Another Garage studio

Been following your progress with interest over the last few weeks as this is about as close as I'm ever likely to get to a studio!

Looking forward to seeing the latest photos and your finished setup :)

Not really, the studio is a bit small for white backgrounds as good as yours although with some PP I should be able to get some white ones. I really love stuff like the pics I posted in the nudes section really low key stuff. I am looking for ways of creating a pleasing background for normal portraits too. It also gives me space to do product photography leaving it set up so that I can re-create the same effect over several days.

If I am perfectly honest, I much prefer on off white gray backdrop....not easy for me to do though for a few reasons, but in a situation where a bit of PP was possible then I would offer it for all clients.

Well I have been working on the studio all day. The changing room/dark room is virtually finished (and light tight). The last two panels are now cut then its the architrave and a few more bits and pieces. Still need to paint it all etc but with any luck it should be completely finished by next weekend and if not I should get it finished then.

Once thats done its a chance to use it and have a practice....

Well I was hoping that my studio would be finished but after suffering concussion at the weekend it is slightly delayed. Luckily the building work was finished and it was whilst tidying up all my tools etc that I banged my head.

I have only actually got the painting to do, fit the draft excluders and then lay the carpet tiles!!!!

Hopefully I will feel up to it maybe Thursday. If not it will be next week as I collect my new car on Friday so will probably not get much done.

Bizarrely the ENTIRE studio is light tight !! Making the changing room/dark room slightly less useful in it's own right but at least it definitely will be dark :)

Sorry to hear you've got concussion - didn't realise your conversion was so perilous. At least it sounds like you've made real progress.

Look forward to seeing some pictures when you're back on your feet!

Cheers, I think it was worth the hard work! Looking forward to getting in there on Saturday and setting up the lights etc then having a play.

That looks exciting I am sure you will have some good times in there Darren.

Don't even get to use it today as I'm off to a wedding :)

I have a studio

The model didn't have much personality though and she was off her head.

Ha ha ha funny... I like the studio look forward to seeing some results...

Looking good Darren! Now where do I put all the rubbish out of my Garage???

I would of said the width is restrictive. But that's me.

It's the width I have though so I have to make do.

as the tog said to the model......:D

The studio looks great. You have done a top job by the look of the pics.
The whole clan will be fighting to get in there and play.
Think there will bea fair few going green with envy, myself included.

Thanks Tony,

Yes I really like it. I have a couple of aluminium poles due and once these arrive I should be able to use the studio sideways too. Although this will give me the extra width I will only then have nine feet of length so it will not be easy but a nine by sixteen feet studio is still nice!

Looking good Darren, just seen your firsts shots to in your other thread :) What backdrop did you use? I've been thinking of a good quality white bed sheet (perhaps a black one too), but am worried about creases or can they be blown out... I#d be interested to see your set up with your backdrop in place too.

Darren,

I am using a pair of Ikea natural muslin curtains costing £18 because I had two pairs in the attic :)

They are not even quite white and VERY creased. My back has been out since about thursday so I can barely even bend over so not even ironed them, in fact they are two separate curtains clipped together with some clips :)

This was a shot for the film section showing my F80 in place but you can see just how creased the background is. The reality is that I got a white background from that just by blowing the muslin.

I just metered the model/dummy for f8 by adjusting the main light then the background a stop brighter by adjusting the 2 lights on that.

Looking good... I don't have the luxury of an empty garage (mines got a very narrow walkway through all the junk!!), but I do have the Lencarta smartflash lights and a fairly large lounge... time to buy that sheet...!

If you get a couple of the metal cups that you use in wardrobes to hold the clothing pole and attach these to either side of your room about 6 inches from the ceiling they will not get in the way. Then get a piece of wooden dowel exactly the right length (total cost £5) and you have a very cheap backdrop pole which you can add/remove very easily. You could also light it from the back giving you more space.

Very nice looking work space.. Came together nicely...

Thanks, it was a lot of hard work and 3 times over budget :)

BUT I am really rather pleased with it. It really is another room not a garage. I am looking forward to my back getting better and me getting in there and taking some shots.

It's coming on a treat Darren, that octabox looks very familiar :D, just a thought, could you not just paint that back wall and half way down the floor a brilliant Matt white ? you could always get rid of the rib in the middle with photoshop, then you could have a sheet of perspex on the floor to get the white reflective look, then maybe fit a black pull down roller blind at the top of the back wall for when you want to change backgrounds :)

I am getting a hilite box which will go against the back wall and then the back drop pole will sit just in front of it. I am not a big fan of the white background look but will get the kit to do it as some people want it. My favourite look is totally black background with the model popping out of the background as with Cassie on my web site. I have a brilliant white wall directly opposite that wall anyway in order to do stuff like passport photos. I have some white shiny stuff to mess with already so will try that. Just trying to get the rest of the money together for the rest of my studio order which is an Elitepro 300w light giving me 3 lights in total plus a Lencarta ring flash and a long thin softbox for doing full length low key art nudes etc oh and some quality stands and a portable back drop stand for taking out with me. I have just got my first gig with the safari kit 120 pensioners at a big party :)

Great stuff  How have I missed this?? What a numpty I am. Looks like a fab conversion, I sincerely hope that you have loads of fun with it

Yes and it is totally disabled friendly too. I thought we had already spoken about my studio in another thread

Looking forwards to using it but I have been in agony since Thursday with a trapped nerve in my back or something like that. Been to Docs today and left the chemist with a carrier bag full of tablets :help: Hopefully that will sort it.
