Its the Irish version, I pull the "Stick" back to go forward and push it forward to go backIt’s sounds like you are driving a DAF Variomatic!

My car only has 2 one for forward and the other for backwards I feel cheated![]()
I'm not sure I'd like that tbh.At least mine has a dial rather than a stick
Nudge stick left or right for down one or up one, which is also a bit of a pita as I rest my hand on in, and its only a slight movement.and flappy paddles for play time.
You couldn't cope with more, you'd be a menace on the road![]()

That's how I discovered it'd shift down at a highly illegal speed btw![]()
Thats what bridges are for? right?and that usually only gets used under bridges (with a hefty dose of right foot!)
No you've got it wrong. The engine labours at 28mph in 5th and 38th mph in 6th which is my point. Both tests were done on a country road with no traffic to inconvenience. Cruise control was switched on to keep speed constant on each run.So if I've got this right you compered apples with oranges, why not 28mph and 30mph in both fourth and fifth and similarly for 38mph and 40mph in both fifth and sixth to see what the respective mpg is, also did you conduct these tests in town or on the open roads out with built up areas, as I would be interested in knowing where. If in town can you tell me which one because I have yet to find any town that I could drive round at a constant speed in order to conduct an accurate test as described. If on the open road then surely driving at these sort of speeds you would have been driving in a way as to inconvenience other road users. If however these tests were conducted on a test track then they would have been as useful as manufacturers advertised mpg in real world driving situations.![]()
Unless the engines map has been poorly calibrated, there is no reason why an ecu will be struggling with fuel mix. unless the car is running at wide open throttle the cat temp remains fairly stable regardless of whether you are in 5th or 6th. At 38mph the road has to be flat or on a decline for my engine not to start labouring, at 40 it can take inclines with ease so long as they are not too steep, plus the car pulls with ease should I accelerate and I don't have to drop to 5th to do so.The issue with emissions isn't about how much MPG your car can get but how clean the fuel burn is. If I drove around town doing 38 in 6th (petrol) my on board MPG reader will probably tell me I'm doing awesome in the intervals it reads but in reality the ECU will be struggling with the fuel mix, the cat will be dropping in temp and what comes out the back will be more harmful than if I was doing it in 5th. It's another reason why Diesel is bad for city driving because their filters clog up if they don't do enough warm mileage driving and they have to do a regen cycle (throw extra fuel through the system) to burn it out.
I don't mind if someone is doing 2-3mph slower than the limit, afterall it is a limit not a target. But if you're doing 42 in a 60 which seems to be very common (especially when the HGV speed limit is now 50 so really there's no excuse) then that is something that needs to be looked into.
Once got pulled for doing 60 in a 60, apparently just because my car is capable of it doesn't mean I should do it (nice twisty roads!)
But how much leeway do you expect? Whilst it's only 2mph over the guideline, it's still 6mph over the actual limit.46 in a 40 is harsh. What's that? 2mph over the guidelines for stopping someone?
The problem is varying air pressure in tyres and depth of tyre tread can alter the cars speed. So really a zero tolerance shouldn't really be permissible. It should be as close to zero tolerance as the equipment calibration so 42 in a 40 if it can be done. Only when people have to really have to pay attention will we end make inroads into stupid speed on roads.

I didn't say that at all. What I said was at 28mph in 4th gear, a car will be using more fuel and producing higher emissions than it would at 30mph when you can drive in 5th without the engine labouring. The same goes for 38mph in 5th gear and 40mph in 6th gear.you said to me that 2mph under the limit was a lot but 2 mile an hour above is to tight?
whats it going to be?

I don't make anything up, you however seem to make everything up, including claiming people have said/written something when they haven't.you just make this up, you should apply for the dogs job in blue peter.

I know exactly where he works for ford and he is an admitted petrol head I think is the word. I also see his attitude to speed is related to that by his posts.IIRC, you should probably ask @nilagin where he does actually work, if my memory is correct he probably has more knowledge on this subject than you (or most of the contributors on this thread, and I include myself in that).
Oh pray tell. What is my attitude to speed?I know exactly where he works for ford and he is an admitted petrol head I think is the word. I also see his attitude to speed is related to that by his posts.

I fear his only qualification is in making things up. Tell a lie he may have another. He likes to dig deep holes. Reading and comprehension certainly doesn't seem to be a strong point. So in the interest of balance, maybe you could confirm your qualifications and experience in the field? (As you say he is making things up you must be qualified in some way to come to that conclusion).
Even shorter with bumps emissions.Dear Lord are you girls still arguing! Kiss and make up fgs, life is too short! [emoji44]
