Brought is NOT the past tense of buy - ever - it never has been :bat:

The word you are looking for is BOUGHT!

It's not a difficult concept to understand, honestly.

Brought is, however, the past tense of bring - now all you youngsters out there please get this into your head (and vocabulary)

and while we're at it

"would of" and "off of" should be replaced with "would have" and "from" (generally speaking) as in

I would have done that if I had got it from him first -

and not

I would of done that if I had got it off of him first.

Is it just me or do others get peeved with this sort of thing

PS - only one e in lens

With you 100% on this one :D

Cant stand it when people say Brought instead of Bought

Ooooo and another one that really annoys me...

Anythink instead of anything!!!

I get INCREDIBLY annoyed with this kind of thing, I'm the ultimate spelling geek - although I do resent being lumped in with "youngsters" that can't spell - I'm better at spelling & grammar than a lot of people I've worked with twice or three times my age!

However, yes... definitely with you on this one - and people who confuse it's and its, and their, there and they're make me ridiculously cross.... *blush*

me and <<insert name>>
instead of
<<insert name>> and me
:gag:

one of the lads at work uses me as a dictionary (despite my spelling being dreadful!)

a few weeks ago (while he was filling in a sickness self assessment form)
him - "how do you spell diarrhoea!?"
me - "just put 'the squits' down, she'll know what you mean"

i dont think he appreciated it and probably spelt it his own way 'diorea;

Spelling and grammer really gets my goat too. I was sent an email from a senior manager while at work the other day and i counted 4 errors in 3 lines of text. It seems that people think that spell check is there as a safety net and not a last resort.

Except all too often it's 'rediculous!':D

What's the point in getting all het up about it though? If at least 10 years in the education system hasn't worked, TPF isn't going to re-invent the wheel. ;)

It doesn't bother me all that much tbh, as long as I can understand what the poster is saying, and the guy/girl making those elementary mistakes probably has other skills I don't anyway.

It's been [brought] up a couple of times already, once by me because I also find it annoying, plenty of thoughts here.

Noone instead of no one is another one:)

Noone always looks to me like an E has been added onto Noon  And annoys me too!

We will just have to get used to it and not let it annoy us because it is never going to improve, in fact it is going to get a lot worse or shall I just say worser:lol:

When someone says Ketsup instead of Ketchup, That annoys me. Oh an Asx instead of Ask.... ugh

i used to really hate it at school when people owed money for school lunches, they used to say that they owned money for lunches and it used to drive me up the wall!

Depends on your hearing and the accent used. I believe what you could be hearing is "would've" which I agree could be misheard by some and then interpreted as would of.

You think that's bad. I've known one of the lads in the kindergarden, sorry, Call Centre (all but 2 of them are under 20) be off work with a 'saw throat'. Bet that was rough!

Just remember though, if you suffer from a condition, it's usually one you are unable to spell!

It also annoys me when people say 'anythink' or 'somethink' It's THING not THINK! :bat:

Lend and borrow.
As in " can you borrow us a £5"

When someone says Ketsup instead of Ketchup, That annoys me.

Two hundred years ago it was "catsup" or "catchup", which were anglicized versions of the Chinese/Malay original, and without a tomato in sight.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for my spelling, i can't spell never have been able to never will be able to. I am not stupid or lazy i just can't spell.

Before spell check this post had 6 spelling mistakes.

lens is the biggest annoyance for me :bang:

Oh it really drives me mad......

Who says "Brought" rather than "Bought"? Those crazy southerners, I don't doubt.

While we're at it:

Bath is spelt BATH not BARTH or BAAHTH.
Grass is spelt GRASS not GRARSE.

Speak English, dangit!!

The next thing heading our way from the USA is "What do we got..." (for dinner etc). And there isn't a single news reporter/reader on southern tv that can pronounce mayor correctly. It seems London has a "mare".

I thought traffic had improved since the congestion charge, or is something else a nightmare.
Pronouncing Mayor as mare is more tan likely down to accent.
I for instance pronounce tomorrow as tomarra, not sure why really.

While typed spelling and grammar mistakes are a tad irritating it is just a sad reflection on our contries education system - and not worth getting het up about.
Although I am glad that I have not seen any threads of late where people are being picked up on their grammar/spelling while asking a completely unrelated question - that really gets my goat!

But you use spellcheck... which lots of people don't bother with!

Lay and laying instead of lie and lying (in a non-sexual sense :naughty: )

A spell checker won't show you the wrong uses of lose/loose, they're/there/their, bought/brought, off/of and a host of other similar common errors.

Here's a new one I've just come across here.......... percific

TBH I don't see what all the fuss is about. But that might be because I am one of the less fortunate ones.

If the only thing you can think to moan about, is someone else's spelling and/or grammar, then I envy you :)

For anyone who is self conscious of their spelling Google Toolbar has exactly what you need. I have even improved my spelling since I first started using it. I used to get at least a couple of mistake per line of text before, but now I get about 1 or 2 in an entire post.

Just thought I'd let you know that:

A) Lens and lens are actually the same as per Merriam-Webster, however lens is just an old way of saying it - not actually incorrect
B)
Spelling and grammer really gets my goat too. I was sent an email from a senior manager while at work the other day and i counted 4 errors in 3 lines of text. It seems that people think that spell check is there as a safety net and not a last resort.

This year i am gonna by another camera, honest

That's 'grammar', 'I', 'I', 'I' and 'buy'.

;)

OK, not written English but my pet hate is pronunciation of certain words. Blue Peter drove me insane as a child with, "Take out your crayrons and do some drawring." The ruddy words are crayon and drawing ffs! That old advert years ago where the pregnant bird wanted a tuna and banana pizza as well, because the twunt voiceover pronounced it tuner and bernanrer.

Oooooh! I need a lie down now, and a rub down with a wet flannel.

I have a cousin down south who says brought instead of bought, she's far from stupid so I think it's more down to the way her peers spoke as a youth.

A few months ago one of my work mates was having a problem finding something on our pc system using the search function and asked should he put an 'asterix' in front of the word. After he said it a few times I shouted "It's aster-ISK you stupid *@$#! Asterix is a French cartoon character". It was remarkably soothing and satisfying being able to do that.
