Another Garage studio

Anyway I really enjoyed the session last night and will be doing the same again. I have a few ideas in relation to further shoots so if other local people want a go we can try those too. I have an idea for a shoot outside with a couple of models, full moon and graveyard.......

I think you guys have done really well and some very nice shots there. I'd certainly like to give it another go.

How are you finding the new equipment Darren?

Well I've been suffering from a really bad back for the past week so not had much chance to use it. I need move quite a bit of stuff out of the way to make it easier and attach the lights out of the way. With the ironing of the backdrop and some further messing it should be easier. Really liking the safari lights but not sure where the 1150 shots per charge comes from as mine was fully charged and didn't manage anything like that.

If you need someone to do some lifting give me a shout - happy to help. I don't do ironing though!!

Hope you don't mind i had a very quick play, as i agree with Garry about the earring and feet, which distracts from a nice image, i also hid her ear, the hair needs more work in this edit, but like i said it was very quick just to give you the idea :)

I really like your edit, thanks

I think numbers need to be limited each time though as it was a bit of a squeeze. I would have liked to get in there and maybe have a play, as I don't know anything about this kind of stuff - and to give the model some female moral support, but there wasn't even room for me to step in!!! However, I can have a play anytime, so won't take the place of other togs, but it would be nice to learn from others too sometime - maybe someone who knows about studio photography?

Oh and whoever comes round, make sure you TELL Darren to put the kettle on and make you a brew! He forgets to make his guests drinks and needs to be told! ;)

Giving the model some female moral support is an interesting concept:)
In my experience, most models are much happier when there aren't any other females present - men tend to look at them and think unprintable but complimentary thoughts, women tend to look at them and silently criticise them...
And before I get slated for saying that, that's what a lot of models have told me:)

No, that's probably a fair comment Gary, but I was referring to a young lady who is very new to this, and I felt bad about leaving her to the mercy of three chaps in a confined space. NOT that I thought anything bad would happen of course, just that when you're new to modeling, it may be a little daunting.

Having said that, some of us females are more than capable of appreciating what you men appreciate in a picture. There was nothing for me to criticise. Perhaps fellow female models might look at a (generic) model being photographed, and silently criticise, but not an old boiler like me! Maybe stand there, and wish I was that young and pretty again!

That's you in the dog house then Darren..? All looking good though, off to the portrait section now...

Well he is a very naughty boy you know. If one of the kids wants to have a friend round, he makes a big thing about them making sure the house is tidy, etc, so I've told him the same rules apply if he wants friends round, and that he should offer them a drink as soon as they come round. He's well known for it, and always leaves it to others - so I'm just telling folks to give him a nudge or a hint as to where the kettle is. :D

Right well Melissa has sown the two curtains together and done her best to iron them so should be a bit better whilst I look for alternative background materials.

I really want a white, a chromakey green and a couple of interesting ones. I really am going to have to go on another of Garry's training days as he did show us how to create an interesting background but there was just too much to try and take in especially with my memory.

Anyway this was a very quick shot taken with the background lights moved to the cross member; the background ironed and using a single safari studio light with a Lencarta 95cm octo softbox.

I have done NOTHING in PP other than shrink the image to the correct size for the forum.

NO PP

Just the background whitened

I need to reposition the background lights to get rid of the dark it but I know about that.

I am not in a good area for offering crit just now, mainly because I am absolutely shattered. These look good now. More importantly, are you enjoying it and do you have any plans to turn it into more than a hobby?

G.

Darren the b/g is not white buddy far from it where i am..

MD

Just deciding now on which 2 out of 3 of the following to get:

Hilite
Lencarta ring light
Lencarta Elitepro 300/600w main light

I can afford 2 of them and each has it's advantages. The Elitepro light will mean that I can use the lights all day without the battery going flat. The hilite will give me the white backgrounds much more easily and the ring light is just wonderful............

If I had selected a white brush rather than a nearly white one it would be :)

Ah ok then ..

I used to do mine a different way before I got the paper..

I am really enjoying it and enjoying my hobby more having the studio. I am going to be doing portraits for friends and relatives now but I have just been given a gig later in the year .......

110 Pensioners with prints etc......

I don't mind doing a bit of PP to be honest but with the hilite I think I should be most of the way there. I really do like low light stuff too hence the 1st shot which was a 180w light fitted with a snoot and a honeycomb and turned down low.

110 pensioners? :D

Yes 110 of them and possibly some groups, couples etc.

The background is my concern at the moment as I really want to sort something more interesting than white or black...

But....110 pensioners !!!

Awesome - how do you plan on doing it, in batches? Are you hiring a hall? Tell me more :D

110! Lol. I'd recommend taking the 110 to Manchester airport and putting them on the baggage carousel! 1 frame every 2 seconds should do it.

I would really like that

Cool b/g looks better BUT it now shows that the model needs more light.. IMHO

Dave

More light?

I thought she looked correctly exposed? What does everyone else think?

She was exposed to the light meter reading which I agreed with.

It is their annual Christmas party and I have been asked to go and take photos of them as a sort of side show. There have had hairdressers and other such things previously.
