AP - Doing 'FREE' reflectors again... :-)

bought one of these
occasionally buy a photography magazine, thought it worth trying AP
not too impressed as it's mostly adverts but aren't they all!

the reflector though...a big pants but perfectly fine, £2.40 minus whatever you think the mag is worth for a read and if I use it and like it I'll buy a proper one that is larger and more robust.

thanks for a heads up on the promotion..

Thanks for the heads up. I managed to get both gifts, one from whsmith and the other from tesco. It took me a few minutes to work out how to fit it back in the bag again ***. :D

Got my reflector (oh, and the magazine)... looks like that was the more popular gift since I had to hunt around before I found one that wasn't the white-balance tool.

You're welcome Matt... ... but you need to think a bit more laterally... :D ...

So very true Carol... ;)

The added benefit of course, because unlike others I DO think they are reasonable for what they are and they will have their uses (see below), is that they are so very light and extremely portable that you can bung them in your camera bag and they will always be there jic... :D

Uses for AP Reflector/WB tool:

Good as sun shades and fans in hot weather,

Whisk wasps and flies away no trouble,

Place one over your food/drink on a picnic to keep bugs off it,

Place a torch behind the white one and it will attract moths at night for you to photograph,

Wrap a frozen Mars bar in the silver one and it will keep it cooler longer,

Reflect the sun into a distant/lost child/friend's face to attract their attention,

You could even use the white one as a reflector to lighten a shady side of your subject when photographing it and even, this is the good bit, use the grey one to adjust your custom white balance before you take the photograph using the reflecting properties of the white one...

See, they're not useless their uses are endless... ;)

Have fun playing with yours... :naughty:

:p

I was right with you Ven and ready to relent on my opinions and apologise profusely until I got to the last two suggestions and realised you were just taking the ****;)

Cheers for the heads up. Just got my 2 copies from Tesco.

AP's circulation this week must have nearly doubled. He he.

Doubled? and the rest mate, bet they sell about 400% this week. everybody I know is buying them, even my neighbour with a compact told me he's just got his, it's big news on the web lol.

Hey I think I'v been done, mines silver one side and bloody light grey the other, arn't they supposed to be white/silver?

No Wayne that's why people are buying two copies because the reflector and WB thingy are two seperate jobs.

Mine had reflector written on it, there were plenty of whirt balance ones left when I bought mine lunchtime, I think I got the last reflector one. So the others white/grey??

I think it's just white which I thought was quite odd seeing as I thought WB was supposed to be set to 18% grey.

No thats the grey card your thinking of mate.
Thanks for the info, I have to go near tesco later I'll have a look for the white balance one.
Anybody want a second hand copy of AP (with the free gizmo??) only £6 quid?? don't all rush at once.

I discovered an alternative use of them. It was quite hot in London today so I whipped one out and use it to fan myself. :D

I got one a few days, doubt i will use it much its good to have it just in case! thanks for the heads up.

took me a while to figure out how to get it back into its bag though! lol

Does it really need to be in a plastic bag inside the plastic bag the mags in? the packagings better made and cost more than the reflector for heavens sake.

No thats the grey card your thinking of mate.

But when you use the eye dropper in LR or photoshop aren't you supposed to select a midtone not a white point? Been a long time since I've needed to adjust white balance.

couldn't find a reflector in Nuneaton yesterday.
Also it's been a while since I bought a photo mag, I had forgotten the looks you get reaching for the top shelf:-).
Which is a bit rum considering the filth on FRONT/FHM/NUTS on the middle shelves!!

Paul

I "hit lucky" and managed to get a reflector in Limerick, yesterday...Handy little bit of kit!

You can use any neutral tone in LR, grey or white will work equally well for setting colour balance, it's just looking for a cast.
The 18% grey cards usually used for setting exposure, but as it's neutral you could use it for either really.

I've just seen this thread and wondered how long I've got till the next issue is out? I managed to get a white balancer at lunchtime, but that was all WHSmiths had. Have I got time to look for a reflector tomorrow or would I have missed it?

Thanks for the heads up by the way.

You're welcome... :D ... next issue not in the shops until next Tuesday... ;)

Bought one with the reflector today. Actully enjoyed reading the magazine as well, have not read AP for about 25 years or more.
I got bit feed up with the usual digital mags repeating articles. Leica seems to get a lot of page time !! How many here are going to swap their DSLR for an M9 then ??

It is generally a good read - shame about all the ads but that's how they keep the price down I suppose...

Did you not read the M9 thread then... :naughty:

:p

Got mine yesterday, plenty of both at Tesco.

I couldn't help noticing that for a magizine aimed at "amateurs" it doesn't actually tell it's readers how to use it's freebee, which seems an oversite to me, I suspect a lot of them wouldn't have a clue how to use it. or worse, fold it back up.

Actually that was a point I meant to make earlier. When I went in there, I didn't know what to expect from the white balance tool. I suspected it would be similar to the whibal cards. Then I saw it was like the reflector, but white. So I bought the reflector instead, as I knew how that worked, and thought I would read the article inside and see how the white balance tool was meant to be used.
But no article! Didn't buy the second copy after that.

they are not as good as the stuff i have that cost alot more but i will use them on holiday as they pack small and weigh f all!

Picked up a white balancer the other day, should prove handy once my welding glass turns up. Who says it needs to be an expensive hobby!

Thank you TPers for all the bright ideas.

Yeah, crazy. They had some info the week BEFORE - dur!

Looks like the guy from Fingerbobs.

Anyway, got reflector with sub issue. Bought white balance issue.
