Willbaroo, you have committed the cardinal sin by using the word 'chillax' - go straight back to 1995 and have a word with yourself

The perils of internet anonymity methinks...
I never saw the thread everyone's going on about but I get the feeling it wasn't exactly friendly. I do agree that threads that revolve around arguments and general rudeness isn't cricket, but there is a sense on here that any comments that's slightly scathing is an attack and should be stifled.
I had a bit of a ticking off the other month when I rightly or wrongly said a few things that I thought were okay (something about the validity of the shutter being pressed in the first place on an image I wasn't keen on) but some of you disagreed with my approach to saying what I thought. In hindsight, yes, I could have been a bit more eloquent but what irked me most was that the OP wasn't fussed at all by what I'd said; I got it both barrels from some of the more, let's say 'outspoken' members who took it upon themselves to correct me for my sins.
To add to that, I posted a comment about poor processing on a thread from a new member (less than 100 posts) and got some very crappy comments back from him/her, something about if they didn't make it in photography, they'd taking up angling photography like me - I didn't bite and if anything, I took it on the chin. Anyway, to appease everyone removed my comments and nothing more was said.
I like to think that I've made some good contributions to this forum, through posting good threads, good pics and doing some good tutorials. I'll continue to do so until my typing fingers are worn down to bloody stumps but what I do find happening more is the established members lambasting anything they disagree with and lots of other people following in sheep fashion. That's not constructive and if we end up just putting niceties in the crit sections (or any sections for that matter) because we are fearful of the backlash if we say something a little harsh, then aren't we compromising the integrity of what this forum is all about?
As Robert Duvall said in
Days Of Thunder, 'rubbin' is racing' - now and then we may have the odd intellectual collision but that's not to say it's bad. We just have to make sure we don't turn it into a full-blown pile-up....
