dealt with rather than the thread permanently closed.

Temporarily closing a thread is completely understandable to allow for a cooling off period and acting directly upon the members who step out of line with temp bans makes a much better example.

if its open again i'll pop in and mention that my post was outta line and a bit personal just in case the OP comes back :S

(my emphasis)

That's not rude...just incorrect- the implication that I'm fabricating things perhaps?
You'd best be very careful saying things like that...or me being rude to you will be the least of it...

"None Intended" ;)

I can't be responsible for your (seemingly wilful) misinterpretation of a tongue-in-cheek comment...maybe your alleged sense of humour is in need of a tune-up?

You seem determined to pick a fight with me, why is that, I wonder?
Did I slate a photo of yours because it was out of focus or something?

Seems some people can be too proud to say "Sorry, that's not what I meant, apologies if you were offended"

or "Sorry I was a bit touchy, I thought you were having a go, I didn't realise you were merely having a joke"

Male bravado is quite sad at at times.

I think everyone needs to calm down in here and read what people are *trying* to say instead of flying off the handle. That applies to both sides.

Now c'mon, get a grip girls or I'll be buying you some panties for Christmas ;) :D

I don't believe it! Woke up in the morning and they are still at it!

I am one of the people that got a 24 hours suspension from the thread that prompted this thread. I was the first to respond to the original poster and I asked a genuine question about what he meant by turning professional. Within a few posts the thread had gone down hill. I later chipped in with a couple more posts that may not have been overly helpful to the OP but they were no means rude or disrespectful. Personally I think my suspension was harsh and out of line but I've accepted it because at the end of the day this is an internet forum and I can live without it for 24 hours easily enough. What gripes me the most is that there were 2 very well established members of this forum who made posts very similar to mine who didn't get suspensions. Both of these members are usually very helpful and I suspect they have met a lot fo TP members at shoots and conventions which I haven't done. I'm not too happy with the double standards by the mods but again, I'm happy to accept it because they run the forum and they make the rules.

I'd love to know if I was one of the people being considered for a permanent ban. Feel free to PM me if you thought I was sooooo out of line because I'm genuinely failing to see it.

If we all thought along those lines then we wouldn't have any sort of C&C whatsoever on here. I hardly get any feedback on pictures that I post up, fair enough I guess as they're obviously not deemed to be that good or people just don't want to click on my thread, but if someone came in and completely caned the shots I'd posted up, I'd accept that as I put the pictures in for feedback, goods or bad.

In fairness to you, I was a bit baffled as to how certain posters got away without a banning, as there were a couple of individuals who added nothing to the thread with similar comments to those who actually got banned, more than once.

I remember looking at "that" thread, but stayed well clear.
I help moderate another forum and appreciate what a difficult (and thankless) job it is.

I am one of the guilty parties when it comes to not participating as much as I could. I haven't been out and about with my camera as much as I would like this year due to other commitments, so have mainly just lurked on the sidelines. I will endeavour to participate more in the New Year.

...Guys chillax...
Willbaroo, you have committed the cardinal sin by using the word 'chillax' - go straight back to 1995 and have a word with yourself :D:D

....Male bravado is quite sad at at times...

The perils of internet anonymity methinks... ;)

I never saw the thread everyone's going on about but I get the feeling it wasn't exactly friendly. I do agree that threads that revolve around arguments and general rudeness isn't cricket, but there is a sense on here that any comments that's slightly scathing is an attack and should be stifled.

I had a bit of a ticking off the other month when I rightly or wrongly said a few things that I thought were okay (something about the validity of the shutter being pressed in the first place on an image I wasn't keen on) but some of you disagreed with my approach to saying what I thought. In hindsight, yes, I could have been a bit more eloquent but what irked me most was that the OP wasn't fussed at all by what I'd said; I got it both barrels from some of the more, let's say 'outspoken' members who took it upon themselves to correct me for my sins.

To add to that, I posted a comment about poor processing on a thread from a new member (less than 100 posts) and got some very crappy comments back from him/her, something about if they didn't make it in photography, they'd taking up angling photography like me - I didn't bite and if anything, I took it on the chin. Anyway, to appease everyone removed my comments and nothing more was said.

I like to think that I've made some good contributions to this forum, through posting good threads, good pics and doing some good tutorials. I'll continue to do so until my typing fingers are worn down to bloody stumps but what I do find happening more is the established members lambasting anything they disagree with and lots of other people following in sheep fashion. That's not constructive and if we end up just putting niceties in the crit sections (or any sections for that matter) because we are fearful of the backlash if we say something a little harsh, then aren't we compromising the integrity of what this forum is all about?

As Robert Duvall said in Days Of Thunder, 'rubbin' is racing' - now and then we may have the odd intellectual collision but that's not to say it's bad. We just have to make sure we don't turn it into a full-blown pile-up....

It's not about niceties. Criticism does not have to be mean, even if it harsh. There is a nice way to say that there is something wrong with a photo - it does not always have to go along the lines of "I think that is rubbish because....". If stated in a nice, encouraging way, it makes the poster think and try to get better. You could always say "It could be made better by ......." That is why it is called "constructive" criticism.

Newbies (in any field) are like children. We don't tell our kids that they are crap at something, rather we tell them that although what they did was good, there are some things that could be done better. Same principle.

Telling someone to find an alternate hobby because someone else thinks their photos aren't fit for purpose is very destructive.

P.S. Not aimed at anyone in particular, just a general statement.

another two took a holiday tonight for being rude and obnoxious
