AP - Doing 'FREE' reflectors again... :-)

Is the reflector supposed to be grey/silver? I expected it to be white:thinking:

I thought that too, I managed to get both at McColls newsagents, the white balancer is white and reflector is grey

Picked up one of each at my local sainsburys lunchtime today. Cheers for the headsup.

For those that wouldn't normally buy AP or wouldn't normally buy two identical copies of a magazine and those that buy AP but are in no particular rush to get it on the day of release unless there is some free tat attached, turn to the inside of the back cover and read the article by Roger Hicks.

Then smile wryly at the irony of what has just happened, I did.

AP's marketing gurus should be sainted ... they just made me buy two copies .. anyone want a free mag minus the gift??

Thanks for the heads up :)

I'm sure that's what you weally meant... :D

Enjoy your twix Julie... ... or share it I weally don't mind... :naughty:

:p

Can't type on stupid iPhone!

I meant wee though, it's quite small but it was free so never mind. May go back and get a white balance one too.

I went and had a look in W H Smith but couldn't be tempted to part with my cash, still have the reflector from when they gave them away last time. Nonetheless, worth buying the magazine for the reflector (if you need one).

Nigel.

 i picked one up, got the reflector, the mags a good read too for a newbie, thanks for the heads up:thumbs:

I got the WB....loads left in my local WH Smiths and ASDA (Rushden, Northants).

Thanks for this, I got a white balancer! I'll try out later and see if it's any good.

got my reflector today as thats the only one stocked, im a bit disappointed that its not silver/gold and instead its just silver.

But from what I can gather so far, it's only under £3.00 ???? Sounds like a bargain to me - just wish I could find a copy!

What did you expect for FREE? That's an extra £3 you could have put in your lens fund.

picked up my copy today, got hte reflector :D whats the white balancer tool like? it looks like it could be used as a diffuser... correct???

Chris,

Just picked my up my copy - plenty left at Tesco although mostly white balance tools - got myself a reflector :)

Cheers, so how does it work, do you just set your custom white balance for your camera against this???

Watch this video, skip the first 3 minutes though, at 3:14 is starts to explain it.

He says he has changed it to custom but he just leaves it on auto, lazy git

Thanks Andy, thats what i thought it was for, but just thought it was quite large, since you could just use a piece of paper to achieve the same thing, looks more like a diffuser..

Yeah, you could easily use it as a diffuser. Seems to do a good job, just feels cheap.

Soz Julie... :$ ... I was being norty... :naughty:

Absolutely nothing wrong with your typing and even less wrong with your iPhone... ... it's just me being stoopid... :cuckoo:

Forgive me... :D

The reflector is shiny silver/grey on one side and dull Gray on the other, but is this dull Gray side 18% Gray ?

cut the middle out of it and give it to a small child to use as a hula-hoop.

I subscribe to the magazine and got the white balance thingy.

So after a quick fumble amongst the magazines in my local Sainsburys I got the reflector as well! Now got two copies of the magazine!

Just back from local Sainsburys ,got myself 2 copies of mag. thanks for the heads up

Cheers for the heads up. Just got my 2 copies from Tesco.

AP's circulation this week must have nearly doubled. He he.

4 posts out of 154, nothing like a bit of exaggeration to prove a point is there. Last time I checked I was as entitled to politely air my opinion as the next person and if my opinion is that they're not worth getting excited over or buying when you don't know what you're buying them for then I can express it. Obviously you've not read the Roger Hicks article yet, perhaps you were inadvertantly blinded by the awesome power of the reflector:shrug:

IMO they're rubbish and exactly what you'd expect for the money but if they help push sales of AP which I think is one of the few magazines worth reading then congratulations to AP on the apparent success of the promotion. I hope the increased sales last longer than my reflector will;)

i agree that they're not very good quality, but then again..what would you expect as a freebie anyway.having not used a reflector before, they will sit in my bag "just in case" the need for one arises.i may even invest in a decent one in the not to distant future...

Got one of each yesterday, as said not the best but are free (or cheep which ever way you look at it), for me having never dabbled with either before properly, will be good for learning new skills, and can always invest in better ones when I know they are of use to me, thanks again Venomator

Just a thought!...

Why don't we have a TalkPhotography WB/Reflector? I'd quite happily pay for a good quality one.

So what do you think?

:plusone:

That's the way I look at it too. If I can learn the basics on something cheap, and I like what it can do for me, then it's worth it. Think of it as a trial run. If you know it's going to be a useful tool, then you can look into a better one. If it turns out not to be the thing for you, then you haven't lost too much and you get a mag to boot. Only half way through that at the moment, but if there's one or two articles that I like in it, then I'm happy.

So very true Carol... ;)

The added benefit of course, because unlike others I DO think they are reasonable for what they are and they will have their uses (see below), is that they are so very light and extremely portable that you can bung them in your camera bag and they will always be there jic... :D

Uses for AP Reflector/WB tool:

Good as sun shades and fans in hot weather,

Whisk wasps and flies away no trouble,

Place one over your food/drink on a picnic to keep bugs off it,

Place a torch behind the white one and it will attract moths at night for you to photograph,

Wrap a frozen Mars bar in the silver one and it will keep it cooler longer,

Reflect the sun into a distant/lost child/friend's face to attract their attention,

You could even use the white one as a reflector to lighten a shady side of your subject when photographing it and even, this is the good bit, use the grey one to adjust your custom white balance before you take the photograph using the reflecting properties of the white one...

See, they're not useless their uses are endless... ;)

Have fun playing with yours... :naughty:
