Here's a funny thing . Went to local market town, Daventry, for food and money. Went to the hole in the wall at Nat West for dosh and as I was stuffing the huge wedge of cash, well, 50 quid, into my wallet I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned round expecting to see a mate or something but it was a 30 - 40 year old bloke who had a £5 note in his hand. In reasonably good English (he was Asian/Far-Eastern) he said that the £5 was on the pavement and that I'd dropped it. I knew I'd got a 20 and a fiver still in my wallet so I thanked him profusely and put it away without checking if the original was there. As I crossed the road I thought it odd 'cos it would've been v difficult to drop that fiver. Never mind I thought, if the original's still there I'll put it in the air-ambulance pot at the pub. Went shopping and forgot about it.
About 15 mins later, I'd done shopping and heading back to the car park I went through a little alley or ginnell, you know one person wide thing. No-one else around, got to end of alley and a tap on my shoulder. Same man, said in broken English that he thought the fiver was his, he'd dropped it and would I check my wallet. I'm starting to get into defence mode now but checked wallet and sure enough, my fiver's there so I gave him his back. He'd got a folded 20 in his hand and said, "Please , you have £10 notes, please give me 2 for this £20". I'm deffo in defence mode now, "No mate" says I " I just got these from the bank, I don't know where your 20 came from". Left it at that.
The more I thought about it the more I thought there must be a scam here, so I phoned the local old bill and told them the story. "It might be totally innocent" I said.
"No ",said the nice lady copper "It sounds very dodgey".
Asked if I was OK, "'cos it can't have been very nice having been stalked for 15 mins!"
I said I hadn't thought of that....now you mention it, not very nice.
Anyway she gave me a ref number and said they'd keep an eye out.
So what do you think? Scam of some sort, phoney £20 notes or innocent?
My thinking, fake 20's, give £5 to prove honesty etc.....
