the particular stretch that wrinkles me was a dirt footpath for living memory bordering a large estuary ,last year the authorities saw fit to tarmac the whole length as part of the round the u.k coastal path ,they have strategic signposts placed showing that its shared between pedestrians and cyclists .hopefully that clears that one up ,and as i have stated i have no problem with cyclists who are just out for a jolly in the sunshine ,its the more money than sense idjits who buy a racing bike ,all the lycra gear .and think that a four foot wide path is suitable for a race with there other yuppy mates and expect EVERYONE to jump out of there way .
looking at a few of the replies i,m not alone in this either ,only yesterday i was driving away from the area up a narrow lane which is at best described as single track road .when coming down the hill towards me is one of these cretins no hands on the handlebars as he was holding a bag of crisps in one hand and eating them with the other hand .i wouldn't mind if it was a child but i would estimate the age as 30 something .the mind boggles

you want to speak to the authorities concerned - the best practice minimum width for a shared use path is 3m - 120cm is far too narrow , and i'm very suprised planning for the upgrade was granted.

Seriously though, don't get me wrong plenty of well trained dogs around. But go towards one flapping your arms, and dressed in clothing that act like a heat map, well what you expect.

If you came to the talk photography super mega mega meet you could have experienced how well trained dogs can be. Opposed to just acting from behind a keyboard.

Perhaps at the next one we could demonstrate this experiment in the action shot session and have a cyclist and runner dressed in Lycra running up and down :) will make for some wonderful shots.

Anyway I thought this was about cyclist ;)
 
My dog likes the idea of chasing cyclists (much as she like the idea of chasing sheep) but i don't let her do either - simples

This is true - but 4ft is far to narrow for it to be a designated cycle path , the DfT local transport note 2/08 "Cycle Infra Structure design" says "where there is no segregation between cyclists and pedestrians a route width of 3m should be regarded as the minimum acceptable" While that's only a recomendation it's virtually impossible to get planning for an upgrade without adhering to it ( I know this because i'm in the middle of applying for planning to build a MUP and a proposal for 2.4m width has been kicked back by the planners)

hence why TBf should check with local authorities , as it may just be some over enthusiastic muppet at putting up signs without changing the designation (when i managed the thames path we had that problem in Reading with some numptie from district promoting cycling on the tow path without actualy thinking about whether it was suitable)

Ah damn that backfired, I was hoping neil_g would wear the Lycra. How about making it slightly harder for the auto focus boys and girls and I'll see if I can find my old Mr motivator styled gear :eek: :)

If that is honestly all you can take from it, I'd suggest to lighten up a little bit, bring your Lycra and join me for the next session super mega mega meet. You can also see how wonderful placid and well trained the dogs were, hey cobra's birds are still alive :)

Then again if you aren't relaxed the dogs can sense that :p

I'll bring a case of eye and mind bleach!!!

I would widen the target for hate to ALL irresponsible road and other path users; from pedestrians who wander blindly along while texting, through psycholists who freewheel down the hill into town with hands in pockets/crisp packets/texting/on phone at speeds well in excess of the limit (and through the red light at the 1/2 way point down the hill...) to lorry drivers who start to try to overtake shortly before a steep incline. Have to include dogs both off leads and on those bloody extending ones as well as those oversized crap machines that make tasty burgers!

Sadly the dogs won't be at the next meet JP one of them died a few weeks back, but there is a replacement in the pipeline

As for cyclists, I have had a few run ins with idiot tearing along bridleways next to a local canal and just yelling at people to get out
of the way without even slowing down, sorry to say that resulted in one almost ending up in the canal ;)
Yes I will give way if asked nicely but not otherwise, I have as much right as them to be there

Cyclists who fail to wear a proper cycling helmet on the road are stupid
Cyclists who don't think red lights are a rule for them to are stupid.
Cyclists who choose to wear black at night and cycle on unlit streets without lights are stupid.

Motorists who think it acceptable to do near double the national speed limit on a public road are stupid.
Motorists who fail to indicate are stupid.

Horseriders who do not acknowledge when a motorised vehicle slows down are ignorant are rude.

This probably makes up a few % of each group of people.

Bottom line if stupid, ignorant and rude people stayed of the road, cycle ways etc. the world would be a better place, hallelujah to that but it won't happen
 
I haven't had an issue with mountain bikers, all the ones I've met while out walking have been polite/considerate. Lycra loonies on the road completely different. The road I live in is used as a race track every weekend, if there is a group riding together they will usually be three abreast, they pass far to close to horse and riders and walkers(there is no footpath). In fact they are such a nuisance that I'm thinking of starting a petition to get to the law changed to compel them to wear readable registration numbers so that those who are a danger to themselves and others can more easily be prosecuted.
Thing is a lot of my friends do this road racing and they are perfectly normal
people, right up to the point they get on their bikes and start with the Bradley Wiggins impression. There are lots of words to describe these self obsessed and selfish cyclists, probably the best one begins with W and means onanists.

Oh no...So sorry to hear. I hope it didn't suffer to badly. They were lovely...

Regarding cyclist, seriously I'm with many others on here...In general there are just like with everything else in life some bad ones and some great ones. If only one day we could all live in harmony and respect each other and try and understand each other behaviours. I still don't get why quite a few feel the need to spit on my car and shout abuse towards our countryside tractor. It is not like we are in Chelsea besides I live here :) And I agree, quite a few on bridle paths that come racing around the corner whilst I'm running or walking the dog nicely of the lead and given no time what so ever to respond to the situation. Yet others slow down when they see walkers, and give me time to go the side, make my dog sit neatly next to me in the finish position and watch them go by....It is possible to live in harmony and enjoy this beautiful country...

To be honest if I came across anyone like that I'd happily push them in the canal.. No need to be rude, I always say morning/afternoon or excuse me etc.

While climbing out of Corfe Castle a nice couple Of walkers the other day heard me coming (wheezing) up behind them and pulled over and offered some encouraging words as I passed by. Exchanged a bit of banter about who'd make it to the top first without having a coronary :D

Some people are just plain rude no matter how they travel. I imagine the "get out the way" guy is just as bad mannered as a pedestrian or motorist.

Speaking as a horse owner who regularly rides both on and off road, I've had a few run ins with cyclists I'd prefer to forget!!!

For those of you who cycle, could someone tell me why it's so hard to warn people (riders or walkers) when you're approaching from behind? What happened to those little bells mounted on handle bars and designed for just this purpose?

And to the guy who cycled past me recently when I was out on my horse, and was then heard to comment to his mate "blimey, did you see the a#%^e on that? ..." Firstly, I presume you were referring to my horse, and secondly, you should see yourself from the rear in Lycra shorts before passing comments on others' rear ends!!

yup my missus tells the same story. i normally announce my presence.

on the flip side while trying to traverse a heard of cows (the kind with the massive horns) i recently had a horse and rider gallop up behind me (unannounced) into the herd which i thought was very irresponsible if the cows decided to scatter, mowing both of us down in the process.

And you lot are a damn nuisance on the roads as well ... leaving bloody great piles of fresh horse sh*t everywhere for motorcyclists to skid on. It's especially annoying when it's out of sight around a bend and smack on the bloody racing line.
