A funny thing happened......or a warning?

If its a hoax, he's risking not getting his £5 back each time isn't he which seems odd.
Unless its the £5 which is fake and he's going on a slight chance of getting a real £5 given back instead of the one he gave out, in which case makes the effort he's gone to even more not probable. Very weird system.

I don't think anyone bothers with counterfeit fivers. The whole thing's weird! Perhaps he was on the level or a very poor scammer. It's a lot of time to waste just to turn round £20 as others have pointed out and he didn't look or act like a mugger.

You'd be surprised the even counterfeit coins

So you happily took the fiver without checking if it was your own, and are doubting the sincerity of the other guy?

My first thought too :D

Very common down here, that scam. The most popular place to carry it out is supermarkets, where you are putting the trolley back and someone offers you a £1 coin to take the trolley from you. They look real, and you don't think anything of it - until you examine it closely.

It looks to me like a planned mugging that was abandoned for some reason.
Muggers frequently strike up some kind of conversation, presumably so that they can assess their chances of success.

Happened to me a couple of years ago, walking (apparently) alone in the park late at night... 2 teenage boys asked me for a light. I didn't answer, instead I just called my GSD, he was off out of sight watering the grass and came back at full speed. They then decided to give up smoking and were off:)

Yep its known as "interviewing your suitability as a victim" can we intimidate this guy? , does he seem scared ? , does he make eye contact ? is he likely to fight back ? etc

I would concur that thats what is going on here, and would guess that the op "failed" the interview - ie they decided he wasnt likely to be a cooperative and easy victim

there is a good write up about this 'interview' process on nononsenseselfdefence.com for those who are interested (though i would note that NNSD is american, and frequently advocates striking first if you think you are being 'interviewed' and can't take evasive action... I wouldnt go that far personally - because although they are doubtless right that you can prempt a mugging by shattering his collar bone and dislocating his knee, i doubt the police would view someone offering you a fiver as reasonable grounds for a premptive attack  )

Yes, having been on the chit-chat section of a US forum (which seemed to be almost entirely populated by hard line, gun toting Republicans) I think they adopt a very hard line with anyone who may be a threat. basically, "Shoot first and let God sort it out!"
Dav's not the most friendly place sometimes but don't think there's many day-time muggings.

We had something like this last year, but when they realised Darrell wasn't to be messed with and then saw me in the drivers seat they decided it was not the best idea

Ah lovely Dav, we used to have two residency contracts there over 2 years...we had more detailings with police than any other place we've worked   twice being when little scrotes tried to break into my car :bat:

Though the funniest one had to be at the end of the night as we were loading the car Darrell dislocated his shoulder and on the floor in agony just as a police car was going passed...cue screaming tyres and the police out the car trying to arrest me for assault

I wonder is the lovely PC Cook is still beating her streets there :D

In Dav you were lucky they hadn't stripped it to the sub frame

Should've just nutted him and been off with the twenty too?
