Another Garage studio

I knew that you had a studio, but didn't know that you were still building it and that it had a past life as a garage ;)

Sorry to hear about your back. When I hurt my back (muscular mostly) I was told to have hot baths, as hot as I could stand them and good posture....now that's an excuse for long, uniterupted bubble baths and reading books in the bath if ever I heard one ;)

Hope you're fighting fit again soon.

Sorry to hear of your back injury, as Nattelie suggested, hot baths and go for a walk, min should be 2 miles non stop, this will loosen the muscles again. More likely to be muscular problems.. You may need to do that for a few days.... Heat packs from boots will help too...

If not visit a chiropractor, worked wonders for me..

I'm on so many tablets I am rattling! But I feel a little better today. Looking forwards to having a right good play :). If there are any local togs who want an intro to studio photography then give me a shout. I am just a beginner myself but I am happy to share my limited knowledge and let people have a play.

Why is that it's always people miles away that make offers like that?!

Hope you recover soon - back problems are always really frustrating.

Looking forward to meeting up at the Zoo meet, but if I'm ever near Preston, expect a knock at the door!

Chester is not that far you could always pop up for a go in the studio and I'll arrange a model. I find it very useful bouncing ideas off other people too.

Darren, I got your message. I am free tomorrow evening and can bring my lights round

Excellent, I have my Lencarta Safari lights now but it would be interesting to see the difference to yours. I have two Safari lights so wanted either one or two mains lights just to finish off.

What time should i arrive?

half seven/eight. Just sent a message to CGEEZER asking if he wants to join us and bring Vicky along as a model. If not Melissa or Chloe will be around. We can have a mess with the tethered shooting too. I'm after a 19" monitor that I have been offered for £20 which would be ideal as a 2nd screen on the studio Mac specifically as a preview screen for the tethering.

I will bring my new toy, a Panasonic Lumix G2, arrived this morning and it really is very good

Excellent, I know nothing about them. Do they have a full manual mode?

Yes, and you can use other lenses with it using a lens adaptor.

Ian,

We have a model for tomorrow night, all organised

If there is another tog in the Preston are that hasn't done any studio work but fancies it speak now and you could pop along too. Only really space for 3 in total.

2 models now. I had planned some shots in the studio with each model separately and then together. After that both of them outside into the car park for some low key black background shots and IF I get permission and we have time there is a possibility of nipping down to the cemetry for some spooky shots

Still a space for one more tog as CGEEZER can't make it.

Darren, do you still have a slot for this tonight? id be up for it, ive never done studio work before so it would be nice to get some experience.

thanks

Jamie

Yes, just replied. See you at 7pm with Icnoble.

We have Vicky, one of the models from the Haslam Park shoot coming at 8pm so that gives us an hour before hand to go through studio lighting and how to set the camera up plus Melissa will no doubt be about somewhere as a 2nd model :)

Thanks Darren for a great evening. And to everyone who has been following Darren's progress with the studio, I am very impressed with what Darren has achieved.

Thanks for that. Hoping for some more useful evenings of photography.

I'm just copying the folder from the studio computer onto my laptop as we speak. We were photographing Vicky (from the Haslam Park meet) but I was also photographing Melissa before the other two got here. Will post both later.

How is your back Darren? Glad the evening went well, look forward to seeing pics.

It wasn't too bad earlier on in the evening but after rolling around on the floor shooting pictures of Vicky it is starting to hurt again!

Hi Guys,
First post here so HELLO!

As a note to all of this, my study is in my garage. I basically boxed out half of the garage (couldn't do it all 'cos our washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer are in there).

We firstly put up loft boards in the roof area and moved anything we didn't need up there. Once we cleared a space large enough we put a damp-proof membrane over the walls and floor.
Next was the timber frame... all the way round the walls (including a stud partition with a door to get through to the rest of the garage) and a raised false floor. We then used loft insulation on the walls and floor and put up plaster board and a good grade floorboard.
The last bits were the smoothing and painting, laminate flooring and skirting boards.

I now have a study that i use for the business. I used to have to walk outside to get to it but we built a conservatory between the back door and the rear garage door so it feels like it's part of the house now.

My next project is to extend the garage UPWARDS and have a studio above me!

Hope that helps anyone thinking of doing something like this.

A nice shot.
Lighting-wise, there is some flare on her left shoulder from the Hi-Lite.
The light (umbrella?) would have defined the shape of her face better if it had been placed much higher, placing it higher would have required a reflector low down to push some light up. And the light would have been better if it had been a bit to the right, exactly where she was looking.

Editing-wise, I think I would clone out the legs as they aren't symetrical, and also the earing.

But a good effort

Well I cannot argue with a true expert!!

However I really like the photo, given it's one of the first shots through Darren's safari setup it's come out terrific. I'm sure the model will be thrilled with that. My untrained eyes like the legs offset otherwise the shoes would look like a pair of bunny ears. Well done, curiously I was looking through Garry's Photolearn website last night, very good stuff.

Well done guys and it seems like well worth the effort and expense Darren, keep them coming.

Nice pic. Looks like the space you have will serve you well. New kit ec takes awhile to get used to. I agree with Garry on the points made, to me the legs and earing don't sit quite right in the image... A little more direction to the model will sort things like that..

Hope you don't mind i had a very quick play, as i agree with Garry about the earring and feet, which distracts from a nice image, i also hid her ear, the hair needs more work in this edit, but like i said it was very quick just to give you the idea :)

Personally I think that looks much better. All personal opinion of course

Ok, here are half a dozen of mine from last night. I learnt plenty from doing the shots.

Backdrop lights need attaching to the cross member to get the stands out of the way.

Larger flat shiny board on the bottom.

Check the lights/lighting between every change of pose.

The backdrop needs ironing and pulling tight (I knew this before I started!)

Anyway here are some of mine:

Iain,

You actually pointed out when you took that shot that you thought that it looked like her feet were growing out of her head and asked her to lower her feet. Have you not got that shot?
